I met Steven in Pine Lodge, an addiction treatment centre, in 2016. I instantly liked him. In fact everyone liked him. He behaved and even looked like members of my own family. When I arrived to Pine Lodge I was riddled with anxiety but Steven's feeling of familiarity he gave me, his humour and laugh help put me at ease. Everyone wanted to sit at his table at mealtime. When he left treatment two weeks into my 28 days, I like to think I filled that vacant position he left behind! Before meeting Steven, however, his life was filled with substance abuse, violence and personal neglect that left him homeless and fighting to stay alive. Today he is an addictions counsellor, working on a masters of social work and an author.
