So not only do I find it painful, I'll I'll tell you this part of it. I did the audible version, you know, the audio book. Yeah. And when I got to that chapter and I was reading it with the production person, I started to sweat. I started to break out with a forehead sweat. I looked over at him, I said, I think I'm having PTSD. You gotta give me a second here. I'm I'm going downstairs to get a cup of coffee and a glass of water. I'll be right back. Because to read it is And to relive it was quite painful. But I think it's important for people. I think The reason I wrote the book, uh, again, if it was a book about my mistakes, Claire, it would have been a phone book. You know, it would have been a thousand pages.
This is this is more about uh what goes on. And I tried to be very honest about mistakes that I made, analytical mistakes. You know, I didn't understand the World Trades Organization protests up in Seattle. There were a lot of other things that I missed. I would have supported the Iraqi war back in the day. I thought they had weapons of mass destruction, at least that's what we were being told. And and we make mistakes, and whether they're mistakes that I've made professionally or personally. or things that have been made at the governmental level.

My my book is really not about a А partisan polemic, it's not about a divide necessarily. It's more about well intended people expecting certain outcomes, they make decisions and they get very different outcomes. Mm-hmm. And these outcomes have gone on to hurt the country. They've they've really created this anger based populist movement. in our country and perhaps other Western democracies, but really this book is more focused on the United States.
Well, I think that theory is very relevant uh in other parts of the world and we might talk about how it might apply here in just a minute. But going back to the aftermath of the eleven days, I was just intrigued to look at your decision making process around that because you were advised to run and hide, Anthony. Don't be seen around here for as long as you possibly can. And then and you said, No, I'm not going to do that. I'm going to go on the talk shows. I'm going to to own this. What was your Thought process behind doing that.
Well, I mean, you're referring to the legendary Howard Bragman who was my crisis PR person. I loved Howard by the way, and unfortunately he died a few years ago. But Howard was a great guy and he told me that I I wasn't gonna make it back from this. He said it was too overwhelming. He told me to go buy a villa in Tuscany and come back to the US in two thousand twenty two. And I I laughed. I said, Howard, I I hired you for your Rolodex, not necessarily for your advice. Give me Stephen Colbert's number and some of the other late night comedians and I went and faced the music, you know. Howard also said something was probably true. He said, Hey Those guys have thirty excuse me, those guys have thirty comedy
writers apiece. You have no comedy writers. They're gonna eviscerate you on those shows. But I thought it was important to face the music. Remember, I was trying to repair my marriage. I was also trying to repair my business.
