Round 11 - Hawks grind it out, no plan B for Crows? (23.05.26)

23 May 2026

Transcription

Chapter 1: What were the highlights of the Hawks' win over the Crows?

0.031 - 11.006 Gerard

Thursday night, Hawks back on the winner's list. Crows just look a bit plain. You had a bit of time to absorb it, Simmo. We did it together. How have you come away from Thursday night's game?

0

11.707 - 29.932 Unknown

I really like the honesty of Adelaide, and I really don't like the honesty of Adelaide. I just don't know the depth of what they do from a style point of view, Gerard. It's just an honest, dour back six game. You know, they've got the top-end talent that can win you, and we've seen it happen, win you games.

0

30.012 - 39.145 Unknown

And Ken would know more about the depth of Adelaide and what's happened from last year to this year. But I just look at them and there's not a lot of pizzazz outside of the talent.

0

Chapter 2: What issues are the Crows facing in their gameplay?

39.486 - 60.227 Unknown

They didn't score a goal from the back half on the weekend. And it wasn't really that type of game, Ken, but they don't. They don't add a handball forward. They're a handball backside. Yeah, so if you work them out around the contest and clearance and pressure, then you got them. That seems to be the perception at the moment. Is that a little bit too raw, Ken, or are they deeper than that?

0

60.427 - 69.806 Kenny

No, I've seen a lot of Adelaide this year because I've done quite a bit of their games. And I just don't think they're at the level they were last year with their top-end players, perhaps.

0

Chapter 3: How does Adelaide's style of play affect their performance?

69.846 - 88.459 Kenny

They've had a fair bit of disruption with injury and everything else. But every team we've talked about almost this morning have had some sort of injury disruption. But when you're at the top, it makes it a bit harder. I mean, their challenge is... they seem to be still wanting to play a little bit more of a passive game than a more dynamic game. And I think that's the challenge.

0

88.479 - 105.925 Kenny

Because when I've seen them play the week before, they kick 10 goals to zip in a quarter. And that's the Crows we want to see. But we don't often get to see them play. Like, there seems to be a handbrake on them. I've got to say that. It feels like there's a handbrake on the Crows and about how you're allowed to play and the way you should be playing. And, you know, Rankin goes down...

0

105.905 - 123.614 Kenny

with another injury, and he looks like an exciting... But I kept hearing at the start, you know, Rankin and Rochelle, he can't play on ball together because they won't do the defensive stuff. Well, teach them to do the defensive stuff at some point, but get your creative players being creative. And I think that's what you need for the Crows. They just don't have that.

0

123.654 - 141.158 Kenny

And, you know, Wayne Miller is playing outstanding football down back. He's on his own. But he's on his own. You know, even, you know, the blokes who are down there. Jordan Dawson, I mean... Gee, that bloke just – he's amazing with the way he carries that football team. But, you know, there's – what did you call him? The good Adelaide and you're not so good?

0

141.198 - 146.424 Kenny

Or I can't remember what you just said. There was parts you love and parts you don't like.

146.444 - 157.495 Unknown

Well, they're just – yeah, it's a very predictable scout if you're playing Adelaide. You beat them at the contest in pressure, you're going to be a long way towards winning. And that's with most sides, but they don't have –

157.475 - 174.991 Kenny

They don't have a plan B. No, Nixie said after the game, he said that, you know, we were happy with half the game. And that's the greatest example I can give you of Adelaide. They're a half a game team. They play halves or they play quarters. You know, and a lot of teams would be pretty happy if they could get into a game against Hawthorne and be thereabouts.

175.011 - 192.216 Kenny

But the reality is Adelaide finished on top of the ladder last year. They need to be better than just playing half-game football. They need to play a full-game football. And Riley Thillthorpe, if there's not something wrong with him, I've not seen it before. I mean, he's not being – and then he's being thrown on ball at different times to play as a ruck rover.

Chapter 4: What challenges does Adelaide face with their current roster?

192.377 - 210.021 Kenny

I mean – Goodness, you didn't pick Tex because you had Riley back in the team. Well, leave him in the forward line and get him to impact as a key forward. If he can't impact as a key forward, well, maybe he shouldn't be getting picked if his back is causing him so many problems. And that's all. I don't know any answers to that because I don't know the absolute ins at the footy club.

