Chapter 1: What updates are there on the Vancouver Canucks coaching situation?

0

32.026 - 61.08 Jamie Dodd

What's up? Welcome to Canucks Talk on Sportsnet 650. I'm Jamie Dodd. My co-host is Thomas Drance. Drance covers the Canucks for The Athletic as well. We're broadcasting live from the Kintec studio. Step strong with orthotics and footwear from Kintec 650. 650 is the Dunbar Lumber text line. What's going on, Drance? Not much. We have the Norway-Latvia game on. Apparently. Well done, man.

0

61.2 - 75.614 Jamie Dodd

Apparently. The other TV is showing Sweden, Switzerland. But yes, I just looked up and we are locked in on Norway, Latvia here. Linus Carlson has a goal we might need to get. Is that a quarterfinal or is this like a relegation game or something? There's no way Norway, Latvia is a quarterfinal.

0

76.235 - 76.935 Thomas Drance

I'm not sure, man.

0

77.176 - 82.481 Jamie Dodd

I didn't even know they showed the relegation games on TV. Maybe it's.

83.602 - 91.425 Thomas Drance

Yeah, I think it's probably. I don't know. Like, I honestly don't know. I think it is a, I mean, look, I'll check the website. We'll figure it out. Just do it.

91.445 - 108.398 Jamie Dodd

Figure it out. Figure it out right now. I'm working. But yeah, we got world championship hockey on here. It's a quarterfinal. Norway-Latvia is a quarterfinal. So one of these teams. Well, Norway had some surprising results, including a victory over Sweden. One of these teams will play for a medal. at some stage. That's incredible.

108.578 - 109.22 Thomas Drance

That really is.

110.103 - 115.838 Jamie Dodd

Wow. Very cool. I'd probably bet on Latvia, but maybe Norway. Maybe I'm sleeping on Norwegian hockey.

Chapter 2: How did Carolina perform in Game 4 against Montreal?

218.398 - 231.306 Thomas Drance

Vegas is dealing with some guys who have been working through injuries for a long, long time. You know, you got to get back to... having Eric Robinson throw hits on Mark Stone again, like, as quickly as possible. Yeah, and...

0

235.252 - 243.687 Jamie Dodd

Sorry, because you said Montreal never had the puck. I was just trying to think of exactly what it was. They were down 3-0 on home ice in the third period of a more or less must-win game.

0

243.847 - 244.027 Thomas Drance

Yes.

0

244.348 - 250.839 Jamie Dodd

I think their first shot in the third period came after like 17 minutes, which is wild, wild work.

0

250.899 - 251.42 Thomas Drance

Dispiriting.

251.46 - 253.864 Jamie Dodd

Yeah. Really, really tough scenes in Montreal.

253.884 - 273.273 Thomas Drance

I liked Montreal fans. shouting out Dobesh with like six minutes to go. I feel like there's honestly, I hope Canucks fans are watching those Montreal playoff games, like finding a positive spin in a three, three, nothing game in which your team's like probably the last time you've played all season on home ice. Yeah. Given the way the series is gone. Very good chance.

275.235 - 287.393 Thomas Drance

Your team has given you nothing like Dua Lipa, like, come on, baby, give us nothing. Right. And yeah, they find just something positive to rally around, and then the team kind of responds.

287.413 - 310.635 Thomas Drance

Like, Dobesh shoots it down ice, and the Habs get their shot on goal, and the fans go wild, and the Dobie, Dobie chants ring out, and then the Canes hit the post with a shot, and the fans again chant Dobie, Dobie. Like, that's amazing, man. I honestly think, because you know how grim it would feel in Rogers Arena. Oh, yeah. In that situation. I think there's something...

Chapter 3: What impact does Linus Karlsson's performance have on the World Championships?

344.405 - 352.215 Jamie Dodd

Now, that doesn't mean there's no standards. There's still standards. You can still analyze. You can still criticize. You can still point to things they could have done better, but...

0

352.195 - 380.093 Jamie Dodd

even outside of the like positive negative binary our vibes and our way of approaching the team will change because they're changing and those changes some of those changes will be good some of those will be bad right but like it's going to be different it's going to be different and thank goodness yeah well I mean thank goodness no it's going to be different and well yeah I don't want to talk hypotheticals my point is though is like I fundamentally will change based on action

0

380.191 - 385.757 Thomas Drance

If I see smart moves beginning to be made, I'm going to be pretty excited. A hundred percent. And I'll get on board pretty quick.

