What motivates Bobby Glen James and what’s his core “DO” mantra for founders?
Hello Bobby. How are you doing today? I'm doing well. Thanks for asking. Great stuff. Thank you for your time. I really appreciate it. I'm I was looking forward for this conversation for a while, you know, as we always have our introduction call before having the proper recording. So I was waiting, you know, day is coming. There you go. We're here. So Bobby, before we start then Do you have a favorite quote, something that motivates you, inspires you, you would like to share with our audience?
I do. And it's it's it's it's kind of not much of a quote, but it's it's kind of what I live by. І I think it is the answer and the secret to everything. And it is one word, two letters. One word two letters, okay. Yeah, it's D O do Do it. If you wanna be successful, uh you keep doing stuff. You you don't give up. As a founder, you know really quickly, you you you can pivot all day long, but don't quit.
Don't quit. Yeah. Yeah, make perfect sense. Makes perfect sense. Great stuff. So Bobby, um Let's imagine that we are in a room of uh full of ambitious founders, you know, new early stage builders, right? They're sitting there, they're waiting for you, um, they don't know who's gonna come up on the stage. And within a moment you walk in, the whole spotlight is on you, you got the mic, and you have few minutes. What would you tell them about you or your story so that they can stick with us for the rest of the hour?
All right. Let's let's see. So I first uh would would would preface with I've got a l I've I've been around a lot of founders and and a lot of startups and a lot of people that are excited about this product or service that they have and they're so passionate about it and they come up and they're like, Bobby. Everybody needs this. Everybody needs this. This is the coolest thing. Everybody needs this. And my question is always, always, that's great if they need it, but do they want it? It doesn't matter. It it doesn't matter if they need it. I know that sounds crazy. There's plenty of people that need stuff that don't want it and don't do it and don't take it to the next level. So if you're looking for an MVP and and you're trying to figure out how to make it for everybody, that everybody needs this, they need it, you need to go find out if they want it before they do anything.
And I I I I tell a story. I had a a client that uh uh it's a fun I'm gonna I'm gonna take a minute to tell the story because I I find it it's a it's a good one, it's a fascinating one, and I think it's a great growth and a founder story. So what I would I would tell, I'd get up and I'd talk about. So here's this kid, and he's a construction worker, he's got a little business, he he does uh concrete work, right? And he lives in Utah in the United States. States and uh it gets cold in Utah, you know, and and there's a lot of times in the year that he can't pour concrete, right? Because it won't cure whatever. And he gets this idea, he's talking to his his uh uncle, who's an engineer, and he goes, You know, if there was some way, I know there are people that do something to uh
That they can cure concrete in the winter. And his his uncle goes, Yeah, I bet I could create something, I could figure something out. And and it's this. You know, the greatest way to to build a company is you find the problem and then you figure out the solution, right? I mean, yeah, that's the core of of business. That's the core of creating companies. So what he did is his his uncle helped him and they created this powered blanket that they could put over the concrete and it would heat the concrete during whatever weather and it would cure the And he's like, he did it in his little construction company and and he's like, Wow, this is working great. Um and he said, I you know, I should start a business making these.
And doesn't know anything about business. He was not a a business tycoon at all. He knew nothing, but he knew that if he could get some people that did, he might could build something. So that's exactly what he did. Long story short, a year into the growth of that company, they're doing around a million in revenue.
