John Elliott Bascomb is a well-known and dangerous assailant. Deputy George Keaton dozes snoring in the anteroom connecting the jail and the sheriff's office at the end of a long uneventful night's duty. When Sheriff Grissel returned to his office at 8 p.m., he discovered the bodies of his night deputy and the courthouse janitor.
