Why has the Giants offense looked sloppy through early training camp?

Unknown 0:00
Is it raining where you are? The only thing I could think to ask. But nothing ever hurts so bad as the no that you sent back. But ain't that the truth, man? Those are just facts. The farther you go from where you start, the harder it is to get back. Love of my life, gone forever. Love of my life, gone for good. This is from my friends in West Virginia.

Welcome to Giants Nation. I'm your host, Bobby Skinner. Today we have Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post on the show to talk about everything he's seen from camp and expectations going into the season. Been to some practices since the last time you guys heard me. Football grump, got married. Very big congratulations to him. I know I talked about it on the live stream, but... uh you know we did the drive up and the drive back on the same day and don't regret it at all i was actually like looking not looking forward to it going into it and then once we were there like man i'm so glad we came so glad we got to be a part of his special day uh and it was a lot of fun and i'm very happy for him and i'm excited for you guys to hear from him uh when uh you know when some of this stuff settles down so uh

This episode is mostly going to be the Ryan Denley. I want to talk about on the point of the sloppy offense because the offense has not been good through training camp so far. And there's always going to be like, ah, do we react? Is it practice? Are you overreacting? I do think eventually, if it continues, there becomes a time where this is an issue. But I don't think that's five practices through and then learning a whole new offense. I'm sure they would like to be a little further along than where they are right now with a year two quarterback. But it's not just quarterback, right? They are truly learning a whole new offense. They have a defense throwing some good stuff at them with Denard Wilson. But there will become a point where if it looks bad, it becomes a huge thing because – not a huge thing, but it's a worry because going into the season, we're going to need this offense to score points for the Giants to be able to be competitive.

And they have to start strong, right? So even a slow start really hampers the Giants in finding success in this season. I think Dart individually, we're really going to look at his second half of the season in a new offense. But there may be a lot of growing pains in this with – You're pairing Matt Nagy and Greg Roman and Brian Callahan all together. They're going to have to find their sweet spots with that. But also, I know we're in love with the under center and the under center to play action, and that should be a big part of their offense. It is generally the worst part of Dart's game as a rookie, so he's going to have to grow. You shouldn't just eliminate that from the playbook, but he is going to have to grow.

So it'll be interesting to see. John Harbaugh has said, like, hey, we are throwing everything out there, all the worlds we can live in, and then maybe we take some pages out of the playbook or these are the ones we emphasize a little more. So it's a growth period. They're competing a ton in these practices. They're not wasting time. They're going through situational stuff. But it is something that because it started slow, the question is, do they stay that way? Do they stay that way?

What are John Harbaugh’s practice methods and early takeaways from camp?

Bobby Skinner 3:15
Or do they find their footing? And I'm not saying perfect offenses in practice because then the defense is a worry. But where they look like they're, you know, they're churning along and they know what they're doing. Because the practice I've seen, it just feels like a very disjointed operation on offense. But... We're going to get into the interview with Ryan Dunleavy. First, this episode is brought to you by some special people. We've got Jacob Cogut, or Cogut, or Cougut, Cogut, Cougut, Cogut. Brendan O'Hara, who's actually the son of Sean O'Hara. Maybe we'll get your dad on the show, Brendan. I might even look that up. Is that actually Sean O'Hara's son? Let me do it right now. Sean O'Hara kids. Let's see.
