I didn't bring up a jersey to hold up today. I feel like today is like the jersey hold up day.
Yeah, I know. Just bring anything. No. Do we need a microphone just to kind of hold up? Hold the mic.
Chapter 3: What is Ryan Johnson's role as the new general manager of the Canucks?
Have a mic stand. Pass the mic stand over. Maybe that's what we do here. You know... Introductory press conferences are very difficult to fail. If you have one layup during your tenure, whether it's a GM or a head coach, your introductory press conference is the easiest, safest space for you. You have to be really poor at making a battle.
You have to say some really stupid stuff or be a deer in headlights and just hit all the wrong notes to fail your opening press conference.
Essentially, you're just extending the pitch you did to get the job. A little bit of shrouds of mystery and pull some curtains down to, again... Not reveal everything, but it's a joyous day.
Yeah, it is. And it's, you know, generally speaking, introductory press conferences go very well. Now, sometimes if you're in Toronto and somebody asks you if you're a con artist, that might be a little bit different. But that's not exactly the situation here in Vancouver because we don't look at the Sedins as con artists.
Chapter 4: What are the Sedins' goals for the Canucks organization?
We don't look at Ryan Johnson as con artists. So there wasn't anything quite like that being thrown at those three gentlemen today. Now, they didn't have to say that.
Again, let's also be fair. That was lobbied at... Yeah, yeah. the Toronto staff and John Chayka. Yeah. But yes, as far as like what the principal parties are doing. Yeah. Like opening day pressers are like the first day of school, right? Like it's a, everyone's happy. Everyone's just kind of smiling.
It's like, all right, here we go. It's hard to screw it up.
Chapter 5: How do the Sedins plan to restore the team's culture?
This text unsigned. Unless you're Ted Lasso. Great shout. Right, yeah. He got dragged. Ted Lasso got dragged. But that made sense. That was a John Chayka. Yeah, it was. Although John Chayka didn't have to describe offside or something like that. You know what offside is. But it's a bit different, of course, right? But yeah, so it's one of those things where obviously it's one you don't fail.
But having said all that, I do think they hit the right notes. And again, the truth is going to be in the actions.
Chapter 6: What challenges do the Canucks face in rebuilding?
The only thing that matters is how do you conduct business? Can you take this team through a rebuild and have them be successful again? Can you bring pride back to the organization? But as far as hitting all the right notes and also acknowledging that a lot of the issues that have persisted here in Vancouver, especially the past year or so, I think that was refreshing.
Yeah, we'll get into this later on in the open too, but immediately, within the first 90 seconds, you got a far more concise and clear understanding of what the intent is behind what Daniel and Henrik Sedin want to do and Ryan Johnson obviously included, but I'm referring to the opening 90 seconds of Daniel and Henrik Sedin. Again, we have sat here for the past week talking about culture.
Can you restore the culture of what the Vancouver Canucks are again? And For them to immediately... And also, just kind of highlighting as much as we've talked about, like, them coming in, in their roles, we talk about, like, every ex-player talks about their leadership example that they set in the dressing room and how it was the Sedin culture of... being in the room.
Their presence was felt and known, and their principles were applied constantly to every player when they played. And we sat here saying, hey, the big thing, the big benefit is going to be those guys back in the fold as key decision makers, and hopefully that influence filters down everywhere. And then you think, okay, well, how is that going to translate now to them as executives?
Chapter 7: What impact does the recent coaching change have on the Canucks?
And within the first 90 seconds... They hit all the notes. Yeah. Before any questions and they had to fire and deal with all that. Can we play back the first 90 seconds here? Well, I'll bring this up. But like the acknowledgement of like the first thing that were out of their mouths were condolences to the Garrett McLean families.
And you think these guys, we talk so much of like, do you know what it means to be part of the organization? Do you know what a part means to the organization has an understanding of the fabric in the community? All of that immediately right away. Hey, we want to acknowledge these hurting parties that our hearts are also with them. And then like you immediately connect that for the fan base.
And it's like, hey, these guys get it. These guys constantly get it. And then you get the vision, you get the slogan, connected, committed purpose.
Chapter 8: What are the latest headlines from around the NHL, including the Oilers?
We'll play it all here. But like within the first 90 seconds, I got a sense of what they want to accomplish.
First off, we want to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of John Garrett and Ernie Punch McLean. I want to thank ownership Francesco and Roberto Aquilini for this incredible opportunity. When they came to us with their vision and the plan for the next upcoming years, we got very excited. We spent 26 years in this amazing city.
We were drafted in 1999 and played 17 unforgettable seasons alongside some of our best friends, teammates, and staff. In 2018, we became part of the very spirited fan base in the city. We were fans for three years before we came back in a management role.
We then turned into player development, were part of a little bit of scouting, coaching, so we've seen a lot of different aspects of this organization. Every successful team we've been a part of had values, cornerstones that could answer one question, why are we here and what do we stand for? Three words that we will live by, connected, committed, and purpose.
We want to reestablish the connection from top to bottom within this organization, but also in the community, to this fan base, and to the city of Vancouver and the province of BC. And we have a clear vision that will connect us to be a sustainable winning culture.
The sedenary extends to oration as well. How they were exchanging their... Yeah. Handing off each sentence to one another as well. But to your point, that... hitting those notes, but then ending it with, or really hitting home the connected, committed purpose. Like if that's a prepared statement, which I'm sure they thought about.
It was like they had the cards there.
Exactly. They put a lot of thought into that, but that's kind of the right note to hit right off the bat too.
Yes. And that quote of we want to reestablish the connection from the top to the bottom within the organization, but also the community. Like we've chatted here so many times about is the community presence large enough right now? And I know work is done behind the scenes and not everyone wants recognition all of the time.
