I'm doing very well. I'm glad the sun has come out because I'm making dinner. We may eat outside. And I'm so happy to be talking to you guys again.
Well, we always love having you on the show, but what are you making for food?
I'm trying a new recipe, although it's not entirely new because I test drove it about one in the morning on Saturday. Sometimes I do that late at night. I'll cook something just for myself to see if it works. So this is a pretty simple chicken with tomatoes and capers. It's pretty easy to do.
Are you cooking and eating at 1 a.m.?
I did that time. But not a whole meal. Not a whole meal. Sure. Just eating the chicken breast and seeing how it tasted. And if it works out and if it passes the test, then I can make it for other people.
Ian's in the lab late at night working out his recipes.
I didn't realize I could text you at 2 a.m. and be like, what are you eating right now?

Chapter 2: When can we expect the Canucks to name their next Head Coach?
And he's like Crosby shooting pucks into the dryer.
Yeah, I've always really enjoyed... cooking apparently according to my mother when I was like 10 years old I would just get up and throw together breakfast for myself like you know pancakes or bacon and eggs just simple stuff but I've always liked cooking and I do find it very relaxing and I find it satisfying if people enjoy your food so especially since we had kids I do right when I'm home
I do most of the cooking at dinner. My wife obviously has a lot of heavy lifting when I'm on road trips, and she does a lot of the other domestic things that I don't really like to do. So it's a pretty good balance. We're a pretty good team.
Yeah, no, listen, obviously there's a lot of longevity there. So, of course, you guys have figured it out very much. And especially when you cover a team like the Canucks, you need to find as much relaxation as you can when you get away from the rain.
Yeah, that was, I'd say that was a moderate.
That was moderate, yeah.
Moderately successful segue.
Yeah.
Not your best. No, I've done way worse.

Chapter 3: What challenges are faced in rounding out the coaching staff?
especially at this point for casual fans, it's just, it's hardly registering because, you know, for a casual fan, who's going to spend, you know, $600 a ticket to see a group stage game, not involving Canada or a team that you really care about. But I do think it's going to be a tremendous event overall.
And I do think, you know, with Canada playing a couple of their preliminary round games here, I think once, once the tournament opens, and Canada's involved, I think people are really going to get engaged because it is a special event. And we'll see if it's a special time for Canadian soccer. Certainly it's at an entirely different place than it was 10 years ago.
And if Canada can have some success as a co-host on home soil, I think that's really going to grow the game. Unfortunately, you can't grow a stadium for the Whitecaps. The owners have to pay for that. But I think the game itself stands to have huge growth in North America from there. from the second appearance of the world cup.
Yeah. You know, I hear you on that and I'm going to do another segue or at least it's big's fault. I tried my best. Um, but, but nonetheless, what's going to happen first, the first world cup match happens in Vancouver or the Canucks have a head coach.
Well, the first world cup match still a couple of weeks away. Yeah. So, so I'm going to say they have a head coach. I think they could have a head coach by the end of this, this week. and certainly before the World Cup. I know, and I have wondered as well, like why is this process, because it seems like such a slam dunk for Manny to be the coach, but there's always things to straighten out.
And I don't just mean like, you know, contracts and salaries, but, you know, staffing and what's the staff going to be comprised of and, you know, who picks whom for the staff? What are the roles going to be? So there's a lot of things that, uh, I think they want to have sorted out before, before they can make an announcement.
Um, but you know, I'm hearing that things are progressing, maybe not as fast as, as some people would like, but they're moving. Uh, I sit, I think they're still moving in the right direction and we'll see if there's an announcement later on this week.
How like assuming it's, it's Manny, uh, at some stage, um, How should we be viewing the first couple of years of this? Is it removed from the standings? Is it just which players and how many players are getting better?
I've heard it said the greatest day of motorhome ownership is the day you buy the motorhome. because all the possibilities are limitless and you've got no problems. All you've got is a bright future. In some respects, the most exciting time of this whole rebuild is right now because they're going to do it.

Chapter 4: How does Iain view the current state of the Canucks' roster?
And it certainly would happen before the summer.
Is that the biggest, uh, you know, like the next thing to knock off on the list of the, uh, triumphant to do list of some of the veterans, like after the coaching thing is sorted, whether it's the next couple of days, um, the, the roster building process begins then.
Yeah. I think the roster building back, I think that's just going to be in increments over, over a long period of time. And, um, And between now, I mean, really, what's your deadline? The deadline is next season. And if you want to be a little ahead of that, then obviously for training camp, maybe you've got a slightly different roster than you have now. But again, there's no games being played.
There's nobody to coach. Plus a bunch of guys already signed. Yes. Yeah. But I mean, you... still have to work through that if you want them if you want to uh move off of guys obviously you have to you have to deal with them on on their trade restrictions so i just think the roster is sort of a big picture thing um
And really, I don't want to be philosophical about it, but I mean, by big picture, I mean over years. Like whatever their roster is for September, that's not quote-unquote the rebuild roster, and now they just need to get ready. They're going to be working at the roster literally for years.
But I think in terms of what we're all thinking of, of who else might be leaving from last year's team, I think that's a process that they can just work at over the summer, and they'll have some clarity before next season about who's not going to be back.
Before we let you go, you were in Colorado. You watched the Colorado Avalanche play the Minnesota Wild. How surprised are you that the Avs are now down three games to none against the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final?
Yeah, I'm stunned because Colorado is an extraordinarily good team. Obviously, the injury to Makar has been a huge blow, but they do so much else right, you know, that team under Jared Bednar, that I'm really surprised. And, you know, I'm also very impressed by Vegas.
And it is kind of a reminder as well, like it's interesting to see the two conference finals because in the East you've got Montreal, which is probably the new poster child for the rebuild, you know, because they've gotten there so quickly. They've got some ā really good young and exciting players. Who are we going to get better? And then in, but in the West, you've got, you've got Vegas.
