Canucks Central

The Open: Was it a Goal?

28 Apr 2026

Transcription

Chapter 1: What was the controversial goal in the Anaheim Ducks game?

25.698 - 46.44 Unknown

Back in on Canuck Central. This hour is brought to you by your lower mainland Boston pizza. The playoffs are here and BP is ready. So skip the couch, catch every hit, every goal, every save, every playoff beard. This is how you watch playoff hockey as we come to you live from the Kintec studio, Sat and Bic, and keep texting your thoughts to our Dunbar Lumber text inbox, 650-650.

47.301 - 63.772 Unknown

Yeah, man, people are... Very confused by the goal-no-goal situation with the Edmonton Oilers. Honestly, the way I come out is I think it should have been a goal. The call on the ice was what it was.

0

63.792 - 72.985 Sat

I think just another moment to add to the register, something we've been talking about, like operational and procedural process.

0

Chapter 2: Were the officials positioned correctly during the goal review?

72.965 - 76.269 Unknown

Yeah, I mean, why can't we have a little camera in the post, inside the post, on the line?

0

76.529 - 88.725 Sat

Like, right on the post, on the line. That would have told us everything. I'm more worked up about, like, the referee positioning on this play, rather than it's like, hey, did they come to the right call? Because I think it just, it looks very obvious that the puck is in.

0

88.945 - 94.011 Bik

Yeah. Okay? That's not, that shouldn't be the debated part. No, we know how circles work.

0

94.031 - 97.435 Sat

Yeah, they ultimately, we know how circles work.

0

Chapter 3: What technology could improve officiating in hockey?

98.417 - 114.278 Sat

Like, ultimately, they... Got the decision right. My personal thought. But why was no official in a spot to be able to make a call? Why did you have to make it up? Be like, oh, it's a goal. Now we'll go through the process.

0

114.713 - 137.953 Sat

that's the stuff that really frustrates me and we see it fairly often like we've been here at Rogers Arena a couple of years ago and they essentially just like made up high-sticking calls on Tyler Myers or like oh now we're gonna go review it it's like what is going on here you have a rule book to follow the processes to get all this to put yourself in the best position to make the right calls you shouldn't have been guessing when you're on the ice

0

137.933 - 140.477 Unknown

Yeah, I don't disagree. Hockey does move fast, right?

0

Chapter 4: How does the referee positioning affect game outcomes?

140.617 - 158.582 Unknown

You're trying to keep up with the play so things can happen. That's why ultimately you need a fail-safe technology-wise. And I think, again, having a camera in the post isn't perfect because there could be some obstruction with a stick or a skate or something that takes away that view. But more chances to get it right.

0

158.902 - 175.202 Unknown

It was interesting listening to the 32 Thoughts pod about the Hawkeye technology. There's too much interference with bodies getting in the way where it would obstruct the vision, whereas with tennis, it's very obvious. Like, the ball is in flight. Nothing's obstructing the view, so you know very easily where the ball land, how it got struck.

0

175.443 - 184.413 Unknown

It's a lot different in terms of how tennis goes because you only have the two players, whereas hockey has so many other bodies flying around, coming across the screen, and that can mess with the technology to some extent.

0

184.473 - 185.774 Sat

And the point I was making to Frank, right?

0

Chapter 5: What are the implications of the upcoming draft lottery?

185.794 - 202.477 Sat

Like, a tennis ball, soccer ball, it's approaching the line, right? It's... a static movement. It's a ball approaching a line. Like, how many different ways does a puck cross a line? Yeah, it bounces. On its edge, is it spinning? If it spins at the right angle, does it cross the line at the right time? Like, there's so many different ways the puck can cross the line.

0

202.497 - 207.044 Sat

And I know the popular one, especially after yesterday's, is have the second line.

0

Chapter 6: Who are the top potential draft picks for the Canucks?

207.264 - 219.021 Sat

Yeah. Right? And so, okay, that's... In a situation like that, if you have a second line, you see puck is touching line, it's definitely in. There's no debate about it. Sure. That's probably the next best...

0

219.254 - 236.683 Unknown

option we have here is do you add a second line yeah so we'll see what the league does with it at the same time you know nobody here who's not an Oilers fan doesn't care how the Oilers feel about it but it certainly created a lot of buzz in terms of discourse around the National Hockey League Let's get to the open.

Chapter 7: What considerations should teams have when drafting players?

249.182 - 271.39 Unknown

The GM search continues. More names kind of surfacing. Interviews going on to the second stage. I know there's been some various reports on that. I know Drance wrote about it as well. And ultimately, I don't think anything is overly close. Still, you know, it's still a little ways away. The biggest question is, are you going to have something done before or after the draft lottery?

0

271.41 - 278.544 Unknown

Not that I think it matters, but just because we have that date for next week, next Tuesday, the draft lottery is coming up. Will they have a GM in place by then?

0

Chapter 8: How can Vancouver's recent success influence future drafts?

278.584 - 285.238 Unknown

It seems somewhat unlikely unless things really come together here over the next few days. It's a week away.

0

285.218 - 300.271 Unknown

Given you're going through the second round of interviews, and what I heard was, not that they're not moving on to the second round of interviews, but it doesn't mean that just because they're going to the second round, that they may not also interview somebody else still for the first time as well. Sure.

0

300.712 - 313.403 Unknown

That came up as a possibility when I was talking to people today that, yes, for many, they're moving on to the second round and they're going to narrow it down to a short list, but it doesn't mean they may not consider other candidates potentially here over the course of this week.

0

313.383 - 330.679 Sat

The one thing that's interesting too, as we've been talking about here for a couple of weeks now, is it doesn't seem like there's a lot of conflict between the three teams that are looking for candidates right now of, oh, this person's interviewing in all three spots and they get to pick and choose.

0

330.739 - 353.615 Sat

So does that speed up the process because you don't have competing candidates that you can just go through your internal process and say, hey, we're getting these guys to our questionnaires, our process here, and they aren't wasting more time or wasting our time having to now go talk to Toronto to go fly to Nashville. And that slows down the process. Can everyone kind of speed up?

353.655 - 365.937 Sat

Because Toronto seems like they have their group of people they're looking at. Nashville seems like they have their group. And Vancouver's got their group. Would that shorten the entire process? wait here to name someone by a week.

365.957 - 381.979 Unknown

Right. Yeah. And that very well could, right? And I think it's still somewhat of a fluid situation, but they're certainly getting further along in the process. But I'm not sure that they're at a stage quite yet where that shortlist has fully materialized. So we'll see how that goes here over the next little while.

381.999 - 400.501 Unknown

And I think what Drance wrote is generally, I mean, not generally, I mean, it's accurate in terms of how things have gone and we'll see how it happens. I know there's been some names who have stood up surface. I know Dolly Wall mentioned, wondered about Marcus Naslund. And I couldn't get an answer in terms of no, there's no chance on Marcus Naslin. What I was told was it's probably unlikely.

400.661 - 417.505 Unknown

Now, Naslin was in town. I think he was here to sign some autographs. That was in early April, yeah. Yeah, with Pastime Sports. So I think that's why he was in town more than anything else because I know he's been spotted in town. People are wondering, what is that all about? Does that mean there has been some level of discussion with the team? I can't say one way or another.
