It's Wednesday the 23rd of September and this is the morning edition of the Comsec Market Update.
James Tao 0:31
Yeah, so there was uh a renewed rally in chipmakers and other AI-related stocks. That certainly helped lift the Nasdaq index to fresh all-time highs, another closing high as well for the tech heavy index. Uh overall, it was a fairly mixed session on US markets, James, as uh investors, you know, also keeping an eye out on diplomacy developments uh between the US and Iran. We did hear a speech by Uh President Trump at the UN General Assembly.

How are US‑Iran diplomatic talks influencing oil prices below $100 a barrel?

James Tao 1:00
He did mention the fact that the US could, in quotes, annihilate the Islamic Republic if no peace deal was reached, but also predicted that his administration could also strike a deal with Iran after the US midterm elections happening in November. So Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly also did mention that US and Iranian officials had. Held a three hour meeting, so there's certainly plenty going on uh in that particular part of the world. Uh US President also will be hosting a summit later this week with Chinese President Xi, and they're likely to discuss, you know, all things US China relations, um things like AI, rare earths, tariffs and trade as well.
James Gruber 1:42
Yeah, so there was another factor at play overnight, and that was AI stocks being helped by the strong interest in Meta Platform's new AI assistant. So reportedly, this assistant can do emails and complete transactions on behalf of users, like booking holidays, and making it easier for consumers to switch between service providers. So companies within banking and insurance, telcos, and travel. booking sites, they all fell as a result of this new AI assistant being launched.
James Tao 2:13
Yeah, no, having a look at how the Aussie market performed yesterday as well. A quick look there. We had the ASX two hundred yesterday finishing slightly higher, uh, adding about twenty-six points, or roughly uh point three of one percent to eight thousand seven hundred and fifty-eight. Uh the consumer discretionaries, the IT sectors saw some of the biggest gains.

What caused the ASX to open modestly higher and which sectors led the gain?

James Tao 2:33
Uh the local tech sector really tracking the US tech heavy NASDAQ uh higher. Meanwhile, we saw uh energy and utilities uh really finishing in the red. The only sectors on our market to finish in the red certainly weighed down by the recent declines that we've seen uh in oil prices this morning. The uh Aussie share market is set to open higher again. Index futures are up around 0.3 of a percent. Probably a similar story to yesterday. Tech stocks uh could certainly benefit again from that rally that we've seen uh in the Nasdaq. back just recently, while energy shares could also face a bit of a tougher time uh again with those lower crude prices. Now let's move to commodities. James, what's the latest there?
James Tao 3:14
We've talked about oil. Can you give us a little bit more about what's happening?

Which commodities fell or rose after the oil dip and what drove those moves?

James Gruber 3:17
Yeah, so there was not only those diplomatic efforts to end the Iran war, but also there's evidence of increasing flows of Saudi crude with the restart of the East-West pipeline and ship movements through the Strait of Homoose, and that led to Brent crude futures settling 0.9% lower at U99.46 US dollars a barrel, so under that $100 mark, as you mentioned. Base metal prices were Were higher, copper futures rose for a sixth straight session up more than 1%, as top metals consumer China stocked up ahead of its holiday season. Meanwhile, aluminium futures gained 1.4%. In a note, CBA economists said that increases in Chinese and uranium aluminium output won't be enough to pull the global market out of deficit this year.
James Gruber 4:06
Meantime, gold futures edged lower as markets factored in a more restrictive US monetary policy this year. While traders also kept a close eye on the Middle East conflict and its developments, the futures settled down 0.2% at $4,376 US dollars an ounce.
