Chapter 2: How is Jim Rutherford influencing the Canucks' general manager search?
Oh, you know, fighting with Toronto Maple Leafs fans on Twitter. Well, it's like you're branching out from fighting with Canucks fans on Twitter. You're going coast to coast.
Yeah, and then I like that they all do this thing that's like, Drance hates the Leafs. And it's like, tell that to Canucks fans. Please, do me a favor. Classic Vancouver media ripping the Leafs. I also had a good one where a guy was like, having read your work over the years, you seem to trend pessimistic in your analysis. And I'm like, listen...
Listen, I don't know if you've followed the last few years of Vancouver Canucks history, but I think if I'm trending pessimistic in my analysis of your team, you can either say, wow, that guy's real negative. Or you can listen. I don't know. Yeah. I don't know. I feel like my track record of picking out Ducks, Mammoth versus Canucks-like trajectories.
Chapter 3: Who are the leading candidates for the Canucks GM position?
Yeah, I mean, I don't know what to tell you. But yeah, scary times for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hopefully we don't have similar conversations. Hopefully I don't trend pessimistic when we end up covering the next Vancouver Canucks general manager. And to be honest, I'm actually pretty confident we won't.
Yeah, well, I mean, watching the Leafs search from afar has been fantastic, really. Like, I mean, everything you could hope for. Yeah. From somebody who enjoys laughing. Not to mention... From somebody who enjoys laughing at the Leafs.
Not to mention whatever's happening in Nashville.
Yeah, that's a fascinating one. I mean, they've been, they're what? More than two months into this process. Like three almost.
Chapter 4: What role does experience play in the Canucks' GM hiring process?
To be totally honest with you, I mean, in terms of processes that look and feel... comfortably NHL, right? Like comfortably normal. You know, I think the amount of news getting out about them is pretty quiet.
Like I thought it was telling, and we can get into this with Dolly, like I thought it was telling that today there was a few more drips and drabs about the process, but it felt like it was... probably coming from the league office, right? And like, you know, not from the Canucks. The team itself seems to be keeping a lid on this, which is, you know, impressive.
So anyway, let's get into it with our guys, our favorites.
Yeah, Dom is off the phone. He's giving me the thumbs up. So we're going to try this here. It is Wednesday, which means it's time for the crossover with Don Taylor and Rick Dollywall. They're the co-hosts of Donnie and Dolly on Check TV. Monday to Friday, 10 to noon.
Chapter 5: How do the Canucks' hiring strategies compare to other teams?
They join us every Wednesday for the crossover brought to you by Passant Motors. It's spring cleaning season at Passant Motors. Get special low interest rates from 4.99% plus instant auto loan approvals and more. More info at PassantMotors.com. How's it going, fellas?
Good, very good. Two days in a row for me.
Yeah. I mean, it's a thrill for us.
I don't love the fact I was on there yesterday, the subject matter.
Yeah, absolutely.
Being with you guys is always fun.
Well, we always appreciate it, Donnie, and especially when you do step in in those circumstances. And, Rick, we always appreciate you as well. I love the crossover.

Chapter 6: What are the implications of the upcoming NHL draft for the Canucks?
I look forward to it every week. Especially today.
Don't all rush to agree with me, guys. Don't worry. It's all right. We love the crossover, Jamie. We love the crossover, but we're especially happy to chat with Rick today because he dropped a lot of good intel this morning that I'm curious to rehash with him, add to, get into. Rick, the Canucks general manager search, you had some awesome stuff on Donnie and Dolly earlier today.
Can you rehash some of the key points for our listeners?
Well, first, I just want to say they interviewed Patrick Burke, and Thomas, you know him, Brian Burke's son. I do, yeah. Seven years scout with the Flyers at the NHL's Department of Safety. You talk to people around the NHL, and boy, oh boy, Burke is well thought of, sharp guy, good eye for talent. Brian Burke's son, this would have been a candidate on Jim Rutherford's list.
This would not have been a candidate on Aquilini or Doyle's list.

Chapter 7: How are U-18 World Championship players being evaluated for the draft?
Jim knows talent. And by the way, they interviewed not one or two people at the NHL office. I mean, they, you know, Ray Whitney's right there too. And I haven't nailed down any other names, but I'm pretty sure they didn't stop at Whitney and him. Burke is an up-and-coming guy. Won't be surprised if he gets a GM's job soon.
Sources do tell me, Thomas, that the Canucks have started telling candidates they're not advancing to the next stage. It would not be surprising if the shortlist has guys with experience at the executive level, either AGM or GM. Just my gut feeling, but I think rookie guys like Whitney and Burke, I think those guys are going to have a tough time advancing to the next stage.
Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people, like I told you guys last week, Shane Doan is so well thought of in the NHL. It would not surprise me if he makes the Canucks shortlist. But it's time now, guys. When's the draft lotteries around the corner?
Six days.
We got the most important draft in franchise history coming up.

Chapter 8: What can the Canucks learn from the Florida Panthers' recent successes?
It's time now to whittle this down and find the guys.
So let me jump in here, Rick. So Patrick Burke, you mentioned that I know him. I interviewed him years ago, early in my career, as part of his You Can Play initiative, which obviously was enormously impactful within the league.
This is a guy who was working as a pro scout for seven years for the Philadelphia Flyers organization while going to law school, while running a not-for-profit organization that was probably the most significant gay rights organization movement that pro sports has seen in 25 years.
Um, you know, he doesn't have a lot of experience in terms of on the team side, uh, outside of being a pro scout, but he has a lot of experience in terms of being an administrator at the NHL and administrator at the NHL. And obviously having been like a CEO PR front facing guy running sort of, you can play to me, right.
Um,
Maybe this was probably a stretch interview for a guy like Patrick Burke, but I like the name as something we should keep in mind. Like if this guy goes and gets an assistant general manager job, something like that around the NHL, like two, three years from now, I think he could be a really compelling candidate for an opportunity like the one that he reportedly interviewed for in Vancouver.
And I can actually confirm that he did.
um interview for the job in vancouver um yeah by the way i'm saying all this and i'm like typically the guy who like i'm not a huge brian burke fan you know in terms of uh obviously a ton of respect for his work rebuilding the canucks but it's like i'm not a knee jerk like wow brian burke like you know i'm not a huge brian burke fan but i i think patrick burke's a really impressive individual for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with his last name um or the fact that if you hear him talk
What do you got against Burke? Well, you know, Donnie, I only have place in my heart for one guy who peaked in 2008 and I save it for you.
