McCarthy has been traded for. by the New York Giants for a fifth-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings, obviously with an intention to play this year eventually, as long as, you know, Jameis Winston honestly looks like what he's looked like the first couple games.

today, regardless of this. So I woke up kind of not feeling the best anyway. But, you know, we knew a move had to be coming. I'm also I'm a little bit downtrodden from the Brian Burns news as well. But. This is the move. We kind of previewed this a little bit before the game with the news that was coming out just before the game. And we talked about this. I think it was at the mailbag episode. We both agreed that this was kind of not the direction that we would have went in. for this um but you know i i guess no i i think i'm viewing this from a different lens i think that they are viewing this from a different lens than maybe we were uh
obviously they're they're looking out of a lens of like hopefully we can get this guy to be good i'm looking at it from a lens of like i don't think he's going to be it's like that that's kind of the way i'm like this is for this year right obviously if he's good he's here for next year as a backup But this is for this year. If Jackson Dart's not injured, they're obviously not trading for J.J. McCarthy. So this is for this season. But here's why I'm low on it. Number one, the actual draft stuff doesn't go into it. It's just the issue is I feel like he's almost been worse than what I expected. Actually, he has been worse than what I expected. I joked. I was like, what was my worst draft take of that class?
It was being too high on J.J. McCarthy. Intense starts. He is 6-4, so he has won some games. He's completed 57% of his passes, 163 yards per game, 11 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, while also adding 180 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Out of 33 quarterbacks, the completion rate would be last, the touchdown rate 21st, interception rate last, success rate second to last, quarterback rating last, QBR third last, sack rate last, and then yards per game. as a starter last as well too. And this is all like, here's my thing is this is all in a good quarterback environment. You know, the team that drafted him again, made him the third stringer after a bad preseason this year. Like you could tell me how fifth round picks don't usually hit.
We're going to hit all that, but neither do quarter pro you know, quarterback profiles with this. And the other thing is like, it's not a huge swing on talent either. Right? Like that was kind of the thing with JJ McCarthy. It wasn't like, Oh, you're taking this big swing on this crazy raw talent. He was supposed to be the guy that's like, oh, he runs the pro offense type of thing, and he wins games. And he's just been – he technically has won games, I guess, in the NFL level, but he's just been a really bad quarterback. And I'm just not betting on him coming in here midseason, learning the playbook, and figuring it out. I'm just – I do not believe that will happen.
Well, there's a lot to unpack there. But the J.J. McCarthy versus from what he was coming out of college versus what he ultimately became or has been so far, I think, is the proper way to look at this. The I think the run game element of what he did in college has surfaced in Minnesota.
