So do we know what we're expecting from Donald Trump today?
Well look, it's always a bit of a uh a a luck at the draw, isn't it? I mean, this time last year people were wondering would he be uh pulling out of the UN and then totally withdrawing the US from it.
How might Trump address the Brazilian president and upcoming elections?
He didn't do that, but he used his speech to basically go full scorched earth on the organization and has been withholding billions of dollars in funding ever since, which has put the organization on strain. So we are expecting from him that he will uh well for first have a pop at the Brazilian president who's speaking just before him, uh President Lula, who is going to warn Donald Trump to stay out of the elections in Brazil that are coming up later in this in the year, where Jer Brassonaro's son is running, uh, and there's always tradition that the Brazilians speak first and America comes next. So that'll probably be your first point of contention. And then last year he talked about all the wars that he had ended.
I think he had seven of them at the time, but of course we are looking across the world and and you're not stuck for wars that are still raging, including some of the ones he claims to have ended this time last year. So we will no doubt hear about Gaza, we will no doubt hear about Ukraine as well and the other places that he's been involved. And it tends to be the case that Donald Trump uses this as sort of a how here how here's how great I am and how terrible the UN uh is speech and um probably expecting more of the same today.
Yeah, and it'll be interesting as well to see how this meeting that he's due to have with the new British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, is going to go. It is the first time that they will have sat down together, and I know there's a huge focus on Andy Burnham from the British media to see how he's going to do in in that set piece.
Yeah, there's a look, there's a few different big set pieces that we're definitely watching.
Which global conflicts (Gaza, Ukraine, etc.) will Trump likely mention?
Definitely on that one, not least because of his United Ireland comments, obviously, uh that were made last weekend when he was in uh Ireland. How does Andy Burnham sort of navigate that? Does he bring it up? Does he try to ignore it? But also just how do you you handle it? And and people have been referring to two people in particular as Trump whisperers, Miho Martin and Zoran Mantani, Mihal, for how he handled um uh everything and got the Tariffs cut along with Shane Lowry, who's been getting an awful lot of credit in Irish political circles over here. But also Zoran Mandani, the New York mayor, met with Donald Trump yesterday, and even though they couldn't be more opposed politically, they seem to have this sort of buddy-buddy relationship going on and all Martin's attitude to meet Zoran Mandani here uh tomorrow as well.
But can Andy Burnham replicate that? Keir Starmer seemed to have it for a while with him and get away with it being subservient but pushing back. And a lot of the analysis here actually on the US channels is where we might say, Oh, don't step on his toes, let him say what he has and you know, come in a little bit, be that um more subservient to Donald Trump, don't upset him. They were kind of saying the opposite, that actually he respects the people who stand up to him.
