1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.

She moved in for two weeks, lasted five days, left a mess, and then pressed her ear against their bedroom door and burst in screaming.

Chapter 2: How do people get caught cheating?
Oh, yeah. Those are all over the news all the time. And his news station loves him because he's like, oh, maybe we'll finally go viral. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, no, y'all are totally right. Like some people doing something stupid with glitter bombs at a party. Yeah, yeah. Anyway, I have to make some calls and confirm it.
And at one point, I'm talking to this lady, and she says that she was at the party, and she gives me the names of the people. Okay. And one of the names was the same as my boyfriend. So I asked if they could send me a picture. Uh-oh. Sure enough. Uh-oh. It was a picture of him covered with pink glitter dust. No. It was his reveal, or he was just there? Wait, you mean, oh, he's having a girl.
Oh, God. Dude. Yeah, he'd been cheating on me for two years, and this is how I found out? Years. Oh, man, how do people do that? That is enough time to have a couple kids, in fact. Did you get him something off the registry or no? Oh, my God, no. Oh, my God. Wait, did the baby mama find out? Did you tell her? I called my boyfriend. I was like, are you kidding me?
And I don't know how he handled it from there. But I was just like, it's one of my favorite party stories. Okay. I bet it leaves people speechless. Yeah, definitely us. Let's keep going to Patrick. Tell us how you busted your significant other. Well, every time I went to my girlfriend's apartment, I always noticed the doorman downstairs would sort of stand there. Ooh, you got a fancy apartment.
I like it. Yeah. Well, yeah, but he never got the door for me, which is what I thought was weird. Oh, so you didn't ever tip him. What the heck? I mean, maybe he was just more security than anything. Or eye candy. I don't know. Well, you might be onto something there. Uh-oh. Because I'm thinking, like, your job is to open the door. Yeah, it's your one thing.
I would just, like, joke about it to my girlfriend, right? Uh-huh. And then one day I come over and he's not there at all. Wow. How dare he take a bathroom break? You have to enter. How do you know what to do?

Chapter 3: What stories do listeners share about catching their partners cheating?
But nothing changed. You still have to open the door. You're like, do I push? Do I pull? There's no man here to help me. I actually was thinking he got fired. Oh. Okay. That would make sense. So I go up to my girlfriend's place, and I'm, you know, knocking on her door, and who answers it but the doorman. Oh. Maybe he's doing personal calls now. Hey, he opened the door for you. Look at that.
Oh, my God. Shirtless.
Oh, wow.
So I'm guessing that your girlfriend was also there. She was, and turns out they'd been secretly hooking up for months. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I broke up with her on the spot, and as I was leaving... I finally said to the doorman, hey, at least you opened the door for me this time, finally. Way to get him. I bet he cried. That hit hard. Burn lives with him to this day. All right.
Finally, we got time for one more. Let's talk to Lydia. Tell us how you busted your significant other. Yeah. So back in college a few years ago. My boyfriend at the time played guitar. And he always had this really, really sweet song that he wrote. And it was for me. And he'd sing it to me. And it was just so sweet. And I loved it. And always asked him to perform it for me.
That's cute.
It was so cute. One day, as a cute little six-month anniversary gift, I thought I'd frame his handwritten lyrics for it and give that to him. Oh, okay. That's a cute gift. Right. So I go into his guitar case to find it. And inside, I find a whole bunch of papers, all with the same lyrics. Same song lyrics, but different women's names. No.
Maybe it's just for shows so we can play to the crowd, you know? It doesn't make sense. There's Emma, there's Naomi, there's Whitney. Like, there's all of these different women's names. Dude, he can't just look at the women and know their names. He has to write it down. The lyrics don't.
change oh no that's it they didn't change they was all the same lyrics oh god so for our anniversary still did the gift i framed them all for him and hung it up in his apartment oh i bet he loved that he's like oh hey 10 copies i bet he didn't have much to say what was his reaction no Totally speechless. Totally busted.

Chapter 4: What unusual methods have been used to expose infidelity?
But a good experience to write a song about. Oh, yeah. This one's called I Got Caught. Well, I'm glad you unsubscribed from that relationship, Lydia. You got out good. Is that what you call it, Jeff? Yeah. I like it. I think it works. Make sure you hit up our text board, 78592. If you have a funny story about how you caught your ex cheating, you could be on the next edition of Busted.
