Just a programming note. We're only on the air for an hour tomorrow from one to two. So no crossover tomorrow.
Chapter 2: What are the latest updates on the Canucks' coaching search?
And I think we're moving Bukala to Thursday as well. So short show tomorrow. And that's why we did the crossover today. And as a result of that, and then a short week, you're on Friday. I'm on Friday. Oh, okay. I'm not on Friday. Yes.
Short week for me. And then short week for me next week. But I'll be in Buffalo. Correct. On Wednesday. So yeah, I'm off Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. Sounds good. Contain yourself.
Good for you. Brag. I mean, you're working though. Uh, I'm working on not Friday, I guess. Okay. Well, whatever. Yeah. We're at the ballpark. There goes my Friday. We're at the net.
Oh, sick. I'm actually sad that I'll miss that, which I love.
I love doing the show. Oh, the best. Uh, anyways, all that to say we're doing the whiteboard right now. Let's go to the whiteboard.
All right, fellas, let's focus up.
It is your daily deep dive into what's up with the Canucks for today, May 26th. And the headline is we'll give a mention to the coaching search here or the coaching process. Still no news as concerns the Canucks and negotiating with Manny Malhotra. As we heard from Rick Dollywall earlier today, they are negotiating. We all we've been over this.
I don't think we really need to belabor this part of the conversation other than checking in to say that there really hasn't been an update on man and Mahotra. We'll see. I would still bet we hear something by the end of this week, but we'll keep you posted if there is any news on that front.
I really think the other headline is Ivers Denver turning heads at the world championships and that highlight goal today is is kind of a punctuation mark on, or an exclamation point, on a very successful tournament and a very impressive tournament for him. And I know they're just getting into the knockout stages now.

Chapter 3: How is Ivar Stenberg performing at the World Championships?
Exactly. Yeah.
You've already talked yourself into this target, and you know there is an inherent amount of... It can't be optimal, though.
Like, I don't think teams are behaving... Like, the fact that we haven't seen a team... We see it all the time in the NFL. Yeah. and the NBA. Yeah. If, if the fact that we haven't seen a trade involving the top, a top five picks since Oh eight to me reeks of like classic NHL, low risk inefficiency. Um, what's the, what's the effect? Where you prize what you have.
Oh, endowment effect, I believe. Endowment effect. Speaking of San Jose needing D. The endowment effect.
Like, it smells like one of those things. Yeah. To me. Where teams are just too low risk about this sort of thing. I think that's right.
There's no way this is optimal. Because the risk is... It's largely, like, optical. Not largely, but... Mostly. We know how... I don't want to say cynical, but this is an undercurrent to everything the general managers do, right? It's like, how does this position me to survive in my job? Right. Even if they're not thinking of it that way, that's kind of unavoidable.
Yes.
And how often does that play into coaching decisions?
Yes.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of Toronto and San Jose's draft strategies?
65 this year, yeah. And so people will look back on that and say, oh, that's not that bad a draft pick. It's like, well, it kind of is. Like, it's bad for New Jersey. Yeah, it didn't work out for the Devils. You know, increasingly, you have to consider, like... Gustav Forsling in the fifth round is not a good draft pick if you don't get the value of him becoming a good player, right?
Like you basically have to hit before you're waiver eligible. You know, there's no bonus points are awarded for developing a Jalen Chatfield for another team's benefit or Pontus Holmberg or what have you, right? Like you have to mind the benefit of the draft pick for it to be a good draft pick. So hitting quickly is valuable the way that I think Stenberg for sure will.
I just don't know... Like, the Canucks can't afford... They should be moving back and picking up assets. I don't think they can afford to be moving up.
Yeah, that would be the way I would be going as well. I mean, the only... Someone texted in, what about trading up to one? I just don't think that's realistic. And I'm sure... And I think the cost would be prohibitive.
The only way it makes sense is if you're able to move about the board using player personnel assets, not draft picks or futures. If you were able to move from third to second for a contract... you know, then, then I think it's worthwhile, but like, I don't think you're trading three and Philip Heronic for two. No, you're definitely not. No.
You can get more for Philip Roenick if you're trading Philip Roenick.
Yeah. Have you noticed Islanders, New York Islanders fans have done a lot of 13th overall for Philip Roenick. And it's like, guys, you're not getting Philip Roenick for half the price of Rasmus Anderson, a player he's better than and who's expiring. Yeah. Start at Rasmus Anderson and throw an additional premium asset into the package. And then you'll have a sense of what the market value is.
Who's the best defenseman on the market? I guess Rasmus Anderson, but he's going to stay in Vegas. But like, other than that, who is the best defenseman who's going to be available? I mean, Radish, but that has some question marks attached to it. I would think it's fair.
Do you want me to tell you who I think is going to be the highest paid defenseman? I think it's going to be John Carlson.

Chapter 5: Why might Vancouver and San Jose be trade-down candidates?
Guys with the predator eyes. Their needs or areas of intrigue from a certain player type.
A de-thirst. It's real for San Jose. Vancouver Canucks are proud to select.
Oh, fantastic. Okay, it's my turn. And this one is not... like put all the detox out of your mind because this one is not sexy at all but in the theme of trading down what trading down for more assets okay okay trading down for more assets yeah so pick 24 to Chicago
for pick 45 this year which is the new york islanders second okay and the canucks own second round boo okay so i get chicago's 2027 no no no vancouver's 2027 vancouver 2027 second and pick 45 this year but you're giving up a first round pick and i give up pick 45 no no no or 20 24 24 yeah so you sending out 24 this year getting 45 this year and your own second back next season for 2027
So I really think this comes down to how bad do you think you're going to be next year? This is the rare opportunity. We always talk about betting against other teams. I think that team's going to be bad. You're like, I think we're going to be bad. And that's why I want that pick back.
I would do this on the clock.
Depending on who's there.
I wouldn't do it in advance of the draft. I would only do it on the clock. This is interesting unless Ryan Lynn or... I really highly value the offer sheet route. I think it's a because that's the other angle here. I think it's a really profitable. Yeah. So the Canucks are exempt from making certain types of offers sheets unless they get their second round pick back.
But the offer sheet tears that they can make this season are like pretty lucrative. Like you can pay real amounts of money now while only sacrificing like some. So the 2.3 to 4.75 for a second round pick. Yeah. So a $4.7 million offer, that's a pretty interesting way to go about adding a good player. And there's some interesting players to steal or try to steal this year. The Devils have some.
