Welcome to the Busted Open Podcast. Along with Justin LaBar, I'm Jonathan Hood. And on today's show, we discuss the dynamic between Cody Rhodes and CM Punk as they get ready to face each other at SummerSlam. Right here on the Busted Open Podcast.

How are Cody Rhodes and CM Punk being positioned ahead of their SummerSlam match?

Jonathan Hood 0:17
So on the surface, we have babyface versus babyface. Now there's obviously a little edge for both of them. Cody is probably a little bit more than Punk. Maybe a little bit. Where was Cody's jacket, by the way, on SmackDown? That looked like a heel to me.
Justin LaBar 0:32
Well, you know, so they're both babyfaces right now. But I do think that if one is to take a little bit of a turn, it should be Cody. Number one. Not in Chicago, not in Oklahoma City, and I don't foresee it in New York City, and I don't foresee it in Minneapolis. There is no appetite right now for the audience to boo CM Punk. They are all for CM Punk. no matter how many wrestlers shoot or work, want to complain about, oh, this guy went away, oh, this guy left and abandoned the ship, oh, this guy went and said this and that about the company. Fans have forgotten and forgiven for that. They have no interest in booing CM Punk at this time. Cody Rhodes? He's got a reason to have some edge on him, and I'll tell you what.
Justin LaBar 1:25
What was noticeable to me was the lack of when CM Punk is in the ring on Friday, and he's naming all the different names who can line up and challenge him, and then Cody's music hits. You hear that, dun-dun, wrestling has. When that dun-dun hit, that normally spurs a huge pop. Go back and watch, and most importantly, turn the volume up and listen. It did not spur a huge pop from that crowd. I don't know if it's they were just hanging so much on what Punk was saying that they didn't want Punk to be interrupted. I don't know if it's all the names that Punk was rattling off. They were hoping to see one of those names come out. I don't know what it was, but Cody coming out, I mean, yeah, they all do the whoa.
Justin LaBar 2:08
They all were with him for the fan engagement stuff, but the initial... They didn't get the reaction that Cody normally does. And that really caught my attention. And so I'm just, you know, I think surely we know they're going to be tag team partners at Saturday night's main event against Gunther and Sammy. You've seen this playbook a thousand times. Of course, Punk and Cody are going to, somebody's going to hit somebody with an errant shot.

Could Cody Rhodes realistically turn heel against CM Punk before SummerSlam?

Justin LaBar 2:33
I mean, they're going to have trouble coexisting. We know this. Yes. Do they go into, like, do they go into this? Is this SummerSlam? Two friendlies like Bret Hart and Davey Boy? Is that what we're getting for SummerSlam? Or does one, and the one would be Cody in my opinion, need to get a little dirty all in the name of winning back what he thinks is his in that world title?
Jonathan Hood 3:01
No, Davey Boy and Brett is all in. That's the main event of all in.
Justin LaBar 3:05
There you go. Omega and Osprey. There you go. That's what they're trying to reprise there. I think you're right. That's what that is. I was using Brett and Davey as a scenario because they were the main event at SummerSlam once upon a time, but you're exactly right. That took place at Wembley, and that's actually more appropriate for that.
Jonathan Hood 3:23
That's what they're trying to do. Touche, partner. That's what Tony Khan's trying to do over there. That's what he's trying to get that moment rekindled. So, yes, we can see it a mile away. Actually, even closer than a mile away. Can these two coexist? Even though they're friends. And CM Punk says that, you know, you're my friend. So there's going to be something to the eye of CM Punk. Cody Rhodes will mistakenly hit him. Someone will duck and someone's going to get punched. The thing is, though, is that... If Cody doesn't have to necessarily quote-unquote turn heel, the audience will just be against him because it's against CM Punk. It's not saying that Cody isn't popular. Of course he is. But between those two and Punk's the champion and he's the feel-good guy and he's, hey, isn't it good to be alive in Blank City or what?
Jonathan Hood 4:16
He gets the pops, right? And with Cody... There are some online that have Cody fatigue.
