We got a lot coming up. Yeah, and we'll talk to Brandon as well, and I'm looking forward to chatting with him about his opinion of Manny and RJ. And spoiler alert, it's going to be a high opinion that keeps him in very high regard. So we'll have some fun with Brandon when he joins us in the next segment. But the news has finally come down, and it came down last night.
Big 24 hours. Yeah. It's official. 23rd head coach in Canucks history.
Yeah, so the average, like, one every two and a bit years. Yeah. The worst kept secret? Yeah, it's up there. It's up there.
But it's official now.
Chapter 4: What did Ryan Johnson say about drafting Caleb Malhotra?
It's sorted. Yeah. I mean, it's one of those things that we discussed quite a bit. We mentioned it even yesterday that... There's nothing to suggest he's not going to be the head coach. Nothing's been finalized yet. And it just seems like all the stuff that's been happening behind the scenes is about getting your ducks in a row more than anything else. And here we are.

We've spoken about Manny in depth, right?
Because we've been kind of talking about this inevitability for quite some time.
Chapter 5: How does the Canucks' management view the rebuilding process?
There were a couple of things that really stood out from RJ's media availability today. And the biggest question in regards to Manny is the most obvious one. Now that you've hired the head coach, can you draft his son, Caleb?
Yeah.
Yeah, look, later on this week, Manny will speak. We'll have more thoughts on how he presents himself for the media as well. But RJ is the one that spoke today. And yeah, this has been a focus throughout the course of this time. We've had differing opinions of, hey, does it make sense to do this?
The thing that I guess I have a bit of a hang-up on it is, is this the first thing you want to tackle? I do think the personalities involved here might be able to overcome the issues. But as we've discussed, it's not how does Rian Johnson handle it? How does Manny Malhotra handle it? How does Caleb Malhotra handle it? How do 20 other people handle it with the presence of...
Chapter 6: What are the expectations for Elias Pettersson moving forward?
the son in the locker room coached by the father. And that's the part that is maybe the most challenging. I do think the personalities involved can figure it out. But it's hard to get, you know, 25 plus people all on board on a decision. It makes it challenging. But the way it was answered today, I think he played it the right way.
Yeah. And you know what? Let's play that answer. Here's RJ talking about the possibility of drafting Caleb Malhotra now that Manny is the Canucks new head coach.
Well, I think it's a great question and I'm going to answer it completely honestly. In the initial discussion with Manny on this position, it was just very clear that each component and decisions and hirings or drafting, none would impact the other based on any certain type scenario. I mean that in the sense of I had to be very honest and clear with Manny that
I want him as the head coach of the Vancouver Canucks. The Vancouver Canucks also sit in a position that his son is possible in where he sits and where the evaluating's gone on throughout the year with our group, that there is a possibility at what percent, I can't tell you, but that the Vancouver Canucks select Caleb.
Chapter 7: How does the team plan to address potential trade scenarios?
I wanted to make sure that we weren't sitting there June 20th and Manny was in a spot where he said, hey, RJ, like, I really wish I would have known that was a scenario or I really wish there was just a little bit more clarity when we had the initial discussions that this might be a possibility.
So I wanted to make sure that he had time to talk with with his wife and with his family, understanding that that would be a possible scenario and that there was no hesitation on him moving forward and taking this position. I felt that was I owed him that to have that conversation.
And in regards to the draft, as we're going through the process and obviously decisions still being made, we're at the Combine here going through interviews. We'll have more meetings with our amateur staff that's done an outstanding job getting to know these players. And we'll make our decisions based off of who the best player available is when we pick.
And there's not going to be an outside influence changing who that might be.
That's Ryan Johnson, Canucks general manager, speaking today about the possibility of the Canucks drafting Caleb Malhotra now that Manny Malhotra is the Canucks new head coach. And he essentially said, we've discussed it. And if it does come to pass that the Canucks draft Caleb, Manny's okay with it. He would not take the job otherwise.
And the Canucks are okay with Manny being the coach and drafting Caleb if that does come to pass because they've already talked about these things and they're on the same page. That does not mean the Canucks will inevitably draft Caleb Malhotra third overall because a number of things. One, he might go before that.

Chapter 8: What are the key takeaways from the episode regarding the Canucks' future?
Unlikely, but he could. And the second part is maybe somebody they have higher than Caleb is there at three. So there's no guarantee here that the Canucks end up taking him. But... I've thought about this a lot, and we've spoken quite a bit about this, that I don't think it's ideal for a first-time NHL head coach to also be the coach of his son.
Now, there's a good chance Caleb's going to college anyways and is a year away, but nonetheless, you're talking about very early on in his head coaching career as an NHL coach.
If everything goes right, Caleb would play in 2020, like, at the latest.
At the end of next season.
Yeah. Potentially. So, like, if... Certainly within the time frame of Manny's contract.
Yes. Now, at the same time, you can't always strive for perfection. Because I think of the old philosopher Voltaire's quote about, hey... Hold on. Let me put my renaissance hat on here. Essentially, I'm not going to do it, but basically, chasing perfection leads to you... Like, perfection is the enemy of good, right? Yes. Essentially paraphrasing what he had to say.
Because if you're always striving for the perfect outcome, the perfect situation, the perfect scenario, you'll be waiting forever. Yes. Because you can't wait for the perfect situation. And as long as you have confidence in the individuals involved, and I think that you have a good process, I'm okay with it, even though it's not what I would ideally prefer them to do.
And the second, maybe most important part about all this is the Canucks are in the very early stages of their rebuild. coming up with reasons to not do things when it comes to drafting certain players at this early stage of rebuilding the hockey team, when we don't even know if Manny's going to be here in a few years.
We don't even know what's going to happen with these players that you can't get in your own way. If you truly believe the best player available, it's Caleb at number three. So even though it's not ideal, it doesn't mean it can't work.
