Why did the Giants hire Greg Roman as a senior offensive assistant?
Yeah. I'll never let you down, even if I could I'd give up everything, if only for your good So hold me when I'm here, grab me when I'm wrong You can hold me when I'm scared, you won't always be there So love me when I'm gone
Welcome to Giants Nation. I'm your host, Bobby Skinner, here with my co-host, the football grump. We got a special episode today because the Giants made some key hires. They got an offensive line coach in Mike Blumgren, which we're going to talk about. But firstly, we're going to be talking about Greg Roman, senior offensive assistant, grump. Yeah, we're going to get into this. I was genuinely excited about this. Once the Giants had gotten an offensive coordinator, hell, before they got an offensive coordinator, we kind of knew Greg Roman would not be that. I was a big time fan of getting this guy in the run game coordinator or whatever role. And now the Giants get a guy who just puts together great rushing offenses time after time.
And he's just an assistant coach on the offense. I'm excited about it. How are you?
Time after time. I feel great, dude. So I think I woke up to this news. I went to bed early that night. Not, you know, still trying to recover. You sound great, by the way. It sounds like you're feeling better. And I woke up and I saw this. What a great start to your day is to like look at your phone and see good news. I know. Fans of teams that Greg Roman has OCD for all over want to poo poo this move. But I think in the specific role that he has, this is I mean, this is absolutely crucial. This is culture building. This is a start getting the ball rolling. And I'm excited to talk about it. The Super Bowl just happened. I'm excited for 2026 regular season already.
It is culture building. Like that's a good, like, you know, culture gets over, uh, overused or whatever was, you know, winning culture, you know, culture winning is culture, but there's ways like it's, you don't just have a good run game. Cause Hey, you know what? We've got a couple of good alignment, a good running back, uh, and a quarterback can rush. No, like you, you build it out, you build out a vision. Uh, and it may not be great year one, but you see the steps that are there and then you add more people and then it becomes a great run game. So Greg Roman, uh, is just that name makes a lot of people being like, oh, that's a bad coach because he's been an offensive coordinator for four different teams now in the NFL, the 49ers and Chargers with Jim Harbaugh, the Ravens with John Harbaugh, and then the Bills with Rex Ryan.
And he's not the best offensive coordinator. In fact, he may even have a lifespan as an offensive coordinator, even if he's a good hire, which I don't think he was a bad hire for the Chargers. And I think he was definitely a good hire for John Harbaugh with the Ravens in the day. And he was a great hire with Jim Harbaugh at the 49ers and a great hire with Rex Ryan and the Bills. But he does have a lifespan, right? His passing games are not great. And we said it before. We were in Alabama, Grump. We were actually on Breaking Big Blue with Jordan Renan. And he asked us, what do you guys think about Greg Roman in a run game role? And we're like, we'd be thrilled, thrilled. for real, like this is a guy who has put together great rushing attacks year after year.
And it's not just because, you know, they have a great running back or great Olin because he builds it. He builds it from the inside out. He, he teaches it and it's put together a great results year after year. Really the only time it hasn't put together great rushing results is the last couple of years with the chargers where it's kind of middle of the pack. Um, But that became with the most pass happy he ever got with Justin Herbert as his quarterback and some crazy offensive line and running back injuries. And still they were ranked 12th and 17th and rushing in those two seasons. So we'll break it all down. But I am so excited to get him here and working on this run game because that is something the Jets need.
