And as I've recently learned, even college football fans are having a hard time keeping track of who plays for which team. It has to do with something called the transfer portal. Suffice it to say, I needed a guide to help me understand this story. And fortunately, I found one.

It started Friday night with Miami, but it was... And last season was a standout one in many ways. And part of that centered around one particular head coach. For people, you know, honestly, including myself, who don't follow college football that closely, who is Lane Kiffin?
Lane Kiffin is a coach that's had many lives. He was something of a wunderkind early in his career. He's been labeled an offensive genius. He has been a troll on social media. He's been many things. And he's been a head coach at some of the most prominent programs in college football. He's been an NFL head coach. He's also had a history of leaving places in very ugly and public ways. So he's kind of been, the best way I can compare it to people who don't follow sports super closely is he would make a really great character on Real Housewives. Like he just, he brings drama, he lives drama.

And aside from being good TV, he's also got an excellent track record as a coach. And that's what we're talking about this week. This story is more about the sport of football than any other episode we've covered. But even if you're not a college football fan, it's worth understanding this story because Lane Kiffin is emblematic of the way college sports are changing and the way colleges are defined by their sports programs, sometimes more than anything else.
