Talk a little sees what to expect from the team this year. I want to talk to him about the changes at Nat Bailey this season as well. And then, as you may have noticed, there's a lot else going on in the world of Vancouver sports these days, including some potentially very dire news about the Vancouver Whitecaps.

176.551 - 201.176 Jamie Dodd

So Randy, but I can get into that at different points in the second hour of the show as well. As always, when I'm starting the show solo, the texts are appreciated. 650-650 is the Dunbar Lumber text line. So, Randeep's going to join me at 1230 for the rest of the show. Or at 1130, I should say. Batch will chat with us at noon. Tyler Zickel at 1230. But right now, let's go to the whiteboard.

Chapter 2: How is Connor McDavid's future with the Oilers affected by recent playoff performance?

237.361 - 261.249 Jamie Dodd

beating the Edmonton Oilers in game six in Anaheim to take that series against the heavily favored Edmonton Oilers. And the phrase that you're already seeing will come up a lot here is, is this a changing of the guard in the Pacific Division? Might be a little early for that. Anaheim is still a very flawed team. Edmonton with McDavid and Dreisaitl in the fold.

0

262.01 - 282.053 Jamie Dodd

You know they're going to come back at some point in the next couple of years. But if it isn't already a changing of the guard, it's definitely, you can see that coming. You can see that coming down the road in the not-too-distant future if it hasn't happened already. And I think this is fascinating both from an Oilers and an Anaheim Ducks perspective. And I want to start with the Oilers.

0

282.093 - 283.635 Jamie Dodd

And look, obviously, as we all know,

0

285.033 - 306.104 Jamie Dodd

As soon as Connor McDavid signed that short-term extension, two-year deal to stay with the team, and not taking a raise to do it, to be fair, but only a two-year extension, you knew the Edmonton Oilers were under immense, immense pressure to put together an even better team than the versions of the team that have gone to the Stanley Cup Finals and lost two years in a row.

0

306.945 - 327.056 Jamie Dodd

Now you lose in the first round, and look, you can point to injuries as part of that. I mean, watching the game last night in a situation where the Oilers... needed to push in the third period to keep their season alive. How many times have we seen Connor McDavid go all-world, superstar, supernova in that situation? He just didn't have it in the tank last night.

327.456 - 344.458 Jamie Dodd

It was shocking, actually, how kind of peripheral to the action Connor McDavid was in those circumstances because we all know how he can take over a game. So, yeah, you've got to chalk some of it up to injuries. But we also all know, and as Connor McDavid said post-game, this wasn't a particularly impressive team at any point this season.

344.979 - 361.277 Jamie Dodd

We've gotten so used to the slow starts from the Edmonton Oilers, and then they turn it on, and then they're the best team in the league for a couple of months, and then all of a sudden they finish with, you know, 105 points, and they look good going into the playoffs. That didn't happen this year. They never had that stretch where they looked like absolute world beaters.

361.713 - 370.786 Jamie Dodd

And now as a result of this loss, they are in a very, very dangerous spot here. And there's a couple of things going on. One, of course, is the mismanagement.

371.768 - 388.733 Unknown

And I think there's a good chance that we look back on the Stuart Skinner for Tristan Jari deal and Stuart Skinner for Brett Kulak. Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak for Tristan Jari. And we look at that taking on the full freight of Tristan Jari's deal, which has two more years on it.

Chapter 3: What are the implications of the Oilers' goaltending situation for next season?

404.258 - 425.466 Jamie Dodd

That alone is a fireable offense for the Edmonton Oilers GM, Stan Bowman, in my eyes. I don't know how you can expect Connor McDavid – to have the full faith and confidence that you want him to have in your management when Stan Bowman has that decision on his resume, on his very recent resume.

0

425.566 - 445.838 Jamie Dodd

Even if he was making a lot of other really smart, savvy moves, which I don't necessarily think that he is, that move was so bad and so poorly thought out and so damaging for the future that if you just rode with Stuart Skinner and let his contract expire... And instead you're taking on extra money and extra years of commitment for a worse goalie in Tristan Jari that you can't even trust to play.

0

447.505 - 468.872 Jamie Dodd

I don't know how you expect to move forward. with Stan Bowman as the GM. I don't know how you can expect Connor McDavid to buy into that plan with Stan Bowman as the GM. So as it has been for years now, the number one question that a lot of people are asking about the Oilers going into the offseason is how do you fix the goaltending position? What do you do? What are your options there?

