All right, welcome everyone to episode three of Rimfire Radio. We are joined today by the original swamp man from Florida, Dusky, my favorite tugboat driver, Gatlab, and all of our favorite doctor, Dr. Scary Guy, aka Dr. Jellyfingers. So important thing to note is don't take anything we say too seriously. None of this should be construed as advice.
This is for entertainment purposes only, but we promise it won't be too entertaining. We are still not endorsed by We Like Shooting, the Firearms Radio Network, or Camerato Jesus, but one day we will be. So I guess we'll get started with our rimfire rundown.
And, uh, I think first on the list, we were going to have, uh, we mentioned in the last episode that we were going to each discuss our 10, 22 builds. So Dusky, tell us about, I guess you already have one and you have one you're working on. Talk about either or both your choice.
So I'm working on my second official 10, 22 build. My first one, I probably started 2017, 18, something like that. Um, So I didn't want just, you know, I wanted to build a little bit, something a little custom. I've shot some 22s here and there, or some 10-22s here and there.

Chapter 2: Who are the guests featured in this episode?
I like some of the nicer ones, but you've got to keep budget in mind, of course. And you've got some of the older school ones. You know it's traditional. There's a barrel band on the thing. You've got to love that. But I just wanted something a little bit more versatile, a little bit more customized. So I took a little time thinking about what I wanted to get and put together.
I got some parts together. I went with... I went with Brownells barrel and receiver on that one. I call it the Bren 22. Is that the BRN 22? Do you guys call it that, too?
We don't, but, yeah, I think it's yours.
There you go. That's what it is, though. So it's got the Brownells barrel and receiver. I went with the standard Ruger bolt. I went with the Ruger BX22 barrel. and the Magpul Hunter stock on there. It's got a 16-inch barrel. And for the optic, I chose a Swamp Fox Tomahawk, the original. Just a 1-4, because I don't... I like to keep things kind of smaller, sort of minimal, in a way.
That's why I like the 1-4. I might want to play with some little bit more magnification. Of course, the better you can see the target, the better you can do. And I did
Did get a little bit into long range, if you will, shooting a couple hundred yards or so with the .22, and that got more fun and makes me want to push things out further, something like what they do with NRL matches, which I'd love to get into and start competing with these .22s.
So that was just my ideas, just some general purpose .22, maybe do some competition with, do some hunting with, do some target practice with, just all around general purpose. And I've been shooting that thing for many years, and that's been my primary hunting .22. I've got a lot of squirrels with that, a lot of small game.
It's filled up the freezer a couple times over, more than likely, you could say. And in a way, it is basic. In another way, compared to traditional stuff, it's a little bit more customized. It's kind of a middle-of-the-road build, if you will. I don't have any fancy parts on there, but again, it's not the basic one.
Well, but, I mean, you got a pretty, I mean, so you actually, this is your first 10-22, and you have one you're working on, but so you built both of those from parts. Yes.

Chapter 3: What are the hosts' thoughts on 10/22 builds?
Cool. And you got the, I actually have the BX trigger in mine that I'm going to talk about, and that really, it's a pretty good trigger, I think. You like it? I go back and forth on it. I mean, it's better than stock. It's not... I'm sure there's better. I'm sure there's better. Now, on your optic, though, you said you have a Swamp Fox Tomahawk.
Is that, you said, one to four, or is it a fixed four? It is a one to four, low-hit to LPVO, essentially. Okay, because I've got, I don't know, I thought this was called a Tomahawk. It might not. I've got a four, like a straight four power that I got that's an old Swamp Fox, but it's a red dot. That's the prism, then. Is it?
Chapter 4: How do the hosts customize their rimfire rifles?
I believe so. It could be. It looks kind of like a... It's got an etch reticle. Yeah, let me look. I haven't shot it enough. It's kind of a new one. Yeah, it is an etch reticle. So it's a prism. It just kind of looks like a big red dot. It's a fixed four power.
Yeah, prisms are great. Prisms are great. Pretty good, pretty forgiving prism. Uh, I box there, I relief, uh, but you get more clarity and just about as quick as any red dot you'll get on there. So it's great balance with the etch reticle. You don't have to worry about run out of batteries.
Now they weren't good. I've, I have a pretty serious astigmatism, so they work pretty well for that. So you have a, what's this new one you've been posting pictures of your building?
So that thing's been a project and a half and just running into not major issues, just little things here and there, just a lot of little delays. And that's going to be a shortened version because I help with my 22 all the time.
Um, usually I'm out there with a, with a, with a rifle caliber rifle and you know, there's going to be, there's going to be anytime I go out there looking for squirrel, I bring my 22. There's not going to be a squirrel to see anytime you go out there with the rifle, looking for, looking for some hogs, looking for some deer. What do you see? Watch the fucking squirrels.
So I wanted something that I could, I could bring with me at the same time. that wasn't just a little, just a basic pistol where I could kind of hit something. If it's, you know, 20, 30 yards off, something like that. And so that was my intention with this one is to have something a little bit handier.
So for that, I went with the Midwest industries chassis, which is a little bit of upgrade for me. Um, it's pretty nice so far. My first impressions are a bit of an upgrade.
Yeah, not much.
Yeah. And, uh, I went with a fax and barrel and a fax and, uh,

