Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

0.031 - 4.936 Dan Thomas

From 30 for 30 podcasts.

10.002 - 18.591 Craig Burley

Brian Pata, senior defensive lineman from Miami, gunned down. The key to this case, it's Brian.

0

18.611 - 26.359 Luis Garcia

An hour before he died, he was on the phone arguing with somebody. This might be a hit. You want the truth. They just want a conviction. Being placed under arrest.

We had a killer amongst us. Murder at the U. Listen now. Welcome to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Craig Burley. Later on the show, we'll be reflecting on Arsenal dropping points in the Premier League, but we'll kick things off in the Spanish capital. Atletico Madrid taking Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final. And what...

49.846 - 71.145 Dan Thomas

A first half this was for Atletico Madrid. They would put four past Barcelona. It could be more as well. Barca in the second half thought they got one back. It would be chalked off after a six-minute VAR delay. And it Garcia then sent off. Barca then very much with it. All to do on March the 3rd as Atleti will take a 4-0 lead into the second leg at the Camp Nou.

71.125 - 82.435 Dan Thomas

Luis Garcia is with us, but I want to start with Alex Kirkland, pitch side. We discussed it at the break. I don't think I can remember a first half performance like that from Atleti in a very long time, Alex.

84.018 - 110.363 Alex Kirkland

yeah it was incredible and the crowds were absolutely loving it it felt like there were more goals there they could have scored even more they were absolutely deserving of that lead and as you guys mentioned earlier on it's one of the frustrating things about this and let's go with your team because we know they are they are capable of this sometimes we saw it in the last round in the copper already they went to betis and won five nil here they've scored four against barcelona and like i say a source of frustration for the fans is that

110.343 - 126.053 Alex Kirkland

They can't do it more often, but that doesn't take away from what a special night this was here. That was one of the best first halves I've ever seen at this stadium. The players just finished a lap of honor behind me, heading off the pitch and down the tunnel. Yes, the second half didn't live up to the first.

126.093 - 131.683 Alex Kirkland

It was never going to, but still what we saw, like I said, that opening 45 minutes was something pretty spectacular.

Chapter 2: What happened in Atlético Madrid's 4-0 victory over Barcelona?

151.13 - 175.702 Craig Burley

But too often we've seen it in the first 20 minutes, half an hour or first half of games where it's taken until they're behind for them to play like this. And so that is a frustration. But I'm going to say something now that I don't think I've probably never said in terms of a result. And I honestly mean this. I said to you just before the end of the game, I think Atleti need a fifth.

0

177.545 - 181.331 Craig Burley

That sounds crazy. Because normally you say, I think they need a third.

0

Chapter 3: How did Atlético Madrid dominate Barcelona in the first half?

181.551 - 203.484 Craig Burley

I think they need a second. I said to you, I think they need a fifth because that's how bonkers Atleti can be, particularly away from home. And that's how bonkers this Barcelona team can be. Now, if they defend like that again at home, the chances are they won't keep a clean sheet. And will they defend like that again? I mean, possibly.

0

203.584 - 229.855 Craig Burley

Ian Dark and Steve McManaman in the commentary were saying, somebody's going to say to Hansi Fleck, we can't keep doing this. But he's already been steadfast. And he said, I don't care. I'm going to take the bad ones on the chin and we're going to keep doing our defensive line this way. That's why I say it is possible for this Barcelona team to score four at home. There's no question.

0

Chapter 4: What were the key moments that led to Barcelona's disallowed goal?

230.358 - 248.736 Craig Burley

That's how good they can be. They were not tonight. Far from it. In fact, they were very poor tonight going forward. But they, you could argue, are one of the top three teams in European football in terms of attacking talent. So they could score four. Mark my words. But they could lose another four at home.

0

248.856 - 254.504 Craig Burley

That's why the second leg, and I mean it, people may think I'm crazy, the second leg ain't over.

0

Chapter 5: What are the implications of Atlético's lead going into the second leg?

255.145 - 266.121 Craig Burley

And I'm not selling that for TV. No. Because we have it. I'm telling you. I think everyone thought you were. In case I'm trying to play the corporate card and sell it, I am not. That's how crazy Barcelona could be.

0

266.702 - 274.033 Dan Thomas

Another crazy thing to say, which I think is true as well, Luis. 4-0. Barca were lucky to be 4-0 down at half-time.

0

275.212 - 298.057 Luis Garcia

Yeah, definitely. We saw just on the highlights, another two chances, big chances in front of goal. But I think Madrid do have even a bigger result. And I want to pick it from Korea. I totally agree. When I saw Kumasi scoring that first goal, I thought, OK, this is going to continue open. In the moment, Barcelona got that first one, even though the result ended up in a 4-1 win.

0

298.598 - 320.254 Luis Garcia

It could have turned around very quickly when you go back to Camp Nou. But the way and the concept of this Barcelona is not that they cannot score four goals. Of course they can do that. But playing like this with that high line, I can see a team that has figured out that movement, that timing on when to start the run, the timing of the runs of Juliano.

0

320.234 - 340.534 Luis Garcia

Once and again and again, they were brilliant. They were perfect. He knew it's been worked, that they have to wait. And much more when the line is right in the middle of the park. You know that there is no side right after. And the line was just right there. So I don't even have to do these U-turns or these movements first to try to break that line. You just have to make the run into the space.

340.754 - 344.918 Luis Garcia

And when you face a team with so much speed on the wide areas, you are going to struggle all the time.

345.118 - 370.407 Craig Burley

I can guarantee you, almost guarantee the second leg, Barcelona will be much better going forward. Rarely see two performances like that from their front players. So I think that's pretty much nailed on. They will be much better at home going forward. What we can't guarantee is whether they clean up this defensive mess. That's the craziness about it.

370.454 - 386.033 Dan Thomas

Just from your point of view Alex, obviously they mentioned the goal that was disallowed in the second half. What information did you get from the sidelines about that? Because obviously six minutes, a long time, looked to be micromanaging what was exactly going on and in the end it was the Lewandowski offside.

387.717 - 408.713 Alex Kirkland

Yeah, well, as usual, Dan, in the stadium, the fans and those of us pitch side as well, no less than pretty much anybody else as these things are happening. You're right, it was six minutes and 23 seconds, the delay. I've been told it was the second longest VAR delay in Spanish football history. There was one that was eight minutes. Apparently, this was second in terms of longevity.
