This followed a FOIA request that missed the deadline to produce the documents and was the basis for the lawsuit. The DEA has recently responded to the recommendation by claiming they are now conducting their own review of the schedule status of cannabis as a schedule I substance. Their review should be scientifically based on available medical data and public policy. This could potentially lead to a major shift in the cannabis industry as it would open up more opportunities for research, production, and distribution.