0

385.777 - 405.979 Jamie Dodd

So Eric angles at 1230, we'll talk about the Carolina Montreal series and maybe just a bit of a retrospective on Montreal as well. What's next for them in the summer, Jason Buchla, who we could not fit on the show on our abbreviated show yesterday. He'll join us at one o'clock. Always a pleasure to chat with books. But before we do any of that, let's go to the whiteboard.

0

412.186 - 437.196 Jamie Dodd

It is your daily deep dive into what's up with the Canucks for today, May 28th. We'll start with the headline, which is still no news on the Canucks coaching front. And this text came in from Ramon, who says young Jamie, which first of all, thank you for calling me young. I don't know about that. You said you would be concerned if Manny wasn't hired by today. Still feel that way.

437.536 - 448.176 Jamie Dodd

I do think I said Thursday by the end of our show, so we've got almost two hours here still, which I don't think is going to happen. And I said by the time the combine starts.

448.196 - 467.819 Thomas Drance

Yeah, so like Tuesday. Yeah, although I think, yeah, I think Canucks staff's leaving midweek from my understanding. Okay. I would say, too, I don't think the twins are going. So I think there's at least some level of... If you're going to do your press conference, you'd want the GM there, not the twins. He's busy at the Combine, and we're all on the same page.

467.919 - 481.551 Thomas Drance

So the twins are introducing Manny Malhotra. Yeah. And Rian Johnson will be available to answer media questions on Zoom later. I don't think is a problem. Yeah, okay. That's the good thing about a three-headed dragon. You've got a lot of people to handle these things.

481.571 - 489.28 Jamie Dodd

You can be in multiple places at once. Among the many good things about three-headed dragons. They're awesome. So cool. Difficult to slay.

Chapter 4: Should Vancouver draft Viggo Björck or trade down?

590.66 - 606.702 Jamie Dodd

Again, we're a long way from that because... Talking today right now, I would absolutely bet that Manny Malhotra will be the next head coach. I would bet, you know, we're doing the show like Tuesday next week and we're talking about it, something like that. That would not surprise me in the least. That is the most likely outcome.

0

607.343 - 613.677 Jamie Dodd

If it doesn't happen, I'm going to have some serious questions about the foresight and the ability to read the lay of the land here.

0

614.298 - 634.221 Thomas Drance

Yeah, for sure. Let's hope we don't have to deal with them and we just get to go about the business of covering, you know, the Manny Malhotra era and a sort of Abbotsford succession plan plus that the Canucks have initiated. And then we can turn our focus to what's this team going to do, right?

0

634.242 - 640.609 Thomas Drance

Because that's the more interesting sort of conversation that we've kind of been delayed in having all offseason to this point.

0

640.859 - 645.145 Jamie Dodd

Yes. And, I mean, now we're what? We're what? We're barely a month. Just over a month.

645.505 - 646.767 Thomas Drance

Until the end of pre-agency. Yeah.

647.307 - 651.052 Jamie Dodd

And the draft, obviously, which is a key part of the trading time. Less than a month from the draft.

651.273 - 674.676 Thomas Drance

Yeah. The combine's next week. Like, to me, that's sort of... You would love to have this buttoned up before the combine. I agree. You know? I would think so. And you definitely, definitely, with a two, three... I mean, part of it, too, is... I'm just going to try and choose my words carefully here to make it less obvious the way things actually work. As free agents consider their options.

674.696 - 691.502 Thomas Drance

Yes, yes. Without any information. Yeah, in a vague way. It's nice for them to understand who your coach is. That's a big part of the recruiting pitch. Yep. That would be good. Yeah. Especially at the combine. Probably a lot of people gathered there. Well, not that you'd ever talk about.

Chapter 5: What are the arguments for staying put in the draft?

836.467 - 856.605 Thomas Drance

And do you know who's one and two? The 18-year-olds. That's pretty wild, actually. If Sweden wins this game against this Swiss team, I don't know. If you're a Canucks fan interested in the draft, I would... Highly recommend carving out some time to watch the latter 40 minutes of this game.

0

856.645 - 869.28 Jamie Dodd

All right, Dom has found the war room drop. Here we go. To do this as fast as possible, we've got to be very careful and go slow. Finding those guys with the predator eyes. Are there needs or areas of intrigue from a certain player type?

0

869.3 - 873.585 Thomas Drance

A de-thirst, it's real for San Jose. Vancouver Canucks are proud to select...

