Welcome to Giants Nation player profiles and projections. I'm your host, Bobby Skinner, here with my co-host, the football group. And today we are starting off with Calvin Austin, the 5'9, 162-pound, 27-year-old wide receiver. He signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with up to $4.5 million incentives after four years of being on the Steelers after being the fourth round pick. Austin was a senior bull short king that stood out to us four years ago, and now he's the Giants number one slot wide receiver, Grunt.
Calvin Austin and I go way back to the senior bowl. I uh I remember like fawning over him there. Not quite the same way as I did over Tank Dell, but I remember just saying routes by Calvin Austin at the senior bowl. There are just some guys that eat up down there. And I think like a shifty slot receiver is that's like a showcase for them is going to Mobile. But but I mean, that's one of the reasons to get really excited about him, right? Even that five foot seven, hundred and seventy pounds, he runs very fast, long speed and quick speed. So he's able to separate in small spaces and over the course of the field going vertical. Um, and and he just absolutely lit mobile. Up despite being five seven, having obvious limitations with size.

And uh he has the double like, hey, what's the best ways to get on the Bobby radar? A senior bowl like that. He also had a great game against the Giants, right? You know, he had uh two touchdown game against the Giants on Monday Night Football on some deep passes.

He had his only punt return touchdown was in that game as well, too. Uh so he's done that. But like you mentioned, he is fast, right? Like he is kind of like this hyper quick release. Good you know, like pretty good at keeping himself clean, can run quick routes, right? He's not the most savvy or has like the most crazy, like a change of direction burst, but like He's just quick and can uh and can get into these routes. Um you know, last year thirty one catches, three hundred seventy yards, three touchdowns. The year before, thirty six catches, five hundred and forty eight yards, four touchdowns. You can tell same you know about the same catches, one from Aaron Rodgers and then one from Russell Wilson throwing the ball deep.
And then he's also got you know six hundred forty punt return yards and a touchdown doing that. So like he's a slot guy, number one by his size, but even by his playstyle. But he's also like not totally stuck in the slot, right? Like he's played a good amount of outside in his career. I mean, last year it was fifty fifty. The year before it was fifty seven percent slot. Uh and then even uh his second year, which he missed his first year with injury, was only was fifty seven percent outside. Uh so like he can't because he has that ability to get down the field. He's not gonna be targeted a ton because he's five foot nine uh a hundred sixty two pounds. But like he does have that ability to, you know, take
a a deep pass as well too.
Right. Yeah. And I think that adds to his flexibility, allows you to use him in different ways. So he has the ability to stretch the field really well. He's not so great in press release. If he gets hands on him, he's light. He's sure he has the shorter length to get hands off him as well. But he is very good at getting out of the release without keep getting hands on him. Like you said, keeping himself clean. And He is very good along the route. He's not like this crazy Keenan Allen route runner, but he's good enough where he can shake guys up. I mean, look, John Harbaugh literally lost to him specifically last year. He made that defender fall on his face. I understand it was late in the year and it's at Heinz Field and that you know grass was all torn up.
But you you make a guy an outside corner. He was on the outside when that happened. So um He has that ability to play on the outside, but that allows you to play with him in the slot too. He does a lot of cool stuff where he'll just do like a post-wheel. So he can get upfield, get matched up with a linebacker who just absolutely cannot run with him.
