How did SummerSlam Night 2 open and set the tone in Minneapolis?

Robin Lundberg 0:00
Robin Lundberg here on the Busted Open After Dark podcast. Myself and Dave LaGreca take you through the major moments of SummerSlam, including Roman Reigns ending the shield over Seth Rollins.
Busted Open show ident / Intro 0:10
This is the Busted Open podcast.
Robin Lundberg 0:14
Dave LaGreca, of course, host of Busted Open, founder here of SiriusXM WWE Radio. Dave, we'll get your reaction to the rest of the show, but since I just did the whole spiel about that hot take, what do you think of my premise of Roman Reigns as the best big match wrestler of all time?
Dave LaGreca 0:29
It's a bold statement. It's a hot take. I will say this. To me, he's the biggest big game, big match performer in the last 25 years in pro wrestling. Of all time, I don't know if I can go that deep, but I'll definitely say the last 25 years, which is saying something when you look at all the stars that we've seen step into that ring the last two and a half decades.
Robin Lundberg 0:54
But yeah, 25 years is a pretty good chunk of time, right?
Dave LaGreca 0:59
And listen, that's throwing out there John Cena. That's throwing out there some of the greats that we've seen the last two and a half decades. But to your point, what Roman's been able to do, how Roman shows up. And Robin, this is a match tonight that I think is going to be talked about for decades. This is top to bottom when you look at last night and tonight, one of the best Summer Slams in recent memory.
Robin Lundberg 1:26
The storytelling of it, right, Dave? I mean, we talked about this last night and the end of WrestleMania 40 with Cody Rhodes finishing his story. But it was there then. I mean, really, you're building from then to now. You're building from the end of the shield to now.

Why do hosts call Roman Reigns the best big‑match performer of the last 25 years?

Robin Lundberg 1:41
But the way that that match ended and the way that this sort of, you know, came to a conclusion with Roman deciding to drop that chair down and then those two, you know, bumping fists in the ring. That was, you know, as I said, absolute cinema.
Dave LaGreca 1:56
Yeah, it's storytelling at its best. And like you said, they went through all the chapters, right? The shield, the breakup of the shield, what we saw at WrestleMania 40 with Roman and Cody and what we've seen over the last six months play out with these two alone. It was perfect cinema. It was a great story. And the way that that ended and the way that that finished... Man, we're going to have to see what's going on with Seth and what's going on with Roman because the next chapter continues for both those guys come tomorrow night on Monday Night Raw.
Robin Lundberg 2:29
Yeah. And let's get to Monday Night Raw in a second. But when I opened that the show, I was talking about how important it is, obviously, in the wrestling business, not that this is some sort of revelation, but how you close the show and how you start the show. And to me, that's where night two really hit all the right notes. You know, obviously, we were just discussing the classic between Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. But when you kick it off and you've got Nick Aldis. Coming out there fresh off of last night and hit you with that little bit of a bait and switch where it's like, here's Gunther in the main event. I'm interjecting him. And that's enough to piss Sami Zayn off, obviously. But then the cherry on top, the return of Kevin Owens, who winds up winning that match to set up what we now know is next for CM Punk.
Dave LaGreca 3:13
It's crazy. I took a lot of calls on the pre-show before we started night two of SummerSlam. And pretty much everybody was saying there's no way you can match what we saw last night in night number one. And I think night number two was better than night number one. And like you just said, the way that it ended and the way that it started. Last night starts with EO Sky and Liv Morgan, and then we get this number one contenders match to start off tonight. We get the big return of Kevin Owens. This crowd was hyped throughout. And the crowd is a big part of what we saw for both nights. But to your point, you've got to finish strong and you've got to start strong, and I think they did that tonight.
Robin Lundberg 3:53
The stuff in between, was there anything that stood out to you the most? You got Dan Housen getting the human monies.