0

469.293 - 488.608 Jamie Dodd

And I'm sure we're going to get texts in, would they be interested in Thatcher Demko? Not right now. If he plays a bunch of games before the trade deadline and looks good, you never know. They might be desperate, but they're not taking on, even they, even the Edmonton Oilers are not desperate enough to take a swing on Thatcher Demko right now until they see how his body holds up next season.

0

490.21 - 514.756 Jamie Dodd

But I think the goaltending, I mean, it's an important thing. I don't want to downplay the significance of the goaltending. They need to figure it out, and it's been a disaster for them so far. But they need more up and down the roster. And I think the question is, how do they add real, legitimate needle movers to that team? Not just guys that look good next to McDavid and Dreisaitl.

515.397 - 531.681 Jamie Dodd

And again, you know, we've talked about the Vasily Podkolzin story, and he's been a great fit. There's no doubt about it. But it's not as if if you move him away from Dreisaitl that you're expecting significant production. You know, the best line for them in that series was Dreisaitl with Podkolzin and Kasperi Kapanen.

532.64 - 543.095 Jamie Dodd

Again, Pod Colson and Kasperi Kapanen are products of playing with Leon Dreisaitl. That's not the challenge. The challenge isn't to find somebody who can be a running mate for Leon Dreisaitl or Connor McDavid.

543.415 - 558.356 Jamie Dodd

The challenge is to find players who can be productive away from them, who can help you in those non-McDavid and Dreisaitl minutes, who can give you legitimate second and third options if you do decide to load up McDavid and Dreisaitl. That's been the consistent struggle.

Chapter 4: What lessons can the Canucks learn from the Ducks' rebuilding success?

558.376 - 572.979 Jamie Dodd

It's one thing to find a guy who looks good playing with one of the two or three best players in the world. And I'm not even trying to slam Kapanen and Pod Kolzin, right? Not everyone can do that. Not everyone can look good in that situation. There's value in that. But the Oilers, their search for talent, it has to go beyond that.

0

572.999 - 597.904 Jamie Dodd

They need to find guys who can stand on their own as difference-making players. Not superstars, right, but just guys who can do something, guys who can produce away from their top-end talent. Because the other thing here is it's not just talent. There's also a big age factor. So the three best players on the Oilers, right, obviously McDavid, Dreisaitl, and Evan Bouchard.

0

597.944 - 617.093 Jamie Dodd

And I'm not worried about them, any of their production. And I think Evan Bouchard even has become pretty underrated, actually, as a player, considering what he's able to do offensively for that team. So their top three are McDavid, Dreisaitl, and Bouchard. Their next three best players, and again, I don't think this is controversial, Matthias Ekholm, Zach Hyman, and Ryan Nugent Hopkins.

0

617.173 - 637.842 Jamie Dodd

That's the second layer behind their absolute stars at the top. Well, at the start of next year, those three guys, Ekholm, Hyman, and the Nuge, are going to be 36, 34, and 33. That doesn't mean they're instantly going to drop off and become replacement-level players or anything like that, but you have to at least be planning for it.

0

638.143 - 660.302 Jamie Dodd

You have to at least be aware of that risk, and that means if you're looking at these next two years where they have Connor McDavid under contract, you don't just have to add talent from the baseline you're at right now, you also have to compensate for any age-related decline that you get from those next three key players on your team. And I think Matthias Ekholm is the big one here.

660.485 - 681.948 Jamie Dodd

Really, when they acquired him from Nashville, that was the start of them being legitimate contenders. He was instantly a perfect fitness to Evan Bouchard. When they have Ekholm, Bouchard, and either one of McDavid or Dreisaitl or both of them on the ice, they are a phenomenal team. And I think Ekholm gets slapped on that. He's definitely the most underrated player on the Oilers.

682.048 - 701.71 Jamie Dodd

I think he's honestly one of the most underrated players in the league at this point. Because it's easy to look at him and say, oh yeah, he's just out there kind of caddying for those guys. His physicality, defensive awareness, all of that plays a huge role in allowing that group to do what they're able to do. He's going to be 36 in a couple of weeks.

Chapter 5: Who are the leading candidates in the Canucks' GM search?

701.73 - 726.068 Jamie Dodd

And again, look, he's a physical monster. He's huge. We've seen big defensemen, big rough and tumble, durable defensemen like that. They can remain effective well into their 30s. So it's possible he keeps going at the level he's been at. He had another 40-point year as a non-power play guy this season. But even like a 10% decline from a player like Matias Ekholm, that starts to be a big deal.

0

726.669 - 749.841 Jamie Dodd

That's one of your best players, one of your key guys that makes your team tick. If he starts to lose even a little bit of his effectiveness, that's a major problem for the Edmonton Oilers. And they are so asset poor, having traded draft picks, their prospect pool is obviously uninspiring. You don't just need to bring in guys around the margins. You need to find home runs.

