What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
I think we have a responsibility as fashion brands to adopt those technologies or work with those startups or small businesses. So that's also something I feel passionate about.
Hello and welcome back to Fashion Founders the Podcast. My name is Victoria Smith, and this week I'm joined by Ghani's chief sustainability officer, Lauren Bartley. I recorded this while I was in Copenhagen for Fashion Week and have been so excited to release this conversation. Ghani is, for lack of a better word, that girl. They're that brand. They're effortlessly cool. They start trends. They don't follow them, all while being sustainable. And it's so cool to hear directly from Lauren about how Ghani approaches sustainability and how their efforts have evolved over time. And they really go all different avenues. They have a partnership with Vestiar Collective. They experiment with different biomaterials.
They report on everything they do and they really champion innovation. Ghani has quite literally written the playbook of how to be a sustainable brand, which is not claiming to be perfect by any means. But just always putting your best foot forward and simply trying, trying to improve, trying to be better, and having it be an open conversation with your community. I felt really inspired from this episode.
How did Lauren Bartley’s unconventional career path lead her to become Ganni’s Chief Sustainability Officer?
And we also get to hear about Lauren's career journey, which is not a traditional one. I'm so grateful to have her on the podcast. And for this episode, I brought my silver Ghani boo bag, which I rented from Rent the Runway. And this is actually the third Ghani bag I have rented from them. I did a polka dot one last spring, this one for Copenhagen, and then a leopard one for New York Fashion Week. And I truly don't think I could have done Fashion Week the way I wanted to without Rent the Runway. Because there is this pressure to wear something new and fun and bold and like it just becomes a lot. And I'm not trying to spend that much money on clothes. And so being able to have this rotation and access different pieces has just been such a game changer for me.
You can get your first month 50% off with code in all caps, RTRX V Smith50. I'll put it in the show notes. And it's literally like $50 and you get access to all these designer pieces. I really can't recommend it enough. Also, if you're able to leave a rating, a review, and follow the podcast, it really helps people find the show so we can continue to get really cool guests like Lauren. So let's get into the episode. And this week's brand highlight is Boy Studios, and that's B-O-I-I. It's a Copenhagen brand that I discovered while I was there. And that's where I got the sequin bandana I'm wearing in the episode. I visited their store while I was there and actually got a couple things because they had some really cute basic sweaters and unique pieces.
And it kind of reminds me of like a Danish version of Brandy Melville, but more colorful. I don't know. But I thought this was such a good find. And if you're heading to Copenhagen, definitely check them out. Well, hi, Lauren. Hi. I'm so excited to have you on the podcast. Ghani is definitely one of those brands I've admired for a very long time for their sustainability efforts and the fact that you're the chief sustainability officer. I can't wait to hear what led you to that and what you do now in your role.
Amazing. Thank you for having me. Thank you for being here.
Here. So I'd love to get started with how you even got into fashion. Was this something you always thought you'd be a part of? How did you land here?
Yeah, I always knew I wanted to be in fashion, but I didn't exactly know What? So I yeah, I grew up basically in a place called Bristol in England and I, yeah, knew very early on and wanted to be in fashion and I was maybe not so good at school. I c kind of struggled in school. So I had it in my head that I could work in fashion I could work my way up and maybe I wouldn't need to go to university.
What early sustainability initiatives did Ganni implement and how did they evolve over time?
So that's what I tried to do. And so I started working for a brand called Oasis. It's a high street brand in the UK.
