“When the student is ready the teacher will appear”–Tao Te Ching When we put it all together it might seem like the stages flow easily from one to the next with each Archetype showing up in perfect order. Thinking of the hero moving through the three stages of preparation, journey and return while being aided by twelve in order is useful as a teaching tool, the reality in most cases is that growth really doesn’t happen in such a defined, linear way. Our guides (each Archetype) come to us when they (and at some level) when we choose. The pattern of the journey ends up being more like a spiral instead of a linear map. The final stage of the journey, characterized by the Archetype of the Fool ends up connecting with the first Archetype, the Innocent, but at a higher level than before. This time the Innocent is wiser about life. On the spiraling hero’s journey, we may encounter each Archetype many times, and in the process gain new gifts at a higher or deeper level of development. Each encounter creates a new neural pathway in the brain and this allows us to transform while making the journey meaningful. When we experience reality, we create a net to hold that reality and can take the experience and make meaning of it. The Archetypes we have not yet encountered are like holes in a net. The experiences that we have little or no way of understanding simply pass through the holes.
