Chapter 1: What details are known about the shooting at the Mormon church?
The shooter was a Marine veteran. I'm Carmen Roberts, Fox News. That's what police sources say about the gunman who rammed his pickup truck through the door of a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, Michigan this morning and opened fire on hundreds of people attending service. Police Chief William Rennie. We have two victims who are now deceased. One additional one had died at a local hospital.
And again, that suspect is deceased as well. Seven other victims at this time are in stable condition. One is in critical condition. Police identified the shooter as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford from nearby Burton and say that he also set fire to the church, possibly killing others. The fire is out and crews are searching the area.
The man charged with the murder of conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk is slated for a second court appearance next week. It took two weeks to find someone qualified to represent Tyler Robinson, but now the accused assassin finally has a defense lawyer whose main job will be to try to save his life.
Utah County commissioners have tapped Catherine Nestor, a seasoned trial attorney and a former federal public defender. She'll be going up against Chief Prosecutor Chad Grunander. Tomorrow, the judge is expected to schedule future court dates and possibly a preliminary hearing.
Because Robinson says he can't afford his own lawyer, Utah taxpayers will foot the bill for both of these legal teams, which in a case like this could run well over a million dollars.
