A former Florida congressman will remain detained after a jury found him guilty of lobbying for Venezuela's government while Nicolas Maduro was in power.
Former Miami Congressman David Rivera was ordered to remain in custody pending sentencing. Judge Melissa Damien said things have changed now that a jury found him guilty and his remaining assets with a potentially lengthy prison sentence ahead of him make him a flight risk. His attorneys argued his ties to the community mean he would not leave the country. A federal jury convicted Rivera and his business associate, Esther Neuffer, of laundering millions of dollars they got from the Venezuelan government to lobby for Maduro's government, and that they failed to register as foreign agents when doing so. Prosecutors say Rivera used the money for his congressional campaign. At sentencing next month, the DOJ says he could face a sentence of up to 60 years.

legislature's 115 page report says if camp mystic had had the proper evacuation plans and state law required counselor training there would have been time to get campers to safety when a flash flood hit in the middle of the night last july 28 people including 25 girls two 18 year old counselors and the camp's owner dick eastland were all swept to their deaths the report found that at the time of the flooding there were at least 39 adults at the camp who could have been tasked to help with evacuations had they been trained
