Welcome to the Fear and Greed Business News Afternoon Report for Tuesday the 29th of September 2026. I'm Michael Thompson and every afternoon we have the five stories that happened today that you need to know about. Let's go.
Why did the ASX rise after the RBA lifted interest rates?
Story number one is a big one. The S&P ASX 200 finished 0.3% higher today at 8,709 points despite the Reserve Bank lifting interest rates for the fourth time this year. The RBA board unanimously lifted the cash rate by a quarter of 1% to 4.6%. That is its highest level in 15 years. But the ASX actually climbed during Reserve Bank Governor Michelle Bullock's press conference as investors interpreted some of her comments as suggesting that rates may be close now to their peak. ANZ still expects another rate rise in November, saying the RBA statement was hawkish and even if some of Bullock's answers at the press conference were more dovish. We'll have a much closer look and analysis of this in tomorrow morning's show.
Technology, though, was the standout sector on the bourse today. It was helped by big gains from Kodan and Megaport, which we'll come back to shortly. Energy stocks went the other way, despite Brent crude trading around $106 a barrel. Santos, Woodside, Ampol, Viva Energy all finished lower. And for the financials, Commonwealth Bank was 0.8% lower, but the rest of the big four banks were flat. The Aussie dollar edged above 70 US cents today, while Australian bond yields also rose on the back of the interest rate decision.
Why does Codan expect its profit to more than double?
Story number two, I mentioned that it was a great day for the tech sector, largely because of drone components and metal detector group Kodan. So it said that it is experiencing strong demand for the parts that it supplies to drone manufacturers due to warfare in conflict zones and now expects profits in the December half to be more than double those of a year earlier. In a statement, Kodan said, demand from conflict regions is currently exceptionally strong, reflecting the proven performance and reliability of our technology in these contested environments. The group's Minelab handheld metal detectors business has also made a solid start to the new financial year. And its share price, the company's share price surged almost 24% today.
Though another stock from the same sector, worth a mention, Megaport, its share price jumped nearly 9% after the tech infrastructure company said it had won three new AI contracts worth nearly $1 billion.
Who is running to lead the Australian Greens?
Story number three, one from politics now, and Sarah Hansen-Young has become the first Greens politician to publicly put her hand up to replace Larissa Waters as the federal party leader. Waters stepped down last night because of worsening chronic kidney disease. After just 16 months in the job as the Greens leader, she plans to take time away before returning to the Senate. Hanson Young, who is the party's longest-serving senator, says she is speaking with colleagues and has asked for their support. Deputy Leader Maureen Faruqi is considering her options, while David Shoebridge has declined to rule himself out. The Greens' party room will meet this week to choose its third party leader in less than two years.
Why did Pope Leo criticize Nvidia’s CEO over AI safety?
Story number four, Pope Leo XIV has weighed into the debate about new technology threats, rebuking NVIDIA Chief Executive Jensen Huang for downplaying the risks posed by AI. He said, "...concerned about the threat the technology poses to humanity should be taken seriously. Huang, along with US President Donald Trump, has rejected calls to coordinate and slow model development and introduce more regulation." Pope Leo told reporters that he had read reports about NVIDIA launching new safety tools for model builders, but questioned Huang's commitment to safety in light of his recent comments.
Why were five men arrested near RAF Fairford in the UK?
And finally, story number five, five men arrested near a US-used airbase in England on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offenses have been released on police bail. As counter-terror investigators examined whether a foreign state was involved, the five British men aged between 23 and 25 were arrested near RAF Fairford after three suspicious vans were spotted close to the base early on Sunday morning.
