Growing up in evangelical Christianity Lucas struggled to accept his queerness. Overwhelmed with shame, he signed up for conversion therapy at the fundamentalist Christian Liberty University he was a student at. Lucas shares the details of the practices he had to go through, his journey of coming out and accepting his gayness, and his work in helping Christians reconcile their faith and sexuality. After a futile two-year attempt to change who I was born to be, I called myself a human abomination and almost took my own life. He holds graduate degrees from McMaster University, Vanderbilt University, and Florida Atlantic University. His current research focuses on homophobia, evangelicalism, and Christian fundamentalism, and he is currently putting together an edited collection of conversion-therapy narratives as told by conversion-therapy survivors.
