Chapter 2: What were the highlights of the Richmond game discussed?

38.071 - 49.475 Tom Morris

So, Simmo and Kenny, we've got a lot to talk to you about and to revel in last night, but we have been watching as Tom Sims has gone down with what appears to be a serious knee injury. What do you know so far, Adam?

0

50.617 - 69.68 Adem Yze

Yeah, unfortunately, it's not looking good. So, yeah, the VFR doctors had a look at it and the initial diagnosis might be an ACL, so... Obviously, you go and get scans and you've got to wait for those scans to obviously work out exactly what it is. But right now, it's not looking great for the kid, which is really unfortunate.

0

69.7 - 80.157 Adem Yze

He's first came back and come back from a nippy killer and he's obviously gone through a fair bit over the pre-season. So, yeah, they're the highs and lows of footy. We had a great win last night and then...

0

80.44 - 104.237 Adem Yze

um he obviously gets some devastating news today so um yeah our thoughts are with him how hard does that hit you sitting in the stands knowing what he's been through to get back out there yeah well that's that's footy like it's we come here and we had a bit of a joke about it Santa Claus you feel like the boys are kicking a Jew off um an early VFL game and boys are slipping around and um and then to see family like it's

0

105.01 - 122.068 Adem Yze

They ride the bumps, they ride every bump of their young lads running around and seeing his mum and dad and they've obviously helped him through what he went through at the end of last year, hurt his elbow and then obviously found out that he had a navicular. So the rehab process around that is, there is a bit of time.

123.369 - 131.558 Adem Yze

So he's worked his butt off to get back and then obviously the first game back he's done that. So yeah, like I said, that's footy, but you just hate to see it.

132.854 - 144.21 Adam Simpson

It's Adam Simpson here, mate. Congratulations on last night. Nothing better than getting to bed at 4 o'clock and getting up at 8 to go watch the seconds play. The rebuild process, you're a couple of years in.

144.45 - 155.385 Adam Simpson

Do you think these injuries, how far back has that pushed the development of the young players, the fact that they're not on the track, they're not training together, they're not playing together? Has it pushed you back at all? Is everything on plan at the moment?

156.412 - 160.216 Adem Yze

Oh, well, it depends. In the end, you want to get gains in the players.

Chapter 3: What is the latest update on Tom Sims' injury?

160.236 - 184.261 Adem Yze

When you think about rebuilding, you've got to get gains. You want to get players. You want Sammy Law to get 50 games as quick as he can. I'm watching Harley Reid on the weekend. I think he's playing his 60th game this weekend. And in his 49th game, he's influencing gains. So when you're going through a rebuild, you're trying to do that. Our average gains at the moment is really low.

0

184.321 - 203.228 Adem Yze

So we want to get... our high talent obviously playing AFL footy but then playing together and obviously this just stagnates that a little bit because they're not out there but in saying that Noah Roberts-Thompson and a few of our other young lads at Tommy Burton, Liam Fawcett, they're starting to get games that maybe they wouldn't have.

0

203.248 - 222.135 Adem Yze

So we're getting games into some of them, but right now they're a real high talent that we really want it to be. All that we really need to get games into are just missing right now. So yeah, the back half of this year, we'll hopefully get a sort of 10 or 11 games into the majority of the ones that we really want to.

0

222.936 - 227.442 Adem Yze

So that's just, yeah, it just slowed us down a little bit, but the process is still the same.

0

227.978 - 243.589 Adam Simpson

So when you took over, I spoke to you very briefly about your want for the spirit and fight. And I think for the most part, we see that with the Tigers group. What's the first thing you chase? Ken and I spoke about this earlier, but coaching a young side, perhaps team defence is not something they learned at junior level.

243.609 - 247.978 Adam Simpson

But what's your number one focus for development in terms of the style of play? What did you come in with?

248.768 - 272.177 Adem Yze

Well, style of play, you want to be balanced on all three phases. We think our offense and defense marry up. Whether you're playing fast or slow, you've got to be able to defend behind all of them or all phases. So, yeah, even with the young list and even with the guys that we've got out, we want to play the same way. We want to be really tough in a contest and maximize and minimize clearance.

272.478 - 291.556 Adem Yze

And then when we get a chance with the ball, we want to go fast when we need to. And depending on where we create turnovers, we need to be on the same page. So the synergy around our offense won't matter who's who's not playing. We just want to play the same way. So we should be thinking the same things on offense and team defense. Look, on the last night, we weren't good enough.

291.576 - 310.737 Adem Yze

Again, we've given up way too many marks. We're defending for too long. And that's... Part of that is because we've got young forwards and they're making wrong decisions that give up sort of five or six marks in a row just with the one decision. So we've got some teething issues around our defense, but we want to be really stable on defense and be really hard to play. And so...

Chapter 4: How is Adem Yze managing the rebuild process for Richmond?

652.569 - 674.602 Adem Yze

Yeah, so he's had a strain of his Achilles and... So yeah, the first four weeks are really important for the healing process and he's having another scan and they're really confident that that will just be on track. So he'll start running at that four-week mark. So I think he's not the first week after, but maybe. two or three weeks after, so it might be around 14 or 15, which is pretty cool.

0

674.662 - 694.305 Adem Yze

So he's starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel as well, which is really exciting. I've seen the lads around the rooms last night and celebrating with the young boys after a terrific win for our footy club. They're just itching to get out there and come out and help. So, yeah, the boys have made it the right stuff, which is really exciting.

0

694.657 - 704.633 Adem Yze

important for us as coaches and then we've obviously got to give them a system that they can go out there and express themselves and so far what I've said last night was a nice little example of that.

0

704.663 - 722.624 Unknown

Adam, Tom Morris here. Well done last night. I was speaking to a fitness boss at another club this week, and he mentioned how difficult it is for clubs down the bottom to rebuild quickly for a number of reasons. But he said part of it is the fact that the game is quicker than ever. Collisions are therefore more damaging than ever, shorter pre-season than ever.

0

722.644 - 736.162 Unknown

The AFL wants to restrict contact training as well. You don't get as many minutes working with the players out in the middle. How hard is it to rebuild... aggressively and quickly in the modern-day game, do you think? And do you think that perspective is valid?

737.805 - 760.781 Adem Yze

Oh, well, it is. And I've said this a little bit as well around the shorter pre-season. So, yeah, we're going through that right now. Obviously, mandated start dates and things like that. So what we do have is it's got to be really structured and really precise in what they're doing in their time away. So, yeah, We're not let, obviously, coach them in their time away, but they follow our program.

760.821 - 778.28 Adem Yze

So our leaders need to drive that. And then our performance group, our emerging leaders need to get together and do that as good as anyone. So by the time they walk in at the middle of November or a couple of weeks, we have three or four weeks of training before Christmas, we need to hit the ground running.

778.32 - 792.578 Adem Yze

So, yeah, it does make it a little bit harder, but it doesn't mean, like, in the end, the process has to be the same to... To bounce back and rebuild, you've got to get high talent. So we've done that. Now we've just got to get games into them and that might take a little bit of time.

793.119 - 803.554 Unknown

Do you think if the AFL reduced the contact training drills at each club as they are talking about doing, it would increase injuries or do you think it would decrease injuries?
