Bij iedereen die iets van hem gelezen heeft. Jess Walter is zijn naam, geboren in 1965. Hij woont in Spau Can in de staat Washington in Amerika. Bovenaan links. Ik leerde hem kennen dankzij tv-presentator Lieve van Gils, die zijn boek Schitterende ruïnes koos. Als één van zijn drie boeken in deze podcast. Beautiful Ruins. In het Engels is een fenomenale roman, waanzinnig gecomponeerd, prachtig geschreven, grappig en aangrijpend, zoals eigenlijk al zijn werk.
Jazz Walter was onlangs enkele dagen in ons land om zijn nieuwe roman So Far Gone te promoten. Zo verheen is de titel in het Nederland. Ik interviewde hem voor de boekvoorstelling in boekhandel Books Boos in het centrum van Gent. I feel like we're we're waiting for the bombs to fall. This feels like the place that people might have hid s uh 70 or 80 years ago. So we're safe, right? We're safe, yes. Unless we get bombed later with the cocktails.
The cocktails, and the books and cocktails, yeah, Bobby. Um did you did you read something on the plane to Europe? I did.
I had never read Georges Simenon, and so I read Dirty Snow, which is one of the it is brilliant. It's such a dark novel. And I was a huge fan of Camus and The Stranger. And I think Dirty Snow might be a more compelling story about the kind of the existential dread at the bottom of human beings. Takes place in uh during World War II with just the most reprehensible character. And you are forced by the narration to follow this character as your protagonist. Yeah. And anytime you are with a character like that, I always feel like I've gotten in the car with someone who is so unreliable and drunk and I don't know where we're going. And so to be reading Um I flew from From Spokane, Washington to Seattle, Washington, Seattle to um Amsterdam, and then Amsterdam to Nice when I first came over.
And so I should be sleeping on the plane. Instead I was just enrapped by this book. Yes.
And um when you leave um spoke oh how do I pronounce it? How do I pronounce it? Spokane spoke can. Spokane. Spokane.
Yes. Oh my god, it's difficult. Spokane. It's a Native American word. It's actually was spokan. Spokan. And so the vowels were don't are really sort of non-existent. Okay. Spokan. Spokan. But then uh um like so many places in the West that are named for the people who are driven from the place, you know, it has a kind of uh sad and tragic irony to it. But it's uh yeah, it's called Spokehand.
Can't I'm gonna try to say it uh exactly. If you
mess up you will it it happens e in the States too. So many people say spokane.
