Chapter 1: What makes this episode a unique Canucks Talk experience?
.
What's up? Welcome to a very special, very bizarre edition of Canucks Talk here on Sportsnet 650. I'm Jamie Dodd, and yes... I am doing a Canucks Talk episode starting right as Canada kicks off its first ever World Cup game in Toronto against Bosnia.
So before I get to all the details of how today is going to work right off the bat, and I know, I can't believe I have to say this, but if you are listening live, I am going to be including score updates of the Canada game. So if you are trying to do the impossible, you got it PVR'd, you're trying to avoid the score, this is your warning today. to turn off the show. It's a sports radio program.
This is a massive, massive sporting event across the country. Now I'm not allowed to do play-by-play. FIFA would be very upset with me if I was doing that. But I am going to be updating you on the score and the state of play in the match. So expect updates, regular updates on Canada and Bosnia in Toronto as Canada opens up their World Cup. First time playing on home soil in the World Cup.
Chapter 2: What insights does Greg Wyshynski share about the Stanley Cup Finals?
Can they get their first win? We'll see. But as mentioned, we are doing Canucks talk here, so I'm going to talk about the Canucks. First of all, I want to mention we're broadcasting live from the mobile Kintec studio from AJ's Pizza on East Broadway. Step strong with orthotics and footwear from Kintec. Very, very excited to be here at AJ's. It is packed. People are rocking their Canada jerseys.
People are fired up. Any game, whether you want to come down and catch the second half of this one, If you're planning where you're going to be watching your other World Cup matches, your other Canada matches, AJ's is a fantastic option. I am three slices of pepperoni deep already. I see more in my future, and I'm very, very excited about it. 650-650 is the Dunbar-Lumber text line.
Send your thoughts in.
Chapter 3: How did Ryan Johnson's new hire impact the Canucks organization?
And, I mean, I want to say, first of all, if you are listening instead of watching the match, I salute you. Thank you for being a true Canucks toxic-o and turning in today. The show today also brought to you by Janpro. Tired of missed cleans or unreliable service? Jan Pro delivers consistent cleaning and responsive support you can count on. Only an hour show today, so we're on until 1. No drance, it's just me, so send your thoughts and texts in. We're going to do things a little differently than we normally do. I'm going to chat with Greg Wyshynski in just a couple of minutes here. And then we'll do the whiteboard in the second segment. And to peel back the curtain a little bit, I taped the interview with Wish earlier today.
Of course, Wish is on the ground covering the Stanley Cup final for ESPN. So we'll run that in a minute or two here. Now, it's worth noting off the top, and of course, I'll talk more about this in the whiteboard in the second segment, that the Canucks did make a little bit of news yesterday.
Chapter 4: What details are revealed about Richard Seeley's background?
Hiring Richard Seeley as the assistant general manager for the Canucks, also the GM of the Abbotsford Canucks. So really a direct replacement for Ryan Johnson and the work he was doing in the organization before he got bumped up to the top job. Again, more on Richard Seeley coming up in the whiteboard, but he's been the GM for the Ontario Reign. That's the Kings AHL affiliate.
for the past eight seasons. He was not an NHL AGM in that time. And remember, that's how the Canucks have things set up. That's how a lot of other teams have things set up where someone does both roles, an AGM, NGM of the AHL team. Whew, as Bosnia just skies one from the box. Dangerous off a set piece there. That's not play-by-play. It's just saying what happened. I didn't do it live.
I'm just saying they missed a chance.
FIFA relax don't worry still nil nil between Canada and Bosnia just a couple of minutes in so we'll talk more about Richard Seeley I've got a war room suggestion to get into and I'll take your text as well 650 650 is the Dunbar Lumber text line anything on your mind about the Canucks send it in and I'll try to get to it as the show goes on again we are live from AJ's Pizza
Chapter 5: What does the new AHL player signing mean for the Canucks?
on East Broadway. Packed house here to watch Canada and Bosnia. But right now, let's go to the Able Auctions hotline. Guests on Sportsnet 650 call in on the Able Auctions hotline. Email sales at ableauctions.ca to get your business assets sold and your building cleared. Let's hear from ESPN's Greg Wyshynski. Wysh, thanks for doing this. How are you?
I'm good, man. Making the old Raleigh to Vegas trek and getting ready for game six.
Now, did you leave your clothes in the hotel like John Tortorella did?
I'm still trying to figure out exactly the dynamics of leaving your clothes in the hotel. Do the Golden Knights just pay for a hotel the entire time and then just cancel it if needs be? Is he talking about leaving a suitcase at the front desk?
