It looks like still everybody's assuming, and I think rightfully so, that Manny Malhotra will be the Canucks' next head coach. However, that has not yet been solidified. Now... There has been some debate about whether the Canucks have even spoken to other candidates or if they have other people on their list.
Chapter 6: What are the implications of trading down in the draft for the Canucks?
But a few things are always going on at the same time when you're looking to fire a head coach. One is you have to make sure that you have a, what are our other options list? And also, who are the options we like for the staff for the head coach? Who's going to be the defensive specialist? Who's going to be the power play specialist? How are you looking to build out that staff?
And how do you go about curating a list of potential candidates? Is there going to be an associate coach? I think all those things are to be figured out. And as much as it's still an ongoing situation, the Canucks talking to Manny and his camp and trying to figure out a contract.
Chapter 7: How do team needs affect the draft strategies of the Canucks and other teams?
And I'm not saying the Canucks have reached out and started an interview process for other head coaching candidates. But I do believe there is a level of... My understanding is there's a level of due diligence being done. Now, I don't think it's one of those where they've set up in-person interviews or like formal interviews with other coaching candidates.
But I do believe as this process goes on that they are putting together a list of candidates that might be options as head coach if for whatever reason it doesn't work out with Manny. So I do think as much as the talk is all about the focus on finance.
figuring out a deal with Manny I do think at the time they are still putting together other names and options not only for the associate assistant coaches and special coaches but also other head coaching candidates if things don't get consummated here with Manny.
Is that also a process too? Because if we go back to last year, how much of the conversations did we have as Adam Foote was building out the entire bench of a get an experienced head coach along the bench?

So do you do part of the due diligence now talking to some other head coaching candidates? Maybe there's, again, there's a couple openings around the league
in and of itself, if those don't get filled by the candidates you speak to, circle back opportunity to say, hey, do you want to be part of the bench here, still be in the coaching fold for any organization, because there's former head coaches on the benches across the league right now, just to get the idea of
hey, we want some experience here because, again, I know Manny's got experience, obviously, as an AHL head coach, but he's got more experience than Adam Foote has had as a head coach, but he'd still probably want a...
been through it been through the process of it all understanding like the dynamics at the nhl level yeah and i think all those factors are part of it when it comes to the whole manny situation but i thought it was interesting because there was this assumption that all the canucks are focused on fully is just figuring things out with manny and again i think that is the number one priority but i do believe that they are still doing their due diligence in terms of figuring out what's going to happen here because there's i mean here's the thing like manny can say no
Yeah, of course. You know, I'm not anticipating that he will, but you're negotiating a contract. And if he's asking for a bigger number or, say, more security than the Canucks are willing to offer, potentially, could that... put a wrench into the process. And again, not reporting, just kind of saying.
So I do think the team is aware that as much as they want to have Manny as a coach, you still have to have your other options set up here. So that's why I wouldn't be shocked if we hear something over the next few days to next week, if things don't get figured out with Manny, that the Canucks have a list of other candidates, for instance, that they are keeping in mind. Next week.
i'm not saying it will but i'm just saying it's one of these things is it's i want to say this is dragging out no but it's also something that's not coming together really quickly when we talked last week i think it was last monday or tuesday when we talked to elliot we kind of did the over under 12 and a half days i think that was the tuesday and like that took us to the end of may right so like here we are it's the 26th and you know the three of us were emphatic it was like under under under um so here we are like we're trending close to that kind of
