Your attachment style is like a blueprint for a house you want to build. You need to know what materials, expectations, etc., you need to make sure that the house will stand the test of time. It’s the same for your relationships. You want to understand your attachment style to build a healthy relationship. By getting to know your attachment style, you can gain insight into how you approach relationships and what you need to feel safe and secure. Attachment theory was developed by psychoanalyst John Bowlby and his colleague Mary Ainsworth in the 1970s. Their research on child development and parent-child attachment patterns has since been expanded upon by many other researchers. It has become an important framework for understanding relationship dynamics in both childhood and adulthood. There are four attachment styles, Anxious preoccupied, Dismissive Avoidant, Anxious avoidant, and Secure attachment. To help you zero in on which you might be, I have listed 12 traits in this podcast for each attachment style. You may exhibit a couple or few of the behaviors of all the attachment styles, but we are looking for which you have more traits than others. Remember, this is not a diagnosis but a guide to understanding your attachment and how you can be aware of them to manage your emotions and relationships. The next episode will talk about how we can heal our attachment style. I would love to hear your thoughts on this episode. Support the show
