What is the premise of the Stranger Things‑themed Monday Night RAW?
Welcome to Bust It Open After Dark. I'm your host, Tommy Dreamer, talking the Stranger Things episode of Monday Night Raw live from Brooklyn. We have a world title match with CM Punk and Braun Breaker and a new women's intercontinental champion, the man, Becky Lynch. And I'm gonna talk about it right now. This is the Busted Open Podcast. A lot of moving parts of tonight's show. Um and and I thought it was excellent. The stranger theme. Stranger Things theme I thought was good. It's really, really hard to Combine themes with uh wrestling programs at times. The beauty of pro wrestling, anything can happen, right? I remember AEW did Shark Week. I thought they did an excellent job, you know, combining stuff like that.
You normally have themed matches, the overall show, uh, with the stage setting, uh, even the opening, turning it upside down. Again, if you're a fan of Stranger Things and how could you Do not be. But all the buzz, man. Stranger Things really has captured the buzz of last week, you know, how they spaced it out. brilliant of like how you're gonna watch the episodes. Uh people went to movie theaters. It was an amazing thing and, you know, water cooler conversation and a lot of people still talking about it. And and kudos to WWE as well as Netflix for getting on perhaps the hottest topic that you could possibly talk about uh with a brand outside of what right now the NFL playoffs and some uh college bowl games, but that's all fake.
We don't care about that. We care about professional wrestling. Um so cool that they jumped on that. Like I said, the entrance, Michael Cole, uh, Corey Graves doing Excellent job.
How did WWE integrate the Stranger Things vibe into the show’s production and storytelling?
You know, obviously I think Corey Graves is watches the show. Don't know about Michael Cole. Um, but I thought they did a great job setting the table for everything. Uh I was the only one who popped for the Phoebe Cates reference because I just watched that was my New Year's Eve, ladies and gentlemen. I watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High because it was on Netflix and it was leaving. That's what I did New Year's Eve. Still uh a lot of controversy with that movie. That's a whole other conversation. Um Um But the big build for the entire you know, weeks leading up CM Punk defending the world title against um Braun Breaker. It had a lot of people talking. Are they going to switch the title? What are they going to do?
Obviously, you know, still a lot of Chris Jericho talk, a lot of hype and hoopla for this show going in. And it represented very, very well the main event on a show like this, where we saw a lot and a lot of good. Really, really solid, solid, almost three segment main event between CM Punk and Braunbreaker. And if you you take a lot of pieces out of the equation in the sense of Bottom line, Braun Breaker, that match that he had tonight really did set the stage for him for bigger and better. Um And when I say that, it is the classic case of the veteran and the next guy. There was parts where it reminded me of like when even though he wasn't I don't know his age, but like Ric Flair Sting. Rick Flair Sting at the Clash of Champions literally put Sting on the map and his career was made.
Braun Breakers already had some major moments, but that was a great main event where I always, and you hear us say, and even though this goes back to the William Regal discussion of saving those moments. Uh I, for one, was always afraid every time Braun Breaker. Breaker jumped off the apron, straight box jump from the apron, kind of a flying clothesline through the announced desk. Not because he doesn't execute it safely, because he does, but there's so much room for error. Tonight. is that big moment where, hey, if I'm gonna risk it, I'm gonna go to the top and I'm gonna do that very same move, crash through a table. Um, it it's it's, you know, risk reward. It's a big ass match. It it's for the world title.
It's a moment. But other he had so many great moments in that and so did CM Punk. In the in the beginning, literally like it was all Braun Breaker. And he's dominating him and you know, CM Punk
