What’s the overall focus of this episode and why is the Tour Divide starting soon?
Hello, hello, welcome back to Detours. It's been a hot minute. May was a total whirlwind and more on that later. But this week we've got a mashup for you as there are so many incredible things happening in the world of cycling right now. We've got the Tour Divide kicking off this Friday. And in this episode, we hear from some of the women lining up, as well as Hannah Gladder, who is riding 3,500 miles, that's 5,600 kilometers on the Great Plains gravel route in the US. It's so good to hear from the community and I hope you enjoy hearing from these folks as much as I do. First up, let's hear from the women of the Tour Divide.
Hi. I'm Paula Gibson from New Zealand. I'm competing in this year's tour divide. Um, it's the first time I've done Four and a half thousand kilom kilometer. race, ride, adventure. What excites me about the Tour Divide is that the unknown, I really love to ride somewhere new, exciting. Riding my bike. Over those mountain ranges. Super excited about the adventure. I love the anticipation of not knowing what's around the next corner. All the challenges that it faces. Or your face on the way. What excites me about the two divide is pretty much what I've just said, the unknown. What will be my biggest challenge? Probably the resupply, resupplying at gas stations. I'm vegetarian. I don't really go for Big burgers and chips.
So Gonna be probably struggling to find a a healthy type of meal or consume enough calories. What would I say to my future self? I think the biggest thing I've got to do on the tour divide is to be nice to myself. Um, not be too hard if I don't make a destination that I want to make, I like to push myself, I like to challenge myself. But when things get tough or I have a mechanical then I've got to be nice to myself about fixing that mechanical. and nice to myself about not achieving that goal on that day. But I wish everybody all the best for the tour divide and that everybody's having their own adventure out there. And I absolutely love it. I just can't wait to get there. in start writing. Cool, see you all there.
Bye. Hi detours, my name is Megan Hakkinen and I'm from Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. I'm returning to the Tour Divide after taking home the win in 2024. Uh, I had a really good time and things fell off the rails a bit when I got to New Mexico, but I had so much fun racing that year that I've decided to come back. Uh I raced the mountain races last year and I think uh I learned a lot. I grew as an athlete and as a person, and I'm hoping to take what I learned about the divide route and what I learned from myself last year and kind of combine them together and uh hopefully come back for an even faster time and just um yeah, a big adventure. I'm most excited about spending time. in the mountains and getting to Colorado.
Um it's a beautiful state. I I love just being up at two, three thousand meters and I I I'm excited just to to get back down there. I think the biggest challenge for me personally is going to be dealing with fatigue and sleep deprivation. Um, it's just always hard to find that balance between rest time and ride time.
Why does Paula Gibson say the unknown part of the Tour Divide excites her?
And I become a pretty grumpy, awful person when I am tired. And I yeah, I'm I'm afraid of that person. So just trying to take care of myself and get good cool. quality sleep and um maybe a little bit more sleep and be able to kind of, you know, yeah, ride through those lulls until the energy picks up again, I guess. Uh one piece of advice to your future self and things get hard out there, keep riding. Stay on the bike. Just keep riding. Things will get better. It's just pretty simple. Um and I'm I'm really excited to to be back at the tour divide.
Hi Detours, my name is Hannah and I'm from Estes Park, Colorado. And what's brought me to the tour divide this year? Um, this has actually been a dream of mine for the past five years. In college, I was studying abroad in Tasmania, Australia, and I didn't have a car, and so I bought this used mountain bike, and I would just ride that bike everywhere. I would ride it to the beach, I would ride it to my classes.