Chapter 6: How does the Canucks front office plan to handle player development?
Is he just going to keep his clothes in a dryer somewhere in the hotel? I wasn't sure about exactly the logistics of what Tortorella was suggesting, but I did appreciate the content. in being able to tell my editors that the coach at the Vegas Golden Knights guaranteed a game seven.
Yeah, some businessman is going to check in and be like, there's some nice suits in this hotel. Somebody left some really nice suits here. So it is 3-2 now going back to Vegas for game six. And, you know, for the first time in this series, the team wins two games in a row. That's Carolina to move within. a win of the Stanley cup final or of, of, of winning the Stanley cup.
I mean, first of all, wish just kind of big picture. It's been such a tremendous series. What has stood out to you both watching the games, but covering these two, two, two games throughout the series as well.
Well, I obviously in the early part of the series, it was the utter chaos of the comebacks and the, the wild swings and momentum. And I think, you know, the viewership tells you that people are taking notice of how chaotic the Stanley cup final was. And, and,
Chapter 7: What are the implications of Ryan Johnson's hiring strategy?
you know, it's easy to take, also take notice of some of the incredible performances. Jordan Stahl tying a Stanley Cup final record for the most consecutive games with a goal. Mitch Marner with the, you know, quickest natural hat trick we've ever seen in the final. Like, there's been some really incredible individual moments.
But, you know, you mentioned it, and as the series has kind of gone on, you're starting to see it normalize a little bit, which is bad news for Vegas, I think, because the normalization is the Carolina Hurricanes were the first team to hold their opponent to under three goals.
And Taylor Hall said it the other day, you know, the first team that's able to hold their opponent to two or one goal in a game is probably going to be the team that ends up winning the cup. And that ends up being Carolina in game five.
Yeah, and now they've got a great opportunity to bring home the Stanley Cup. You mentioned Jordan Stahl, and of course he's turned in really to probably the top story from a player perspective in this final. Scores again last night, just off to an incredible start in this series.
He's probably positioned himself to at least be a contender for the Conn Smythe Trophy if Carolina does eventually get this series done. It's been interesting as well to kind of hear his teammates talk about what a big game player he is. And, you know, it's been a while since we've seen Jordan Stahl in a Stanley Cup final right way back in his Pittsburgh days.
But it's pretty cool that he's getting a chance at his age to kind of remind everyone what he's capable of doing on this stage.

Chapter 8: How does the episode wrap up with listener engagement?
Yeah. And by that, you mean capable of doing on the offensive side. Cause I mean, you know, his, his defensive bona fides have always been there strangely, not in the Selkie voting, but, but overall, you know, the, the accolades he gets incredible face-off guy, incredible penalty killer. And now he's got this offensive contribution in the most important part of the playoffs for his team.
And I think it's really opened up people's eyes to the totality of his game. I mean, you could make, a consummate argument based on how well he's played against other teams, best players. But now you've got this offensive component too. It's an interesting race.
I, I spoke to a lot of people that have votes in the last couple of days who a good number of them are still on Marner, like win or lose. I was surprised by it. Cause I don't, I don't necessarily put Marner in the same category as McDavid a couple of years ago, or, you know, any of the goalies that have won Hextall, Jaguar, or even Pronger back in 06, who I thought was,
kind of dragged his team to the cup final. Like, I don't think Marner's necessarily on that level for me as far as like, you know, everybody's kind of hitched their wagons to the sky on the Golden Knights. But, I mean, there's no denying the numbers and there's no denying the performance. I just think if Carolina wins, there are some worthy candidates on the Hurricanes to win the MVP.
And I think that Stahl has obviously made the strongest case
Yeah, I think I'd be pretty surprised if Marner wins. I mean, unless he has, you know, another spectacular performance in a defeat here in one of the final two games and ends up just racking up a ton of points. But you got to do something pretty special to be the consmith winner on a losing team.
Elsewhere on Carolina, big part of the story last night, two goals for Svechnikov, a goal for Sebastian Ajo, which ends up being the game winner. And Their struggles to really get going and impact the game on a shift-to-shift basis have been a big storyline throughout the playoffs and into this Stanley Cup final for Carolina as well.
Did you see anything that made you think, okay, hey, they've arrived, and now they're going to be a force to be reckoned with for Vegas for the final one or two games of this series?
Not really, to be honest with you. I think... So there's one thing that Rob Brendamore did that was real genius and maybe the best coaching move of the playoffs, which is he... He moved Jordan Martinuk off of Stahl's line and put him with Ajo and Svechnikov.