0

750.192 - 768.538 Jamie Dodd

and you might need to find home runs that can replace really key players or at least compensate for the decline of really key players like Ekholm, Hyman, and Nugent Hopkins. That's going to be a very, very tall order. Nothing I have seen from Stan Bowman gives me any confidence that he's up to that challenge.

0

770.527 - 792.595 Jamie Dodd

And if I was an Oilers fan, I would be desperately hoping that they're going to be the latest team joining in the general manager search. Basketball Phil says they need to trade Nurse. That would go a long way. It would certainly open up some cap space for them to be able to do it. The question is, what are you giving a team? Because even in this era of, you know, the cap's going up.

0

792.655 - 816.899 Jamie Dodd

It's way easier to move deals. Darnell Nurse. with what four more seasons after this one at 31 at 9.25 man that's a tough ticket and considering the effectiveness that we see from him now a rebuilding team like the canucks if you're getting paid enough to take that deal sure you're interested But does Edmonton have the assets?

817.279 - 838.502 Jamie Dodd

Does Edmonton have anything that could entice you to take on Darnell Nurse's contract? I'm not sure that they do. I don't know what they're offering up to any team, let alone the Canucks, to really move the needle on that one and get them to bite the bullet. That's been the issue for a long time, or one of the issues, that they need to move Nurse. And even with the cap going up.

Chapter 6: What questions are being asked during the Canucks' GM interviews?

839.495 - 859.058 Jamie Dodd

I don't know how they're going to be able to do that. So that's the Edmonton Oilers side. And the other side, of course, is the Ducks. Good news story if you're following a rebuilding team in some ways like the Vancouver Canucks. And the question obviously is when you see a rebuilding team start to have a little bit of success like this, like the Anaheim Ducks are, right?

0

859.158 - 877.213 Jamie Dodd

What can the Canucks learn from the Ducks? And it's easy to look at it and get, you know, I think we sometimes get too bogged down in timelines, right? Like, oh, Buffalo took this long. Detroit's taking this long. You know, Anaheim, they picked top ten in seven drafts in a row. And that's true. That started with Trevor Zegers at nine in 2019.

0

877.598 - 891.703 Jamie Dodd

But I'm thinking you look at it, you can really look at the Ducks rebuild in kind of two phases. And the first was the false start phase, right? They drafted Zegras, Jamie Drysdale, and Mason McTavish in three consecutive drafts. And if you're a Ducks fan after those three drafts, you're thinking, man, this is incredible.

0

892.304 - 909.572 Jamie Dodd

Number one center in Mason McTavish, dynamic power play guy in Jamie Drysdale, superstar offensive player in Trevor Zegras. That's supposed to be the new core. And, of course, it never works out like that. None of the players really live up to their potential. Zegers is eventually traded. Drysdale's traded in a great deal for them. That kind of fell into their laps.

0

909.632 - 930.32 Jamie Dodd

McAvish, now we're hearing, potentially on the trade block, playing way farther down the roster. So that's kind of the false start era. Then in 2023 and 2024, they draft Leo Carlson and Beckett Seneca. And that's really when things change for the Ducks. And I'm not saying that's the only two good moves they've made, right? There's a lot of other good things going on.

930.34 - 938.531 Jamie Dodd

I mean, you look at drafting Jackson Lacombe in the second round back in 2019 and his eventual emergence into the absolute superstar that he is today.

Chapter 7: How does age factor into the Oilers' roster decisions moving forward?

939.072 - 953.446 Jamie Dodd

That's a home run. That's an incredible pick. Drysdale for Gauthier, right? Falls into your lap, but you take advantage. You have the young asset necessary to get the deal done. Home run. So they've done other good things other than drafting Leo Carlson and Beckett Seneca.

0

954.668 - 974.798 Jamie Dodd

But if they don't crush those two high picks, if they don't hit home runs there, I don't think even all of those other good moves, let alone, you know, adding guys like Killorn and Truba and John Carlson, If you don't find your absolute studs at the top of the draft, I'm not sure what much else that you're doing in the rebuild is going to matter.

0

974.818 - 992.464 Jamie Dodd

And I think that's the lesson, ultimately, from the Anaheim Ducks. And you could apply this lesson to obviously what we've seen with Macklin Celebrini in San Jose. You could apply it, even though it's not really a traditional rebuild, to Matthew Schaefer with the Islanders. I think you could apply it in a negative sense to the LA Kings. Right.

