Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the International Casualty and Life Insurance Company, Hartford, Connecticut. following as an account of expenses incurred during my investigation of the Harried Heiress matter. Expense account item 1485 for a tank full of gas, and I drove to the Everly address at the edge of Pawnee Woods. That was a beautiful old place in a setting of tall oaks and sycamore trees that spread protectively over and around the rather large frame house, with its slate roof, its cupolas and dormers and broad porches. Even before going in, I knew the inside was filled with heavy, overstuffed furniture and velvet draperies, gilded mirrors. That it had a kind of musty smell, perhaps a trace of camphor.
And the parlor closed off except for very special occasions. It was, well, it was that kind of place. In answer to my knock, I was met at the door by a man who looked anything but on his last legs. Mr. Dollar? Yeah, that's right. Good. Good. Come in, please. Ah, thanks, but are you Mr... I'm Dr. Thatcher. I'm the one who called you and should... Oh, oh, I see.
At Mr. Everly's request, or I should say at his insistence. Come along, please. He's in his bedroom upstairs.