Chapter 5: What experiences do the hosts share about shooting .22s?
And he goes, oh, man, here's the other thing I was telling you about. And he goes inside and he comes back. And this company, it's a funny name. It makes me laugh every time I see it. Blackhawk with the exclamation point. Yep. They make the old polymer horse that hold through for like the last 30 years or whatever.
Oh, we all know Blackhawk, exclamation point.
Yeah. Okay. That's funny. They partnered evidently or bought up a company called Knox, K-N-O-X-X, and they make a 1022 polymer lightweight drop-in chassis. And it's got a fixed, what would be an M4 or AR-15 style buffer tube, polymer injected all one piece. So you can put any brace or stock you'd like to on it. So we dismantled the original 1022. We installed the tack solution barrel.
We dropped it in the chassis. He put a... Might have been Tac Solutions, again, the extended mag release. It sits right against the trigger well. You just tap it with your trigger finger, and it dumps the mags out. It's pretty badass. I like it. And he also had from Kidd, I think, which is another big player in 10-22 aftermarket second, third-party accessories. Pretty good stuff. High-end stuff.
Chapter 6: What are the challenges of using suppressors on .22s?
They've got a bolt hold, open or bolt catch, that's built on the front of the trigger ring. So you pull the bolt back with your dominant hand and your right hand, and you pull the bolt back with your right hand to show clear, and your left thumb, you just push this lever down, and it holds the bolt back. Is that the one that goes kind of around the pick rail, or it's part of the pick rail? No.
It's its own thing, okay. I'll send you a closer picture of it in a minute. Okay. And so he's like, yeah, you just got to figure out what kind of optic you want on this thing. And about two and a half years ago, I came across this guy's Instagram account. I hope everybody finds this guy and follows him. All one word, all lowercase. Bargain Ben Tactician.
He has put together some of the coolest builds. He's got a studio. His photography is great. His cinematography is good. He's got a YouTube channel and doesn't support as much now. Coolest sense of humor. We chat like direct messages all the time. He's really supportive of what we're doing now. He's like a really cool guy. And the idea of being a bargain bin technician is tactician.
And his channel is always the just of good sort of thing. So he would go out and buy stuff that was on sale, discontinued, one-off, bargain bin, clearance, demos, whatever. And he would put these builds together. And he's been kind of an inspiration of mine. So I try to spend the least amount of money I can on all my builds for like the last year. All of it. ARs, pistols, everything.
Nice.
I went to Amazon. I'm looking for a dot and a pick riser for the receiver. Monstrum Tactical. Maybe notorious or infamous to all of us. I've heard they've really improved a lot. I'm not saying they were bad. I'm just saying I think they've improved their quality. I've seen more of their gear out in the wild on other people's gear lately. They make a pretty decent
L-P-V-L called the Ladon, L-A-D-O-N. And one of our guys in our local matches, that's what he runs on his PCC. And evidently he's loved it for years. So I look on Amazon and usually they've got a really nice clearance section usually on their website. Amazon had the receiver mounted pick rail.
and a red dot, like an old school open emitter, red dot, like the Seymour style, like, but like a new profile, like a better one called Aries.
I do like that vibe.

Chapter 7: What optics do the hosts recommend for rimfire rifles?
I mean, I don't know who's worse, but I challenge you to find one worse. But maybe, you know, give it some time.
I think Dan just maybe made it sound like we're going to be mediocre at being mediocre, too. I like it. Nice.
You know, I'll take that. I'll take that. So then, Dr. Scary Guy, let's hear about your 10-22. Now, you have 47 different Beretta Neos, but how many 10-22s do you have in your arsenal?
I think I only have two. Just two is all I can think of off the top of my head. Terrible. Tell us about them. Well... One of them is stainless and very nice-looking with a laminate stock, and I bought it at a gun auction, and it was a really good experience. Maybe that's for a different time.
But since you guys all talked about how great yours is, I want to talk about the other one I have that is absolutely disgusting. Nice.
Go on. Please be pink.
It's not. It's super black. It's awesome-looking black. If you remember in 2012, 2013 or so, there was a show called Sons of Guns where they did all sorts of, like, bubble gunsmithing, and the dad went to prison for molesting his daughter when she was a kid, and everything fell apart.
Great, great show.
Just a giant disaster all around.

Chapter 8: What parting advice do the hosts give at the end of the episode?
So the butt of the receiver is basically up against your shoulder inside of this clamshell. It's got a long Picatinny carry handle on top where you can mount your optics. You have to use an 18-inch barrel 10-22 or else you accidentally commit an unfortunate event.
So that's just like the Desert Tech. It's the same way. You have to have an 18-inch barrel.
It does. That's the look they were going for, a nice little bullpup design. I don't know how the Atlas ones are now that he's running his own company. It looks like they're $350. But this original one costs about the same thing. I think I waited over a year for it to finally show up because Red Jacket was going through all of that mess. It's hilariously bad.
Um, the charging handle, if you, if you see a picture of it, there's a little knob at the top underneath the carry handle and you just kind of push that back and it actuates the charging handle on the 10 22. It gets stuck sometimes. Um, I probably ought to go in and Dremel it out. Uh, the trigger, because it's a bull pup, you know, they always have that trigger bar that never quite feels right.
And this one, every.
Everything you're doing is a secondary function that's affecting another function, the original procedure.
Yeah, no exception right here. It adds an extra 12 inches to that trigger. Extra step, right? Yeah. My original one, I don't know how they are now. I want to make that clear because I don't want to say bad things about Jomo. This one from Old Red Jacket was not great. They did have a nice little gear inside of it to let you set where it would touch the actual 10-22 trigger.
So that was a really cool feature. But for whatever reason, mine just never worked right. I tried pulling it apart a couple of times. I had to dig around for the yard for lost bolts and screws, you know, because you try to open it in some part somewhere is going to pop off and go flying. And every time I tried to put so much as 25 rounds through it, it just made my finger tired.
And it has been a long time since my finger was that tired, and that's a whole different story.