0

992.504 - 1006.222 Jamie Dodd

If Quentin Byfield had come in and been like Leo Carlson this year and ever had that type of season, we're probably looking at the Kings rebuild in a very, very different light. So, again, it's not that, you know, it took them seven years to amass all this talent.

0

1007.303 - 1025.576 Jamie Dodd

And now it's all coming to fruition because a lot like really Jackson Lacombe is the only guy who's really contributing from those early part of the rebuild drafts. The real lesson is that nothing they did really mattered until they found their guys, as my co-host Trance would say, their capital D dudes at the top of the draft.

1026.336 - 1044.073 Jamie Dodd

And once you do that, and if you do that, things can change really, really fast. And look, it's fair to say there's a huge amount of luck, right? You got to get the lottery balls in your favor. It has to be in the right draft where these types of players are available. But you have to be sharp, too. Beckett Seneca, man, that was a reach.

1044.627 - 1064.543 Jamie Dodd

A clear cut, no doubt about it, reach at three for the Ducks. But they stuck to their guns, and that looks like an incredible pick now. I love that player. And he is going to be really, really good in this league for a long time to come. So I think if you're looking at the Ducks, it's not about, oh, it took this many years, and then they finally won a playoff series.

1066.008 - 1075.46 Jamie Dodd

It's about the importance of nailing those picks at the top of the draft and bringing in the true elite talent that can really change the trajectory of your franchise.

Chapter 8: What strategies should the Oilers consider to improve their roster?

1075.48 - 1095.306 Jamie Dodd

Before I get into the broadsheet and the latest on the GM search, I just want to mention this as well in the headlines. Philip Roenick and Nils Hoaglander both injured in IIHF exhibition games yesterday. Now, the word from Rick Dollywall, who's been burning up the phones to Europe, I hope he's got a good cell plan, can handle all those minutes making calls to Yuri Slager over in Europe.

0

1095.978 - 1111.304 Jamie Dodd

Word from Rick Dollywall is that both should be okay, but he is awaiting an update on Filipronic tomorrow. Weird play on Filipronic. I'm not sure what the Finnish player's name is, but kind of driving, trying to drive his head into the ice, but didn't really, but still looked kind of awkward and painful for Filipronic.

0

1111.324 - 1135.296 Jamie Dodd

So hopefully both guys are going to be okay, and we'll get some more confirmation of that in the coming days. All right, to the broadsheet, and of course, the latest on The Canucks GM search, which is ongoing. I want to mention reporting from Satyar Shah on Canucks Central yesterday, noting that Bruins AGM Evan Gold and Panthers AGM Brett Peterson are still in the mix as legitimate candidates.

0

1135.336 - 1150.579 Jamie Dodd

And that was kind of responding to some of what Nick Kiprios had to say, suggesting that You know, is this all just kind of for show and they're going to end up with Ryan Johnson eventually anyways? And look, they still could end up with Ryan Johnson. We'll talk more about that in a second. But as Sat said, he doesn't think that's the case.

0

1150.599 - 1170.794 Jamie Dodd

He thinks these are real legitimate candidates that are under consideration. Elliott Friedman in 32 thoughts today with a lot of information about where this search stands right now. So here's some of what he had to say. Patrick Burke. Ray Whitney, Ryan Martin, they're all out. They have been told thanks, but no thanks.

1170.814 - 1191.797 Jamie Dodd

So that's at least three candidates that Elliott Friedman can report are no longer in the running. Says he's hearing positive things about Shane Doan and Evan Gold. And the longer this goes, and we continue to hear this drumbeat of Shane Doan has been impressive, right? And Rick Dollywall has reported this. I think Drance has heard similar things. Elliott Friedman now as well.

1193.212 - 1209.029 Jamie Dodd

At this point, I'm starting to feel that it's pretty likely that Shane Doan is going to end up in this mix in some capacity, especially since everything we've heard is that it wouldn't be the GM role. It would be a title along the lines of Director of Hockey Operations, VP of Hockey Operations, something like that.

1209.469 - 1231.961 Jamie Dodd

More maybe of a public-facing senior role as opposed to the guy doing the day-to-day grind of being the GM. And I don't know how many other candidates they're interviewing that really fit that mold or check that box. So if they're really impressed with Shane Doan, again, nothing's done until it's done, as Frege likes to say, and we'll see where this goes.

1232.041 - 1247.181 Jamie Dodd

But it's starting to feel like there's a decent chance, at least in my eyes, that Shane Doan ends up as part of this. I think it's interesting that Freedman is hearing that Evan Doan has impressed as well. Now, Freedman said, look, it's not as if they haven't necessarily officially made their short list, and here it is, and these are the only guys we're going to talk to again.
