And what we're going to do this time is I'm going to show you a talk I did from the Global Leadership Summit. What is the GLS? It's probably the biggest leadership event in the world. And since 2018, I've been honored to give the opening talk as what's called the champion or kind of like the spokesperson. This is not a paid ad. This is just something I believe in, and I do.
The summit takes place on the first week of August, on the first Thursday and Friday. If you want more information, you can go to the leader guide. This year, we've got Jim Collins, Arthur Brooks, Ryan Leak, Vanessa Van Edwards, John Acuff, Andy Stanley, and more. I'll be doing the opening talk this year on something I'm really passionate about. I'm going to show you last year's talk. I talked about Boring. Leadership is often boring, but I'm talking about how do you bore your way to success? Often greatness is found in doing the same things over and over again. So I pray that this talk speaks to you and encourages you. It's okay to be boring. In fact, it might even be great to be boring. What if I told you that what you think makes a leader great is probably wrong?
Probably not the best way to start a leadership conference. Or is it? You see, I've discovered that most people have a glamorized view of what makes a world-class leader.
What is the Global Leadership Summit and why is this talk being shared?
Most people tend to think about great and lasting leadership. They tend to envision an extraordinary combination of courage and charisma and conviction and influence and impact and inspiration. Most people imagine some version, you probably think of someone standing up giving this great charismatic speech that moves audiences to tears. or you envision these visionary ideas that spark innovation and change, or bold business startups that disrupt industries. Like me, you probably see yourself like giving this Braveheart speech on a mountain with Rocky theme music playing in the background. Then you realize you're locked down to your email again. It's Monday and you're not doing great. So if you ever look at others and think, well, I'm not that and I could never be great.
What I want to do today is I want to tell you the truth. And I want you to hear this. I want you to feel it. I want you to believe it deep in your heart. And that is this, great leadership isn't flashy. It isn't hyped. Great leadership is actually boring. You look really disappointed. Maybe this wasn't the right talk. I don't know. It could be my hand motions because speakers have to have the right hand motions. And I have a challenge because if you don't know, I actually used to do magic shows, like with bunny rabbits and doves. And so that's why I have magic hands when I talk. It's a problem. I've been to counseling for it. So I'm gonna change my hand motions. I'm gonna try it again. Great leadership is boring.
What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna teach you something. At all of our sites, can you work with me? Everybody, say number one. Hold your finger at number one. Put it to your nose like this, and then I want you to just wash it away like that, just like that. That's sign language for boring. So what we're gonna do is we're just gonna say it together. We're gonna say it together. So at all of our sites, let's do it. What is great leadership? Say it with me. Great leadership is? Now, be careful when you bring your number one toward your nose. If the approach is wrong, it won't be boring. Great leadership is boring, and I do have sincerely good news for you, and that is this, that you don't have to be the best, you don't have to be the smartest, you don't have to be the most talented to be a great leader.
You just have to be consistent. And I wanna drive that thought into your mind today.