0

210.041 - 217.03 Kenny

But I'm not, I don't feel like, I think actually, you know what? I think they're playing exactly the way they are.

0

217.668 - 241.431 Kenny

they're about an eighth to tenth team that's what i think about them i don't think they're any better than that so and it's up to them to prove to us that they actually are better than that not not for me to tell them if they are or they're not but that's just what i'm saying yep well they've got the buy coming up i think tom the first of five weeks of buys which you know we've just come out of so we had the first five rounds we had buys in them and then the next five weeks we're going to have buys in them and

0

241.411 - 255.189 Unknown

It's actually really good for footy clubs now to get to work on some things and they might work on their offense as much as their defense. And yeah, these buyers that are coming up, they're going to be good for the clubs, I must admit, but I'm not quite sure you spread it over five weeks.

0

255.409 - 261.377 Tom

So we get, Tom's got a lot of detail on this front. Just before you head to TV, Simo, give us your assessment of Hawthorne.

262.083 - 281.56 Unknown

Oh, geez, I think Mitch has fired a few bullets this year. He has. I think he's got the bazooka out on the weekend, and it was about field position. So this one wasn't... I don't think any of his frustrations is about individuals. I think it's the collective, whether it's work rate, intensity, and on the weekend it was... It was field position in wet weather.

281.64 - 298.081 Unknown

Don't muck around with the ball would have been the message before the game. And I think that's what he was saying the first quarter and a half. They're trying to play this pretty dry weather football. And when they got their hands dirty, they looked as good as anyone. And I think their coaching during the week with positions was as good as the coaching on the day.

298.101 - 304.088 Unknown

So I think he's had a challenging couple of weeks in the box and had a really good night and a good week in the box this week.

305.941 - 326.9 Kenny

Kenny? Yeah, no, I think they did everything that they would have wanted to do the Hawks with after Sam's little blow-up, but it was clear. It was territory. I mean, the fans, we just talked about handball game and the bits and pieces and what you need to do, and their challenge was the conditions didn't really allow them to kick and catch too much and go sideways. Just get it in.

Chapter 5: How can the Crows improve their offensive strategy?

327.4 - 346.531 Kenny

And Hardwick was a good move and a great move because we've seen him do it before, and they were trying to play, I think, their system that they've had. for most of the year with Gunston in there. And then they said to Hardwick, you go back and play as Jack Gunston and you be the disconnector and you be the one-on-one matchup that we want to go to because he's such a good player.

0

346.551 - 361.56 Kenny

I mean, he is a really underrated player. And Sam said that himself after the game. You know, he's such a great player. He's probably saved four goals every week. Well, this week he actually kicked four goals. So, you know, they're... They're one of the teams who are getting it done when they need to. And I think they're a bit the opposite to the Crows.

0

361.58 - 371.574 Kenny

They've been able to win enough when they need to win enough and hold themselves in a good position. And they've got plenty of upside still to come, the Hawks. With Will Day, did he play? Was it last night he played? Yeah, he played VFL last night, Kenny.

0

371.594 - 386.717 Unknown

65% game time. Sorry, 65 minutes he played. So about 50% game time. 16 disposals. He's a good chance to play AFL next week. It depends how he gets through the next few days. But they're really keen to get back in. And he did everything he could last night. When's their bye? The Hawks' bye.

0

386.737 - 408.064 Kenny

I haven't got it in front of me yet, and I've asked you a rude question probably to put you on notice, but I just feel like their bye will play a little bit. So if I can get maybe the bye, if I can get a couple of games into him before the bye, with 23 now, with the extra man on the bench, they can probably manage that a bit better. I reckon I'd go one more week of caution.

408.124 - 418.379 Kenny

I think he's had such an interruption recently They're in a pretty good spot. They're not needing him to be absolutely out there right now. They just need him to be out there at the end of the year for a long run of games.

418.579 - 426.951 Unknown

One thing they've been able to do for him is because his foot is okay. He's been able to run a lot, so he's got good conditioning in his legs, which he didn't have in the back half of last year.

426.991 - 443.509 Kenny

It's just about whether... Have you ever heard people tell you, Tommy, that... Nothing prepares you like round one. People have said that to me. I wouldn't know myself, but I have heard it, Kenny. It's a fascinating thing because the amount of running and training you can do versus actually playing.

