Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
The Clare Byrne Show on Newstalk. With Aviva Insurance. Now, let's find out what has been trending online this week. Dee Reddy is here, podcaster and entertainment journalist. Hello, Dee. Good morning. Everybody loves the Cranberries again.
Everybody loves the Cranberries again. And the song that's kind of having a massive resurgence for them this time is the very appropriately titled Linger. So written first in 1993.
Chapter 2: What song from The Cranberries is trending online and why?
I think it was after Dolores O'Riordan had died. Met a lad in Limerick at a disco. And it's amazing to see it have this incredible rebirth again. You see this quite a lot with older songs. It's generally down to some sort of sync license where it's been used in a new film or a TV show. But this one's quite unusual to the point that actually the Rolling Stone magazine
And the Restless Entertainment podcast have actually done analysis on this. And what they're saying is this is slightly different because, yes, it has been featured in recent TV shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty on Netflix. But actually what's fueling this one, Clare, is that it's become a trending sound on TikTok.
So what that means is that young people aren't seeing it being used as a soundtrack anymore.
to other things that they're watching they're actually using it to soundtrack their own lives and there's actually like the phenomenon's gotten so big there's been a number of remixes or re-edits I have one that's quite interesting it features the Mexican pop singer Baratti who actually sings alongside Dolores to we'll see what people think of it
Don't let it burn, don't let it fade I'm sure I might be rude, but it's just you Such a beautiful song in any language, isn't it?
It really, really is. It's amazing to hear how well it stands up.
So that is Linger, which is trending online. Now, something that you're going to have to explain to us from the get-go is blue dot fever.
What is this? So blue dot fever is used to describe, well, basically when you go on to try and book tickets online, usually on Ticketmaster, the available seats will be shown by blue dots when you're looking at the venue map. And so what's happening at the moment is more and more big artists who've kind of booked tours where they're going to play really, really big arenas all around the globe.
And people are noticing when they go on these tickets that would have been predicted to sell out very, very quickly, like we saw with, say, Oasis last year. there's a lot of blue dots. And so people have coined the term blue dot fever to describe this. And they're suggesting that it's contagious. Now, there's a number of reasons this could be happening.
