stocks are falling this morning on wall street the dow down 349 points the nasdaq's dropping 290 the s&p 500 losing 67 points we got an unemployment update this morning first
time claims rising to their highest level in two months. 231,000 people filing for unemployment last week. That's a jump of 22,000 from the previous week. It's also the highest level since December 6th. Analysts were expecting 211,000 new claims. The four-week average rose by 6,000 to more than 212,000 and continuing claims also rose but not as much as expected. Frank Lanza. Fox News.
We won't get the monthly jobs report tomorrow. That release was delayed by the four-day-long partial government shutdown earlier this week. Now those hiring numbers and January's unemployment rate will come out next Wednesday. More than a year after the wildfire disaster in the Los Angeles area that burned down thousands of homes, killing 31 people, there's renewed controversy over the response.
Reporting from the L.A. Times says Mayor Karen Bass watered down the Palisades Fire After Action Report, citing sources that say she wanted sections removed to reduce the chance of legal risk to the city. L.A. Fire Chief Jaime Moore, who took over the department in November, said last month that the report was edited to reduce criticism of the LAFD's leadership.
It is now clear that multiple drafts were edited to soften language and reduce explicit criticism of department leadership in that final report.
Bass's office has rejected the claims, saying in a statement, quote, Mayor Bass reviewed an early draft of the report and only asked the LAFD to check the accuracy on issues like weather and budget, saying she and her staff made no changes. Tanya J. Powers, Fox News.
