Welcome to Glamorous Trash. This is a podcast that book clubs viral articles, celebrity memoirs, and trashy discourse to elevate your life. I'm your host, Chelsea DeVantes. I am a TV writer, comedian, filmmaker, author, and sometimes I'm in stuff too. And today we are book clubbing my life in France. the autobiography of renowned chef, author, and television icon, Julia Child, published in 2006. Now you know Julia Child because she's Julia Child. She made the cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. She is behind that. We'll hear all about it. And also she had a bunch of cooking shows on public television, including The French Chef, or perhaps you know her as the Julia part of the film, Julie and Julia, where she was played by Meryl Streep.
So we will get into that film a bit later. Now, this book was actually published after Julia died in 2004, and it was co-authored by Alex Prudhomme, who was actually her husband, Paul's grandnephew. And we have so much to unpack, so let's dive in. My guest today is Tess Barker. Tess is a podcaster, comic, and journalist who has written for outlets like The Guardian and Vice. She also hosts the podcast Lady to Lady. She co-wrote and co-hosted the limited series Toxic, The Britney Spears Story, which won a Webby Award for Best Documentary on the Podcast. I had her on to do the Jamie Lynn Spears... memoir in quotes. We'll call that a book for now. And Tess hosts Pop Mystery Pod, which is so good. I was a guest on it.
Tess, you just had your two-year anniversary of that podcast. And will you please tell everyone the episode you just put out because it sounds unbelievable.
Yeah, I just released a documentary episode about this sort of clandestine process that some television shows use in which they take incarcerated people and use them as studio audience members or for shows that don't have a huge demand for audience.
There's this small part of me that's like hopeful that that's actually a good day in the inmate's life and not terrible, but I guess we'll need to tune in to find out.
Yeah, yeah.
I would say, yeah, tune in, but a little bit of both probably.
Yeah.
Well, you know, really depending on the show, they're forcing them to watch and laugh at. Thank you so much for coming back. It has been too long or just long enough since we were discussing Jamie Lynn Spears' memoir. What do you think?
Um, I think just long enough, you know, because I now have like a nostalgic feeling about discussing it. Whereas before, I remember immediately after recording with you, I quite literally threw that book in the trash. Not a little library, not the library, the trash. The trash. Correct.
That is correct. Okay. So we were talking about how you had to come back on the podcast and you actually were like, Julia child, we got to do Julia child because listen, as our audience knows Paris chef cooking and me, we actually don't mix. So Julia child was not on my list, but you were like, we got to do this. Tell me your enthusiasm for Julia child in this memoir.
How did Julia Child's cooking journey begin?
Yeah.
Yeah, you know, I mean, it's kind of ironic that I'm so obsessed with Julia and this book because I'm actually a vegetarian. And so much of this book is like really sumptuous descriptions of making and eating meat. But I'm also a Taurus rising and I love experiences. I love food. I love traveling. I love writers that describe food writing really well. And so I think that's part of what enchants me so much about this book. But also, I truly feel like this book is sort of a guidebook on how to live well, how to be married well, how to follow your craft well. So I just think it's a really beautiful and important book.
