Mitch Cleary is reporting that Geelong are investigating potential ACL for Brian Myers, which is an unusual one. We asked Andrew Mackey about this in the AFL Nation pregame last night, and this was his response.

30.44 - 51.553 Andrew Mackey

It's been grumbly for a couple of weeks, actually. So we just thought we'd take the next week or two to try and get that right, and then we'll go from there. But, yeah, same I mentioned in the Blitz discussion, he's been so durable, Grian, and happy to play through most things. But, yeah, the last couple of weeks have just been gradually getting a little bit...

0

51.533 - 60.302 Andrew Mackey

Stiffer, so we thought the short breaks don't help with that situation as well. So we'll assess over the next week or two. So that's about 15 hours ago.

0

60.322 - 63.145 Unknown

This is an ACL. That's a huge blow for the Cats, Simo.

Chapter 2: What injury updates were reported for Geelong's Brian Myers?

63.285 - 63.986 Simo

Just injuries.

0

64.046 - 64.446 Unknown

Just kidding.

0

65.027 - 86.933 Simo

Is it every year or are we just finding more about these? They seem to be mounting up. The game's harder than ever, isn't it? Well, just the pre-seasons are shorter than ever as well. And the season's as long as it's ever been. And now it's got quicker. You wonder what the... what the audit is from the AFL about this. Do you think they need to have an audit? I don't know. Even this rotation.

0

87.193 - 104.814 Simo

And I'll debate with other people. I don't know what Ken thinks about the capping the rotations. Is that good? That means they get more fatigued. They believe that opens the game up. More fatigue means the ball flows better. Yeah, but does it mean more injuries? And not in the second halves, but the next time they play, they've just gassed themselves the week before. The game's opened up.

0

104.834 - 124.155 Simo

That's great. And isn't the school of thought is that it's less explosive, less volatile, less... Impactful. Dacos doesn't come off in the last quarter on the weekend, which is fine. That's a good move. But you can't do that every game. Because you will get fatigued and then eventually you'll break. So it's just an interesting conversation. Is it getting worse?

124.636 - 127.921 Simo

Ken, do you think it's getting worse or it's just the normal season?

128.202 - 149.704 Ken

Well, there's no proof for me to show the opposite to that. And that is high rotations cause the game to become more injuries, worse, slower scoring, all the things that we're trying to introduce into the game. We're trying to change to get better scoring. The rotations on with you, Simo. I don't think rotations... One of the reasons a few... They talked about rotations.

150.004 - 163.076 Ken

They didn't like seeing so many people come off and on the ground. It's ridiculous. Player safety is the first thing we need to worry about. Injuries are... seem to be getting more and more as we go. And that was my personal experience in the last couple of years.

163.256 - 181.131 Unknown

Lightning delays at the SCG last night. What did they say about lockout laws in Sydney? This one went past 11 o'clock. In fact, one more lightning delay, the game would have finished early and Sydney would have won with a lower score. Yeah, it was one more lightning delay away from that. So Kernow kicks three, Toby Green kicks nought, goals five. And the Swans are box office.

Chapter 3: What were the key moments from the Swans vs. Giants match?

463.953 - 479.812 Sam Edmund

And in fact, the opposite is happening. So it's about what those local markets are willing to watch. Channel 7, free to air into Sydney, They only watch the Swans. They don't give a stuff about Geelong and the Western Bulldogs. In a couple of weeks, it's a showdown. Everyone will lose their mind that it's not a standalone Friday night showdown.

0

480.073 - 491.328 Sam Edmund

But the showdown on TV last year into Melbourne was the lowest rating game of the round in Melbourne. No one watched it. Why? But they will watch it in Adelaide and they'll watch it in primetime and in a higher number.

0

491.348 - 492.97 Ken

Was it a double A? Was it a double A?

0

492.95 - 511.043 Sam Edmund

It was a Saturday night. Yep. It was a Saturday night and it was a double up, but no one, no one. What was the other game? Just help me out. I can't, I can't. I'd have to go back and have a look. Half a story Sammy they call you. No, the rating. Kenny, Kenny, I can say that from Adelaide. They're the facts. No one, you watch your team in your market, right? It's probably not rocket science.

0

511.023 - 528.483 Sam Edmund

And in a high number, too, on a Friday night than in any other slot, that's beyond any doubt. People will watch on a night slot more than they will on an afternoon slot. It's the same in Sydney, and it's proven. And on Fox, you have a choice, right? So it's not for the hardcore fans like us, like Kenny. They've got the choice, and you've got to make the choice. But they've got us.

528.923 - 548.944 Sam Edmund

As annoying as it is for us, they have us. They are trying to... engineer a bigger market. They're trying to give these fans in these markets the best chance to see the clubs in the best slots. They're trying to grow their audience. The other thing is that with two games on a Friday gives a better flex on a Thursday night. Now, each club can only have three five-day breaks.

548.924 - 562.992 Sam Edmund

But four teams on a Friday night gives them a better flex on a Thursday. So the benefit here, you'd like to think it will protect and help guard against the Thursday night shockers, which we had. We had Essendon. We had Carlton. We had some shocking Thursday night games as part of the floating fixture last year.

563.012 - 581.058 Sam Edmund

So the idea of this is we get greater quality control on a Thursday night in the back half of the fixture. I'm coming around. So, Kenny, are you with me? I'm listening. That's a start. But that is why, right? The ratings are bigger. The gate is bigger. It makes sense. Into the market.

581.078 - 604.361 Simo

It just feels – I mean, the best time to watch football, trust me, for the last 12 years being in Western Australia, the footy comes on at 5.30. That's heaven. And it's so good. And a bit different in Adelaide as well. But to watch a game at 5.30 – And it's all over by nine. I just think the WA market is free. They're not going to end up competing with anyone over there.

Chapter 4: How do injuries impact the Giants' season performance?

604.802 - 611.129 Simo

So why can't they work with the Western Australian clubs if they're going to do something on a Friday and then at least gives everyone a bit of an opportunity?

0

611.349 - 628.328 Unknown

Yeah, I'm with you completely. I think the future of this game, Sydney and Giants, I'd be surprised if they did a double up next year on a Friday night, Sam. I think the AFL will listen to the Swans. I would be surprised based on the conversations that have happened this week. Oh, yeah? I don't think it's necessarily going to be a double up again next year.

0

629.049 - 638.782 Unknown

But part of the reason there's a big crowd there last night, 44,000, it's because they like to go to the footy in Sydney. On a Friday night. That's a healthy crowd. You don't want that early Saturday afternoon.

0

638.882 - 651.679 Sam Edmund

If we have it like Kenny's way, and lots of people are with Kenny here, and they don't get that Friday night, they don't get it. We're playing Geelong and the Western Bulldogs, and that game will be a Saturday twilight, Sunday twilight. People don't go. People don't watch.

0

651.743 - 672.363 Unknown

Yep. Some MRO news out of last night. So I think Joe Fonte's in some trouble for a bump on Isaac Heaney in the fourth quarter. I think this is going to be careless, medium impact, high contact. We'll wait and see whether that's how it plays out. But that happened late in the game. And I think that's just a run of the mill, weak meat and potatoes. This is for safety.

672.384 - 680.299 Unknown

It does more than keep you safe. Search Work Safer Farms to find out how. We're going to dive into Carlton and Collingwood in a few moments.
