65.702 - 67.506 Unknown

Just the mic stands here.

67.646 - 69.21 Satyar Shah

Oh, you can actually extend them out a little bit.

69.23 - 70.112 Unknown

They're telescopic.

70.352 - 70.512 Satyar Shah

Yeah.

Chapter 2: Why is Ryan Johnson considered the leading candidate for GM?

431.298 - 446.78 Satyar Shah

We don't know exactly what that's going to look like. We'll see what the AGMs look like here. And I would imagine we'll see him bring in somebody, but how extensive is that going to be in terms of remaking the entire organization? I think that's a big question that you have. But, What is his track record?

0

447 - 452.087 Satyar Shah

He's won the Calder Cup, which is obviously the big thing you can point to as the GM of the Abbotsford Canucks.

0

452.147 - 468.771 Unknown

Especially something that was an organizational priority, not just to win the Calder Cup, but to establish the brand in Abbotsford, build this up and have a competitive product. The fact that it culminated in a Calder Cup, given the efforts that were put into it, huge feather in its cap.

0

470.084 - 479.856 Satyar Shah

In terms of other successes, there aren't a ton you can look at in terms of players that have been developed. And actually, the ones who have are the ones that have come through the ranks more recently.

0

480.076 - 491.39 Satyar Shah

For instance, if you go through all the players that he's helped identify and the players he's helped develop, especially through the Abbotsford Canucks as opposed to the Utica Comets when the Comets are so much farther away and the situation was so different.

491.67 - 512.062 Satyar Shah

But how much of that track record, which isn't the strongest in terms of player development and procurement over time, do you put on the GM of the... AHL team or the people that are in charge of bringing talent in for you to develop in the first place and also giving you the resources necessary because I think it's a tale of two different developmental programs as well for Ryan Johnson.

512.463 - 529.552 Satyar Shah

The resources that the Utica Comets had versus what the Abbotsford Canucks have are completely different. And when he's been presented to be in a position with the Abbey Canucks, where there are more resources at hand, they're closer to Vancouver, we've seen a lot more success in terms of players that are developing right now.

530.053 - 549.819 Satyar Shah

If you look at the success stories, the ones that he's helped bring across... Obviously, Dakota Joshua has been talked about in terms of a free agent they brought in. But the ones most recently, Kudryatsev, Shilovs, DPD, Linus Carlson, Max Sasson, and the ones who are showing promise, Mueller, Mignol, Mancini, Laker, Mackey. Those are the ones who are more recent.

550.5 - 554.284 Satyar Shah

Which track record is more indicative of what Rian Johnson can do?

Chapter 3: What has been the process behind the Canucks' GM selection?

859.616 - 867.465 Satyar Shah

Like he's somebody who fits that character mold. So you are really honing in on that being a big asset for the three front people of your organization.

0

867.645 - 870.909 Unknown

But that's a macro umbrella conversation.

871.439 - 889.026 Unknown

Once you start getting into what I was just talking about, like player evaluation, talent evaluation, talent assessment, whatever it is, that's now we're getting more into the granular levels. And this is something from the GM's role or the key hockey decision maker, however you're training the people around you, the scouting department, this is the thing that you've got to get right.

0

889.306 - 896.417 Unknown

And you've got to have a consistent language for everyone as far as getting it all right. But if you're making changes in that department too...

896.498 - 906.35 Satyar Shah

Yeah. How do you assess talent? Well, and that's a big part of it. And then the other part of it is, too, is where cynicism comes in is, are you going to be willing to make the changes necessary?

906.871 - 913.559 Unknown

Well, we're already getting this question. 650, 650, Daryl. Is Rian Johnson the guy that would fire Adam Foote? How is anything going to be different?

914.219 - 940.146 Satyar Shah

Again, time is going to tell us what's going to happen here ultimately. But I do think the level of, can you be cutthroat? Can you not believe in any sacred cows? Can you be a person who is willing to make the tough decisions? And I would say... Part of the question I think that some may have had about Rian Johnson internally to some extent is... Can he be cutthroat enough?

940.807 - 961.036 Satyar Shah

Obviously, if he's becoming the GM, I think you believe he can be. But that's a legitimate question. Not only in terms of how you negotiate and handle a player acquisition and procurement and all that, but also in terms of how you deal with people individually. Can you draw that line between friendship and professionalism?

Chapter 4: How does Ryan Johnson's experience compare to other candidates?

1103.961 - 1110.831 Satyar Shah

And again, that could be a low bar of what's happened here in Vancouver over the years because we haven't seen the team have the success that you want it to have.

0

1111.131 - 1131.327 Satyar Shah

But I don't think we're dealing in a situation here as much as I can sit here and talk about there are other executives that I could point to and say, hey, this person may have been a better hire that he's not somebody that is being hired that has no idea of how to do the job. So I do think that there is a level of this can work out, you know, as long as you can nail those aspects of a rebuild.

0

1131.347 - 1146.643 Satyar Shah

And I do think that he is going to be given autonomy here to... let his vision play out, and also make a decision on what this front office looks like. And I would still imagine we are going to see changes. So I think that's why I do have some faith that they can figure it out here.

0

1146.663 - 1155.913 Satyar Shah

Because I think based on the things I've heard so far, that I think he would be willing to do certain things here to push this team forward. And if he does execute on that, at the end of the day, that means the team's going to be successful.

0

1156.394 - 1164.122 Unknown

Bob and Victoria, what's the point of all the candidates in the search? Will this will be the same? Do it just a different...

1164.963 - 1188.895 Unknown

day the owner is the fraud in the process same old same old that's what clueless bob in victoria uh again you go through the process to try to speak to as many people get different perspectives yeah different ideas that maybe are applicable to you yeah ultimately yeah you can land on the same candidate you had from the beginning yeah it does happen those things you know and i think the process in and of itself can be very valuable if you do take something out of it

1190.174 - 1206.675 Satyar Shah

Do you learn something out of the process that you're now applying to how you're doing the job and how you want to see Ryan do the job and how you view your entire organization? If it's in one ear and out another and you just land back on the same guy, then it has no value. But it comes down to how you're taking advantage of that situation.

1206.755 - 1210.039 Unknown

Well, especially if they went down the road very far, seemingly with some...

1210.019 - 1225.782 Satyar Shah

Yeah, so I think, you know, like we mentioned on this show, we've been pretty consistent that Evan Gold and Ryan Johnson, the last little while, were the two remaining candidates who were very much in the mix, right? And there was a lot of momentum, believed to be momentum, around Evan Gold, and we talked about that yesterday.