0

874.392 - 894.004 Jamie Dodd

All right. So I'm, I'm up here and I'm doing a bit of a different spin on this one, right? Rather than the, you know, the trade downs and move around the boards. It's a pretty simple question. And it's, let's say the draft goes chalk one and two, which I think this still qualifies as chalk McKenna one Stenberg two for sure. That qualifies as chalk.

0

895.182 - 913.392 Jamie Dodd

And when the Canucks are sitting there at number three and we've done a lot of, well, if you really like Malhotra trade down, or if you're kind of neutral on the D trade down, maybe you like really like Vigo Bjork trade down and get that extra S extra asset and take that player, you know, six or seven or whatever. It's also realistically, it's really hard to trade down. Absolutely.

913.412 - 936.765 Jamie Dodd

It's really hard. So with that in mind, if the Canucks are sitting there at three McKenna and Stenberg are off the board. Should they just forget about our maneuvering? We're trying to get that extra asset. Should they just go up and draft Viggo Bjork? Is that like, would it be unreasonable for them to just say, you know what? Screw it. We like this guy. He's awesome.

938.066 - 940.59 Jamie Dodd

Let's just go take who we think is the best player and it's Viggo Bjork.

941.251 - 972.701 Thomas Drance

No, I think that would be a very, very cool decision. I think there's a strong case for it. I need to dwell on it a little bit more. I think Vigo Bjork or Carson Carl's for me are the, let's just put this down the fairway 250 yards, right? Both of these guys have elite unicorn level ceiling. Both of them are very safe bets to be impact NHL players on an accelerated timeline.

974.083 - 1005.938 Thomas Drance

And the rebuild needs that. I think there's, arguments to be made in favor of Verhoff and I do think Caleb Mahotra where you're swinging for the ceiling with bigger bodies in particular in both cases and with Verhoff also for the right handed premium right I think Verhoff has the most upside Of anyone in this class who's not McKenna. Okay. Including Stenberg.

Chapter 6: How does player size impact NHL success?

1250.772 - 1272.105 Thomas Drance

That's bullish because you have to be so good to get those sorts of opportunities. Like if you look at the centers that have played at 17 in the SHL, they're all monsters. Like it's Marco Casper. It's Joel Erickson. It's Leo Carlson. It's like physical monsters, like beast monsters, six foot three, six foot two, huge people, six foot two guys.

0

1272.085 - 1295.022 Thomas Drance

Like it's really rare for a player Bjork size to get this sort of opportunity. And not only did he get this opportunity, but by the end of the year, he's playing 20 minutes a night. He's point per game in the playoffs. So, you know, I just, we've been talking about this guy as like an interesting value bet. And the more I look at it, the more I think on an age adjusted basis, his profile's more

0

1296.014 - 1320.024 Thomas Drance

prodigy more prodigal than that like it's more like this kid's a legit freak he's got the superhuman pops off the ice when you really examine the fossil record when you really look at like oh he's the best 16 year old scorer ever in the j20 and no one else is within 24 points of him like he's got the stuff that really pops i i I don't think there's a ceiling you can put on a profile like this.

0

1321.048 - 1326.207 Thomas Drance

He's the best Swedish center prospect this century.

0

1328.296 - 1349.516 Jamie Dodd

Now, on the size question, and I think your point about looking at it as an obstacle also that he has overcome to earn these opportunities is a good one. Tanbeer texts in, name me a 5'9 center in the NHL making a significant impact today. Now, I know your war against listed height. How would you say Braden Point's 5'11 listed height? I actually think he's listed 5'10".

1349.536 - 1351.68 Jamie Dodd

On DB, he's listed at 5'11".

1352.081 - 1365.627 Thomas Drance

Maybe it's been adjusted down. It's been adjusted down because it's not true. So Brain Point would be the name that stands out to me. And Sebastian Ajo. Sebastian Ajo's listed at 6', but is not. Yeah. And Nick Suzuki is listed at 5'11", and is not. Yeah. Um...

1365.775 - 1385.464 Jamie Dodd

So yeah, I mean, but the other, I'll give you three. The other point, the other point I would make though is, and I think back, this might be a sore spot for Canucks fans, but I think back to the Quinn Hughes draft, like you could have made an argument like, oh, you know, undersized left shot defenseman. Is he really worth the pick at that, at that point?

1386.405 - 1401.57 Jamie Dodd

I don't think people view defenseman in the same way anymore in part because the game has changed, right? So don't get stuck with, behind the curve because of these profiles right like be willing to swing on the guy who
