In this week’s Flightless Bird, David and Rob visit the last Blockbuster videostore in the world in Bend, Oregon. On the way they stop off at the Overlook Hotel (sort of) and discuss their love of physical media. This week’s feedback is all very emo (in a good way). Chapter 1: What is the Flightless Bird episode about?
Hey, man. Hi, Hayden. How are you doing?
Yeah, I'm okay. Thanks for asking. Thanks for being interested.
What's been the highlight of your day so far?
Well, I've woken up and I've had a coffee. Just recently, I took some medication and did a wee. That was pretty good too.
Chapter 2: What memories and experiences do David and Rob share about video rental stores?
That's good. The topic on today's Flightless Bird is the Blockbuster video store chain. And I'm just wondering if you've ever been to a Blockbuster.
Yeah, they're in New Zealand. They've got yellow writing and blue and a blue sign with yellow writing. And I used to go there and hire some stuff.
Yeah, for sure. What was your favorite thing about perusing the aisles of Blockbuster?
Oh man, there's just too many things. Like it's hard to get into that space now because everything is available to you all the time and also nothing is available to you. But I think it's the freedom, right? Anything. It was a world of possibilities. It wasn't dictated to you necessarily by Netflix or by the various streaming services. You could choose it and you could create bargains.
It was like $3 for $7 rack or whatever. The whole world was there and it was visibly in front of you. And you could pick out the thing that you would enjoy the most. And there was still choice paralysis, but it wasn't as unsatisfying and spiritually destructive as like picking from a streaming service. Oh, and there was porn. There was porn in there.
You go through the curtain and you could like, I always wanted to go through that curtain and see what's in the porn sections.
Where I grew up in New Zealand, we didn't have Blockbuster. We had Video Easy and United Video. And there was a little adults only section. And I never went. I don't think I ever went in. Even when I was old enough to go in, I didn't go in. Did you ever go in?
I'm pretty sure I went in once in Sunny Nook, but I'm not sure it was a Blockbuster section. It was definitely, it could have been a video easy.
Actually, do you remember that what was the first time you saw pornography? Do you have like a memory of that? You know what? I don't. I really don't. Too long ago.

Chapter 3: Why is the last Blockbuster store in Bend, Oregon special?
I miss our emo theme song.
I know, it's only been a week.
It's only been a week. I know. We got so much feedback from that emo episode, which we'll get to soon. It was really good, Rob. You really nailed that thing. Blockbuster.
blockbuster had to happen i'm wearing my blockbuster tracksuit pants that i got from the blockbuster store i was i've got a full um outfit but i realized i wore that i was so excited i wore that during the emo episode and i didn't want to repeat oh you did so i've just got the pants on different top you know you had never been to a blockbuster this was my first time ever
first blockbuster ever was the last blockbuster ever yeah which is pretty i mean it felt special to go and it's like they had them in new zealand but not in the town where i was and so i missed out and i i knew about them but the idea of going to one i was deeply curious about it and we haven't been meaning to go for a while but then we end up in portland so like why not go
What did you think it was going to look like? Or what was your reference for what it was going to look like?
My reference was that store I mentioned to Hayden in the intro. It would have been Video Easy, which is the store that I applied to work in when I was at school. I was like a nerd. I loved watching movies. I loved renting movies. And so I kind of assumed Blockbuster would be similar to that. And was it? It was pretty similar. But Blockbuster felt somehow more magnificent. It felt more American.
There was that bubble gum that you pointed out to me.
Yeah, they had Big League Chew there.

Chapter 4: What was the atmosphere and look of the last Blockbuster store?
But I think that is so reminiscent of wandering a blockbuster and being like, all right, what are we going to watch tonight?
Yeah, totally. Totally. Yeah, that thing of an unknowable destination. And it's like an effort to get there.
But I do think how infinite it feels is a thing. For a long time, even with my music, I was a holdout on having an iPod Classic. Because I was like, I want my catalog of music because I want to be able to scroll through my music.
And you're talking like a wallet of CDs kind of thing? No, I'm talking about an iPod. You know what an iPod is, right? Yeah, I know an iPod. But so you stopped what? You stopped yourself getting a what? From going to like a streamer, going to Spotify.
Oh, I see. You wanted your things organized in like folders.
I just wanted like, here's my catalog of music. I understand. Versus like, here's this infinite abyss.
Sorry, I was identical. And I used to take ordering my music very seriously when I had a PC on my hard drive. Having everything there, knowing exactly where it was, that was very special to me.
And when I started driving, I remember having a car with a cassette player. Amazing. It was important only because I had the cassette tape adapter that would plug in.
that's right to my ipod and before like line in was a thing like you couldn't do that the cd we're dating ourselves there are kids listening to this going like what are you talking about yeah that was wild having a cassette tape that then had the adapter i remember that but that was very important when i when i was a kid and i was like i i just want a car that will have a cassette i don't want a cd player that's so funny you can't play my ipod classic

Chapter 5: How did Blockbuster compare to other video rental stores and their unique features?
Anyway, so there's a headline. It's archived on archive.org. It's from the 31st of January, 2020. The final credits are about to roll on New Zealand's last blockbuster video store. And there won't be any need to rewind the tape. So according to this story, there was a blockbuster remaining in Dargaville, New Zealand, after the Australian store shut down.
Do you think people just got Australia and New Zealand confused?
I thought that initially. But because this store is closing after the Australian store, I think they are separate. And I think like in many cases, New Zealand just gets left behind. Yeah, they just didn't count. Well, it doesn't count. New Zealand has left off a lot of world maps. We're not on them. We just get forgotten because we're small and we're at the bottom of the world.
So there was that story. And then there was another news story. They initially seem to back that up. The headline from January 2020, final credits, Dargaville's, Dargaville is a city in New Zealand, Dargaville's blockbuster DVD video rental store is closing.
Similar kind of narration, a relic from days gone by when the store closes at the end of the month, there will be only one blockbuster video store left in the town of Bend, Oregon.
Well, so they were second to last. No, that's what I'm saying. Not even like before. Okay. No, yeah.
So no. So according to this, it was Alaska and then Australia. New Zealand still remained. But it does get a bit confusing because I dug deeper and it gets confusing because suddenly it's called Dargaville's Blue to Video Store. Okay. Instead of Blockbuster. And then I looked at some photos of the store in Dagobah.
And whilst the Blockbuster sign is right at the top, under is this other name, Blue to Video. And so I think what happened is that they lost the franchise. Blue to Video took over. But they kept the Blockbuster sign. All these news articles who were writing about the store closing down saw Blockbuster. got confused, and called it Blockbuster when it was no longer a Blockbuster.
Well, they could have still been a Blockbuster. The movie theater I worked at was Century Theaters, but Cinemark bought it. Yeah. But it still had Century Theaters up for a while. I don't know if they ever changed it.
