Welcome to the DSPN. He's given him. Oh, there you go.
Xavier Numia 0:03
He was forward.
Justin Horo 0:04
Oh, a punch up now in midfield. Fraser's involved. The Devlin Sports Podcast Network.
Jamie Wall 0:13
Greetings. Counting down to All Blacks versus Italy in Wellington, where I clearly am not. If you'd like to find out why, we've got All Blacks assistant coach Neil Barnes, followed up by Xavier Noumia and Sam Derry. Here they are.
Justin Horo 0:29
Neil, I guess just to start with, can you kind of talk us through the selection philosophy this week? I guess as you weigh the temptation to kind of Have some continuity after a first up performance with having a look around your squad. How are you looking at the weekend from a selection point of view?
Neil Barnes 0:48
It's actually a really good question and there's been a lot of debate in our coaches circle to be honest and selectors as well. Showing respect for Italy because they're actually a very good side now and also we've got a squad to grow. So yeah there's some people that went alright last week that might not be in there but there were also some really really good performances that I think are going to be rewarded. But yeah we've got a little eye on making sure we respect it's a test match and it's got to be won well. but at the same time letting some other players probably have a chance to make their case as well.
Justin Horo 1:24
What were the sort of chief, I guess, themes that came out of your review? Can you just talk us through, I guess, the overall kind of review and what it told you?
Neil Barnes 1:34
Yeah, there was a massive amount of install went in that first week. The content was quite big, but the biggest thing was we wanted a mindset shift. You've heard talk about positivity inside that, inside the game. We probably got a bit carried away at times. But yeah, we're comfortable where we're at. One week's preparation to put that amount in. We got the result and we just have to get better now.

What is the selection philosophy for the All Blacks this week?

Neil Barnes 1:56
And so the boys have been through that this morning. We're pretty clear on what we're going to do now.
Gary Ablett Jr. 2:01
Was there any thought to giving Ardy a spell this week? He's obviously had that big run of rugby in 18 months.
Neil Barnes 2:06
Oh, look, at the end of the day, he's one of many that we discussed. But yeah, it's considered across every position, to be honest. But yeah, he has. So have a lot of the Superboys, to be fair.
Jamie Wall 2:18
Coach, just reflecting on the game, were you happy with what you saw from your own areas of coaching?
Neil Barnes 2:25
Yeah, well, there's always room for improvement. We're an All Black team, so we're always striving to be the best, so comfortable, I'd say, with what we got out of the game.
Jamie Wall 2:35
It felt like there were quite a few areas where the All Blacks successfully managed to convert negative rucks into full momentum quite quickly again. Is that something you got picked up on?
Neil Barnes 2:45
Look, I thought our breakdown results were awesome on the weekend. It was lightning quick ball everywhere, and so that hasn't happened by accident. There's been a lot of work going on that week into our footwork and our carry. and people's roles to make sure we can get one-man tackles. If you keep running into a wall all day, defence coaches are going to dominate. So, yeah, a lot of work going into being best at basics, and a lot of that's to do with your footwork and your carry and the options around you.
Jamie Wall 3:09
Had a bit of chat last week about data and numbers. Luke Jacobson told us that that's getting given to the players. How's the response been to that?
Neil Barnes 3:20
Yeah, positive. It's not like someone's turning up like the police to show you up. It's just real stats that will help our game in areas that we can easily improve is all it's about and a bit of fun along the way and a bit of hard work too if you're not getting it right.
Justin Horo 3:36
Is defence an area that needs to get better?
Neil Barnes 3:38
Every part of the game does, but honestly there's a lot of growth to be made in that area, just the same as there is in attack and in the set-piece. But yeah, it's just one of the many. I don't think we're going to be comfortable leaking that many tries, to be honest, but there are a lot of areas of our game, to be fair, that need a shift.
