What inspired Victoria to attend Copenhagen Fashion Week for the first time?
Hi guys, welcome back to Fashion Founders the Podcast. My name is Victoria Smith, and this week is a solo episode. I'm gonna be recapping Copenhagen Fashion Week and going through some fashion trends I noticed, the street style, a behind the scenes on how to attend Fashion Week and what it's really like to be there, sustainability takeaways, and more. And before I get into the episode, I just wanted to ask that if you're listening to this, if you can leave a rating, review, or follow the podcast. It really helps the show grow and I appreciate it so, so much. And thank you for listening. I think Copenhagen is such an interesting fashion week and personally one of the most impactful. This is my first time attending, but I wanted to like three years in a row.
When I was a student in London, I had emailed every designer and no one responded to me. The year after that, I only went to SIF, which is the Copenhagen International Fashion Fair, which is an amazing, amazing place to discover emerging designers. So if you are tired of shopping the same old thing. Look through attendees that show there and you will find and discover amazing brands. I'm also gonna be putting that on Substack and linking a bunch that I found. But I actually just happened to be in Copenhagen. I had no idea it was that fashion week when I went to CIF. And then this year for this winter fashion week, months and months ago, I was just so determined to go because I've admired the way that they have merged sustainability at such a high level of a fashion week.
And really wanted to talk about it on the podcast, on the socials, on Substack. And it worked. And I am so honored and grateful to have been able to attend shows. And I learned a lot about things happening. And I know I have European listeners. I think over in Europe it's mainly London, but I can see on like the show stats that. You guys are actually in like, I think every country in Europe, which is insane. There's some interesting things I learned that are pretty prevalent to Europeans too, specifically when it comes to Substacks. That was actually my first day there. I think I'm gonna go day by day to organize this. I first went to the opening cocktail reception. And the president, Cecily, gave her remarks and talked about global affairs.
And I always think it's important as an American leaving America and going to Europe and hearing other people refer to America, just like understanding how much of an impact the country and the president's policies like tariffs. and pulling out of sustainability efforts can have on these other countries and entrepreneurs there and businesses there and I was expecting people to talk about certain things and I think it always does just kind of strike me again sometimes when you actually really hear from someone of how they've been struggling, how some of their business's struggles are directly impacted by, in this case, in fashion tariffs. And then they also talked about partners of Copenhagen's Fashion Week.
I should have mentioned this earlier, but this is the 20th anniversary of Copenhagen Fashion Week. For some reason, I thought it had been around for a lot longer because I feel like I've been hearing about it. For a while recently and it became known actually as the fifth fashion week. After the big four, which is of course Paris, Milan, London, and New York. But I guess I thought fashion weeks had been around for longer, especially this one. But Paris was actually the first official fashion week. And I'd actually just looked this up. It was in nineteen seventy-three. And so Copenhagen only began in two thousand six. And they've come a long way and have really made a name for themselves. And I think a lot of that is the international recognition of their bold street style.
And then certain breakout designers like Ghani, Stina Goya, Rote, SaxPots. And then, of course, their sustainability efforts. They actually set out certain sustainability requirements. That is so inspiring to me and really gives me hope for the fashion industry at this level.