443.909 - 460.806 Kenny

So I think I'd give him a few more minutes at VFL level where he can choose, but he will still get shocked when he comes back into his first game. So whenever that is, I mean, we're not going to interfere with Hawthorne's management of a player who's so valuable. So I'll just look forward to watching him play. I think he's a star.

Chapter 6: What impact do injuries have on team performance?

526.31 - 542.39 Kenny

The week before, we've seen a couple of edits where he really burst to get after opposition, and maybe he struggles a little bit with that. But I think it's up to him to get his conditioning at a level where he can absolutely – manage the things that he needs to do because he's got to play in the midfield.

0

542.41 - 560.034 Kenny

If he doesn't play in the midfield for that team, they are too vanilla in that position and they have to be better than that. And Isaac is not that. He's the rainbow. He's got all the colours. He's got everything you want and you want to see him play. And so is Rochelle in some ways. You can share that... You know, a little bit of both.

0

560.074 - 570.724 Kenny

You can understand why they want one in the forward line and why they don't. But they've got enough match winners in the forward line, really. If they, you know, if you think about Freeman, who we just talked around, they've got enough match winners with their big players if they get them going.

0

571.164 - 585.658 Unknown

And Phil Thorpe's got himself suspended. A gut punch that Greg Swan put on the agenda at the start of the week. Sorry, start of the year. And he hit Lloyd Meek and he's picked himself up a week. So you'd imagine if he misses, then Tex Walker gets through the sand full this weekend. That's just a straight swap. You know where he belongs, don't you?

0

585.878 - 600.919 Kenny

Dummy bag. Yep, straight in it. I can't believe they'd still do that. I mean, I'm sure it would have frustrated me if I was coaching, but to watch that, I go, how can you do that today? What do you get out of that? Well, I mean, you're not hurting the bloke.

601.841 - 611.095 Kenny

You're just frustrating your teammates and you're letting your teammates down, Riley, and stop doing it and everyone else in the comp stop doing it because we want to watch you play, not watch you sit on the sidelines with us.

611.075 - 639.597 Gerard

The game has to sharpen up its protocols around the head assessments. Yes. The Nick Watson case is the gold standard is straight off the ground. So the behind-the-goals vision where the medico runs within a few metres of him and then immediately turns away, that passes no muster. I can't believe how slow we are to this. Straight off and then straight back on. So if you're fine...

639.577 - 642.76 Gerard

And if you need to go through the 20 minutes, so be it.

642.94 - 654.191 Unknown

But straight off. So as the regulations and the legislation are at the moment, Hawthorne did everything by the book. The Hawthorne doctor went out, did a quick chat to him, which I call a quick test.

Chapter 7: What adjustments did the Hawks make during the game?

818.227 - 839.8 Gerard

This is so easy to fix. I just don't understand why we're not doing it. Yeah. And then it's the, Nick, your responsibility here is to run to the bench. Sam, your responsibility here is to run to the bench. And then it's like you say to your eight-year-old, the sooner you come in and do the dishes, the sooner you'll be back outside. I like that. But you just have to do it straight away.

0

840.521 - 842.223 Unknown

And it should start next week. Of course it should.

0

842.243 - 855.816 Gerard

This is Laura Kane's parameters. Because we're 18 months overdue on this. This is not like it's suddenly reared its head. That should have been the change after the Jeremy Cameron thing. What? It's not your choice. Cheers. Off. And then it just becomes commonplace.

0

856.177 - 865.129 Unknown

And the only way the ARC intervenes is if the player gets sent back on by the club and the ARC sees more vision or essentially overrules the club doctor, which can happen.

0

865.31 - 865.51 Kenny

Yeah.

865.71 - 874.443 Unknown

Which they said they won't do, didn't they? No, no. They are doing it. The bottom line is they can overrule. The ARC doctor gets the final call if the ARC doctor wants the final call. Yeah.

874.523 - 895.068 Gerard

But once you've been off, I think you've fulfilled your obligations and the medical assessments have been made. But if you haven't come off... So I think we've overcomplicated it and we seem to have targeted the wrong part of it. We have two rolled gold examples in consecutive nights. Just come to the bench and we'll sort it out from there. This is crunch time for round 11.

895.168 - 898.577 Gerard

We look ahead to the Pendlebury milestone and the issues of the week next.
