Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
The Clare Byrne Show on Newstalk. With Aviva Insurance.
Clare Sweeney is here now, actress, singer, soap royalty. You're so welcome. Lovely to have you here. Nice to see you, Clare. Thank you for having me. So you're here to tell us about this new development in your career, which is pretty massive, really, isn't it for you?
Well, I love the musical Annie.
Chapter 2: Who is Claire Sweeney and what is her background?
I've always wanted to play Hannigan and I'm going to get to play the part. I can't wait. Very, very excited.
You've changed everything in your life to do this part when it came along for you.
Well, that's the nature of our business, isn't it? We change jobs. So, yeah, it's a fantastic show. It's a production that's been out for... Many years, but they always reinvent it with a different Hannigan and different cast members. So it's nice to be part of the new version of it. So you'll be coming to the Borthgosh Theatre in August. Yes, I'm very, I love Dublin.
I am so excited to spend, because I've always come over on flying visits. So to get to spend a full week here and anyone in the theatre world who comes to Dublin talks about the dressing rooms at the Board Gosh.
Chapter 3: What exciting new role is Claire Sweeney taking on in Annie?
Really?
How nice they are.
They're infamous. Apparently they're fabulous. Apparently they are like apartments. And that makes a change, doesn't it? Yes, I'm really looking forward to it. And, you know, I always think, you know, Dublin is very... It's a very similar vibe to Liverpool. Everyone's friendly. Well, we've very strong connections, don't we? Yeah, very strong.
And everyone's warm so much so I'm going to bring my mother over with me when I come for the week. Good for you.
Yeah. Good for you. And I hope you have a great week of weather as well when you come over. Fingers crossed, but you'll be used to a bit of rain in Liverpool. I don't mind, yeah. Tell me about the connections between Ireland and the soaps. Because in Ireland, I mean, Brookside was huge here.
I used to come here a lot, you know, when we used to come over and we used to do a thing called script to screen. And we'd come to Dublin and do it. And we'd be teaching young ones how to act for cameras and give them the scripts. And we all used to fight to do that. Like we'd want to come to Ireland and do it. We loved it. And Brookside was massive here, wasn't it, in the day?
Absolutely massive. And I remember as a child being addicted to it, you know, watching it. It would come in like this on the screen because the channels weren't very good. You had to tune them in every time.

Chapter 4: How does Claire feel about performing in Dublin?
But dare you miss an episode of Brookside. It was Saturday Omnibus, wasn't it?
Incredible. And I remember in the 90s coming over and doing a PA in a nightclub with Jason Donovan. When Jason was at the height of his fame, Brookie was massive and we came over and went to a nightclub. It was marvellous.
I was just watching him last night on the Kylie documentary on Netflix. Did you see it? It's so good, isn't it? It's great. It's fascinating. And I'm so sad about the Michael Hutchence and how important he was to her.
And she's quite never got a... No. It looks like Jason's never got over her and she's never got over Michael. And isn't it wonderful? The brother got all that footage, apparently.
That's right. Over the years. We interviewed Michael Hart, who, of course, is Irish. He was the director. And he said there was years and years of footage that Kylie's brother had in the tank. Gold? Did Jason... I didn't expect to go on to this tangent with you, but when I was watching it last night, I was asking myself, did he never get over Kylie or did he never get over Kylie's success?
But also, Kylie running off with his idol.
Oh, I know. There was that as well. I mean, Jason's had a very, well, we're two sitting here just debating, hot debating Kylie and Jason, especially for you. I mean, he's had a very, very successful career in theatre. Of course, yes. He's done so well. It's just different, isn't it? Yeah. But, yeah. Anyway, we've got to answer that. I bet he's done the board, gosh, hasn't he? He has.
He certainly has.
Technicolor dream coach. And enjoyed the dressing rooms. Yeah.

Chapter 5: What connections exist between Ireland and British soaps?
And my dad said, I can do that. I can sort that out for her. And she said, really? Should you get him a butcher? Not quite knowing the link, what my dad proceeded to do was bribe all the concert secretaries of the social clubs with a leg of lamb to let me sing. Wasn't he a clever man? He was. Christmas, I was very busy. Meat hampers going into the clubs.
And I was getting loads of bookings everywhere.
So it worked then?
It worked, yeah.
It worked. And I know from speaking to other people who work in this area, those clubs, that's where you earn your stripes, right?
My goodness. If you can learn to negotiate and handle an audience. Do you remember the programme Phoenix Nights? Yes. They were all like that. You were on before the bingo, after the butties. And it was a baptism of fire, but it was wonderful. You learnt how to handle an audience. You learnt, you know, we call it your dying, you know, when your show's not going down very well.
how to bring it back, how to win the audience round. And it was just a great grounding. But I just remember going back to my house of a night and I knew I had school next week and I'd open my dress case and it'd stink of cigarettes because everyone smoked in the clubs. You'd see like, you know, a layer of smoke over the audience. And I kind of remember that.
I thought you were going to say that the smell of the leg of lamb, but... The legal love, I know. The cigarettes. So then when you went on to act in the soaps, as you have for so many years, did you always have that I need to be singing thing going on? Need to be doing musical theatre?
Oh, I love theatre. I mean, before I get, I'm going to New York on Wednesday, two days. And I'm there for two days. I'm going to see three shows. And that to me is the perfect holiday. It's a busman's holiday. I love going to theatre. And it is my favourite thing to do.

Chapter 6: How did Claire Sweeney's father influence her career?
It was brilliant. Incredible. And as reality shows evolved, those opportunities never came as such because people got used to it. And then people became stars from reality shows as well.
Yeah.
The whole, it changed the face of television, really. It did. Would you do one again? Yeah, I've never done The Jungle. I'd love to do that.
Would you?
Yeah, I did the very first Strictly as well.
Yeah, gosh. You were right in on the ground floor of these things. But like, The Jungle is different, though. I mean, there are elements to that now that I really have to think about, like eating the...
Yeah, I mean, I think twice about eating an eyeball or any type of balls, you know, I think twice about it. But all my friends who've done it have loved it. Carol Vorderman, Cy Gregson, all the people at work in Corrie just absolutely loved it.
So you'd be up for that if the opportunity came. But your work life's going to change a lot now, isn't it? Because you're away from the daily grind of Corrie and into this new thing. I start in a couple of weeks, yeah. Yeah. So, I mean, I know that the hours are really long, aren't they, when you're doing soaps. So will this be different?
It's very different. You know, you've got all day free. Corrie, it's your day, you know, you're working during the day with, you know, with Annie, the normal schedule, unless it's a two show day, which we do have here. I think we've got Thursdays and Saturdays, two show days.
